Great video, I've been eyeballing this rig. I think I'm going to pick one up. It looks very versatile and very gas efficient. Thanks George.

Does it matter if Hot rolleed steel vs cold rolled? doesnt hot rolled have mill scale?

How did you decide to fusion weld the cube instead of adding filler rod? Is there a rule of thumb for when to use rod or fusion weld? Thanks!
@8974739 жыл бұрын
Jay, in theory, adding gas filler rod is stronger than fusion welding. The cube did not require any strength. In other words, there would be no stress on the welds. This fusion weld required very little grinding / sanding to get a smooth finish. Also, I particularly like to fusion weld.

That looks like a really precise torch and easy to handle. Does it do well with lap and t joints? To me laps and t joints are a bit tricky to weld with a standard torch. That torch there looks like it would be easy to pin point the heat and I know the henrob cobra uses less psi of gas to run it. I have the issue where my puddle favors too much of the bottom plate on a t joint and it doesn't want to form right. I I'm thinking my torch is just worn out because whatever I do, that puddle acts very stubborn. I might need to invest in a cobra. It tends to blow around and I keep trying to add wire just to get the top and bottom to come together. Settings are 5 psi on Acetylene and 10 psi on oxygen. 1/8 inch plate with a number 2 tip with the Harbor freight heavy duty torch which they don't even make anymore its all olsens. Plus it seems like with the henrob it's so much easier to handle with the pistol grip vs the old style blow torch design. I have to keep trying to adjust my wrist around and all that jazz.

Very nice, you make it look easy!

Thanks for the comment. I've been doing it for awhile, so practice does make it easier. Although, there are times when it doesn't go perfectly for me.

Great video! Have you used this rig with DHCs low pressure regulators?
@8974736 жыл бұрын
I don't know about "low pressure regulators". What I'm using is the Cobra regulators that came with the torch. I believe my set is 2 Stage.

I live in a town where acitylene is not always available. can the henrob be used with propane? I'm new to welding. I don't know if this is a stupid question. thank you.

Tarek, I don"t know. But here is web site that will have your answer. Detroit Torch. detroittorch.com/products/dhc2000-propane-tip-set

Yes it can. You need to buy a set of tips to suit propane gas though. Here is an Aus site that has them, surely they can be bought in UK and USA. shop.cobratorches.com.au/index.php?route=product/category&path=43_71

Oxy propane tips are visibly different from oxy acetylene tips: The oxy acetylene burner is just a little hole, the oxy propane burner has some kind of outer burner around the central opening. The flame velocity of propane is much lower, and when you turn up the power the flame tends to "blow off", to separate from the end of the burner. The smaller flames around the base of the main flame "anchor" the flame in appearance, they are continually re-lighting it. Thus you can turn it up higher. If you just put propane through something designed for acetylene it will burn, but will not be very powerful

So George, what makes the difference using the henrob style gun,vs using a small tip on a regular style torch? Trying to understand the difference other than the pinpoint tips. Could not a standard style torch with a more fine tip do the same thing?
@8974736 жыл бұрын
Peter, I don't know if there is a finer point torch tip for the traditional torch. There may be, but i haven't seen one. The smallest I've used is a (000) Another point about the Henrob is it uses 4 lb oxygen and 4 lb acetylene, so there is a saving on gas. In addition, the Henrob produces a hotter flame. I can't explain why using less oxygen and acetylene produces a hotter flame. It just does. For more information on the Henrob (DHC 2000) check out detroittorch.com/
@peterford93696 жыл бұрын
George Goehl Hi George,, Obviously we get our pressure at the regulator, and fine tune at the gun or torch controls. 4 pounds on both the gasses is low so it has to be tge compression of the gasses at the tip has to be the answer. I guess I figured you'd have every tip ever made. Due to your detailed work you do. Heck let's put it this way, I'd rather buy a 20 dollar very fine tip for my torch rather than pay 450,00 for the Henrob gun,,,if it's possible.😁 Thanks again George.

Hey, I am not selling torches. I like using the Henrob (DHC 2000) . I did the video to show that there are alternatives, not to encourage buyers.

