People spew opinions on the Ford Lightning based on emotions, not facts. Then again, there are plenty of people who ignore the facts and choose to focus on the potential the F-150 Lightning has rather than the reality of its shortcomings. I'm trying to cut through all of the BS and deliver a straight up honest take on the Lightning. Is it for everyone? No. Can it do all the things the Rivian R1T can do? No. Do cold weather and towing affect range? Yes. Is this still the EV I would personally buy over the Mustang Mach-E and Hyundai Ioniq5, both of which I very much like? Yes, yes it is. WHY? Well, you'll have to watch the whole video to find out, but you can compare them all below. Thanks for watching!

Your approach is very much appreciated. I have a reservation and plenty of the posts have had me waffling on completing an order. With the honesty you demanded of this video I realized, I'm not towing a boat between lakes anytime soon. I'll be using this for Costco and Home Depot runs, going to the local mountains for snowboarding, and probably just going to visit friends. I think tailgating with this thing will be awesome at the Rose Bowl. So yeah, the honesty helped put things back into perspective of reality. Thanks for that.

Thanks! I really do like the Lightning a lot. I know there have been some complaints, and it's certainly not perfect, but the overall execution of a full sized truck with an EV powertrain is really satisfying to live with on a daily basis. If Ford can advance the gen2 Lightning and address some of the criticisms, I think it's well on its way to being an ICE truck alternative.

I have had my Lariat SR for 3 months, and I agree with everything you are saying. It is the best vehicle I have ever driven or owned, and I understand that many Lightning owners don't fit in the typical demographic of F150 buyers. I charge it at home mostly and put solar on the house especially because I knew I was buying this truck. I am delighted with the ride, the frunk and it's made my transportation a pleasure. My solar system isn't quite large enough to charge my truck at the present time but I do plan on installing another inverter that should allow me to at least use my 240 volt 30 amp mobile charger on it and still power my home. With my 13 kwh of solar the lightning mobile will only use 7200 watts of that. I could just trickle charge it off my system now using the 120 volt dongle that comes with the mobile charger which only draws 2400 watts. Keeping in mind that's only about 2 kw per hour charge. But if your like me , when the sun is shining I get close to 7 hours of sun power a day. That's 14 kwh free electricity for my truck a day, which equates to about 35 miles of free driving a day. Now granted in the summer I only pay $.12/kwh so it really doesn't matter, that's about $.05/mile or $5 to drive 100 miles. I was lucky to get 15 mpg with my 2014 F150. Usually closer to 10 mpg. You do the math with the current price of gas. Even if gas only cost $1.25/gal I'd still be getting the equivalentcy of 25 mpg with my lightning. I doubt if we will ever see those prices for gas again.

I’ve watched every Lightning video out there. Except maybe that idiot Hoovies. I hit the like button as soon as you made the comments about towing. I go to Home Depot for weekend projects, occasionally to the town dump, and haul the usual host of soccer, basketball, baseball equipment/folding chairs etc. Even when I had a boat, I towed it home and to the marina once. Then the marina put it in the water and stored it. Towed it home and sold it. After that I’ll never have another boat or RV (I want one but my wife is a NO-WAY after the boat). Thanks for a real world review.

Probably the best video I’ve seen on this truck. I have reservations for the Lightning, Silverado EV and Denali EV. I own a 2023 F150 Lightning Lariat, extended range, and I love it. I have never been in a better vehicle, let alone owned or driven better. Sure, there are things to nitpick, but that's true of everything in the universe. The real question is, how does it stack up in many different ways that matter most to most people? Naysayers want to point to how the range is lower when towing, but then they should try showing an ICE truck that doesn't have lower miles per gallon when towing -- I'll wait, lol. Rivian's R1T offers some really cool things, but it's really more of a competitor in the Ranger class, not the F150 class. R1Ts are nice trucks, but they're even more expensive than comparable F150 Lightnings, and they have the flaw of the bowl frunk. The Lightning has that better capacity and easier to load frunk, instead of having to lift up and over to get something into the Rivian's frunk. I think Ford is doing for EVs what Tesla did over the past 15 years, specifically in terms of getting truck buyers into EVs.

Did you reset the EV drive history? If not the guessometer won't be accurate. If people were driving like it's a rollercoaster and testing the 0-60, the truck's computer will estimate the range with that driving history in mind. They updated the camera button to the main menu (finally!)

You said you charged at a “supercharger”. I wish! I love my truck, for the smoothness and Blue Cruise. I don’t have to haul much in the winter, but have to get to work at various hospitals no matter the weather. Almost got stranded the first road trip I made in cold weather, due to the one fast charger on the route was down. Now I make darn sure I’m 100% charged before driving across Wisconsin, and I plug into an outdoor light pole 120v plug at the hotel while I sleep. Since then, no worries, haven’t had to use that spotty fast charger for 200 mile round trip. But jealous of Teslas and their superchargers! And best truck I’ve ever had on winter roads.

@jax1079
@jax1079 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s a lot. It’s a bummer that supply chain issues seem to have driven the price up more than expected and greedy dealerships have exacerbated the problem (very publicly, too). However, when you look at full sized pickups, the percentage increase isn’t actually that bad. A number of trucks reach into the $80k range, and base level trucks are extraordinarily expensive compared to what they were just a few years ago. My hope is that the proliferation of charging infrastructure goes hand in hand with the democratizing of EV powertrains and in ten years we’re looking at faster charging more affordable options - powered by more efficient and lighter batteries. If history is any indication, that should be feasible.

Dang, I would love to have one of these. That price tag is just too high though. Hoping it will come down as EV adoption grows. Things like this start to make city trucks like the Honda Ridgeline seen sort of superfluous. This seems to achieve all of the same things while retaining more truck. Not really a fair comparison, but as someone who formerly considered something like a Ridgeline this really seems to check all the boxes and more. Just too expensive at the moment. Still super weird to me to see trucks getting spec’d up into 90K and above. In my mind that’s like super luxury territory.
@jax1079
@jax1079 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, but like so much these days, if people continue to pay (and finance them for 96 months or something) then they’ll keep finding ways to justify the stratospheric prices. I’m hoping we see an EV Maverick type pickup in the not too distant future. That could be extremely interesting. 😉
@pstoneking3418

Everything has skyrocketed in price. Just look at a higher trim ICE F150. If you plan on using this locally, you'll get over 4 times the range of any new ICE F150. Add that to the low maintenance costs of the lightning and it won't take long to pay for the difference in the price. Not to mention you'll be driving the best F150 ford has ever made.
@dillonrobinson5858

The guess-o-meter is garbage. To know your real range takes a bit of math. The long range battery has 131 kWh of battery. If you switch to calm mode, you can see your % remaining on the battery. Secondly, use your current trip info to see your average miles/kWh. Say you have 80% left and you’re averaging 2.2 miles/kWh. You’ll get (131x80%) x 2.2 = 230 moles left: To get the rated range, you’ll need to average 2.4 miles / kWh.

Not true. The only remove that feature for trucks was built in 2022. My pro is the schedule for production in February and it does not have these features removed as I selected them and was fine with waiting when i ordered in aug 22. The only thing that was removed from my build was an advanced security pack. Might want to contact your dealer if your vehicle is not built to add the feature back if you want it.
