Examples of Positive and Negative Reinforcement and Punishment: Operant Conditioning Explained
- Positive reinforcement - add something to increase behavior - add something they like to continue behavior (adding yoga after lifting if athletes use good spotting technique)
- Negative reinforcement - take something away to increase behavior (only doing 15 burpees instead of the 30 planned to reinforce having good main lifts)
- Positive punishment - adding something to decrease behavior (adding sprints to decrease behavior of texting during a lift)
- Negative punishment - take something away to decrease behavior (taking away yoga to decrease poor spotting habits)
This should be helpful in studying for the NSCA CSCS Exam.

I do have to say that a negative punishment hurts me more than a positive punishment does because I tend to have a harder time healing emotional wounds!

For my own clarification not having pressure on a dog's collar when it is in the proper position during a walk is an example of negative reinforcement, removing something to increase the behavior of walking in the proper position. Verbally correcting a dog for barking at the door is an example of positive punishment to decrease the behavior of barking at the door.

From the video that you watched, what do you think is the audience effect towards an athlete/player? If the audience is quite rude and negative vs. an audience being supportive and cheerful? Which one do you think would be the reinforcement and the punishment?

Being supportive and cheerful could be the reinforcement and being rude and negative could the punish if am not wrong sir.

Positive reinforcement means that someone wasn’t entitled to reward on the first place absent acting in compliance. So after compliance, we extend the reward. Negative reinforcement means that someone was entitled to some privilege before the act, and now because of non compliance, this privilege was taken away. Positive reward extends a privilege that wasn’t available before compliance. Positive punishment is increasing the level of discomfort when non compliance occurs for some act that was naturally uncomfortable. Negative reward is taking away a privilege or right that was extended or was available prior to non compliance. Negative punishment is the taking away of something that was less comfortable and replacing it with something more uncomfortable. Need to check my understanding. I realize that this could easily be confusing unless each key word in the definition is given its full meaning and effect.

Regarding your positive punishment example, would it be wise to use physical training such as sprints as punishment when in other instances, "sprints" would be considered necessary conditioning to improve the athletes' ability? If physical punishment is used in a sport setting, then whatever skill you used to punish with would forever have a negative (bad) connotation to it. The athletes' would then feel like they were being punished by having to do sprints in a workout. Humans avoid punishment. Therefore, they will then avoid sprinting. I would recommend punishing without the use of physical conditioning IMHO.

Yea that's a fair point. It was really just an off the head example but probably not the best to do in real life

Yes and no. Sprints are necessary and Most dislike them...hense using them as a negative punishment. And yes there xan be a negative connotation attached to that action however i is usually not something that will Hurt or harm the trainee And it will almost always cause the action that is being punished to Stop. Now if it was used in a NON TRAINING SETTING, like for example having your 16yr old son running sprints in the yard bc he didnt clean his room, thats a problem

If sprints or other types of training are necessary for the athlete to develop a skill, it makes more sense to find a way to associate positive thoughts and emotions to it, rather than condition the athlete to try to avoid/prevent that form of training

Hey man your example of -R is incorrect. 2 things important to remember with the quadrants: They are in the eye of the beholder, No the person applying them. And also negative reinforcement happens before the behaviour not after. Negative Reinforcement ➡️behaviour Behaviour ➡️positive reinforcement. If you they performed well ➡️ to reinforce them by making them do less work. (You’ve just given them a positive experience, it’s +R) If you yelled at them, until they worked harder and then you stopped when they performed the correct standard. That would be negative reinforcement.