George Goehl Hi George,, I understand,,,not what I was inferring. Thanks.
@89747311 жыл бұрын
I think it has something to do with the mixing chamber. Mixing the oxygen and acetylene. This is just a guess on my part. Also, the flame is hotter even thought regulator pressure is less than for a regular torch. For better information check out, cutlikeplasma web site. Yes, it does save time.

George Goehl Hi George,,I had asked about the use of the henrob style torch over the standard stick handle torch. I cannot see why with the proper tips you couldn't get the same results. Beings you use both regularly, maybe you can answer . I cannot see why a fine tipped standard torch could not achieve the same fine cut or weld? Unless they just don't make tips as fine,for stick style torches. Thanks George.

what kind of filler rod did you use on the steel?
@8974737 жыл бұрын
Brazed (gold color) with 3/32 standard brazing rod. Most of what I did on this piece is Fuse welding. Melting both sides to form as one. I did do the ends with a 1/16th RG 45 mild steel gas welding rod.

copper to hot rolled steel? is brazin bronze rod flux coated?
@8974736 жыл бұрын
Brazing cold rolled is easier as it doesn't have the mill scale that hot rolled has. It's been my experience that grinding off the mill scale on hot rolled steel increases the quality of the braze. For oxidized or rusted steel it 's best to clean off the metal and use flux. In my work I use all new material so I need very little flux. This video explains more of how I use flux. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gax-ZpunrbG1hI0.html

I have one of the old Henrob torches and a cheap set of Chamble Hausfield gauges/regulators. I am a beginner welder and an old fatman. Old dog trying to learn a new trick. I can't seem to get the pressures set properly and too cheap to buy a proper set of gauges/regulators. Can you give me a pointer to get the pressures set properly so I can play with this wonderful tool.....

Ray, there is a procedure for setting up generic regulators for the Henrob torch. Not sure I still have that information, but will look. If I still have it, I'll get back to you. It will be a few days as I will not be in my office till later this week.

Thanks George for the reply....There is a proceedure for setting the pressures with generiic gauges and I have been trying to follow them. The problem is that when I get to step that requires one to start opening the O2 regulator which is to start showing a blue flame ( I think ) it just blows out the gas flame...... I do believe that this is a great tool if I can just get the regulators set correctly. I have never messed with any gas rig so It is all new to me......

@@rayditzenberger9517 I do find the Henrob torch difficult to light right at first. Very touchy. Once I start using it, all goes fine. Why that first start is a problem, I have no idea. I think you'll just have to practice till you get used to it.

Thanks George for your help.....Someone has sent me a site that has explained the gauge setup a little differently that I think has fixed my problem.... I am not home right now and won't be for a few days but I am betting that I will be in business with the torch as soon as I get back.....thanks again for your help. I hope the welding goes better than the setup proceedure.....I am really looking forward to the learning experience.

hey, what are those clamps you are using to hold the pieces in place at 2:05?. Watched a bunch of your videos a few years ago and I am trying to have fun during this quarantine with the cobra.

Go to Amazon and search for "picture frame vice". The ones I'm using in the video are die case, so I can't get the heat too near them or they would melt. There are probably ones made of steel, but I've never been able to find any.

@@897473 thank you, I use magnetic clamps but I am interested in nonferrous gas welding, so those should come in handy for tacking. I have used multiple mag clamps to make non magnetic metals holders but the setup is quite frankly insane. I have clico clamps that work for plates (also die cast), but the right angles are tricky.
@cdrom10703 жыл бұрын
Cleco clamps as in the actual clamps, some people are not familiar with them.. they are like small parallel jaw spring loaded pliers. The common one is the cleco rivet, which I do not like because it require a hole, however less if an issue if you have a plasma cutter to quickly make pilots.
@8974733 жыл бұрын
@@cdrom1070 I did that video before I knew of or had magnetic clamps. I purposely tack welded that piece because I wanted to show using the torch. But, in normal usage, I would set up with Magswitch magnets and tack weld with the mig. Then fuse weld with the torch.

Pieces are finished and gone. If you are looking for penetration, you might look at sites that sell these torches. Some have some good videos on welding heavier materials.
