@@muizzy Highway Code: Stop Signs and Lines Compared to some countries, the UK does not utilize a great deal of stop signs and instead the give way sign is most frequently used. Both the give way and stop sign are regulatory signs, meaning that they are giving an order. The difference between give way and stop sign other than the shape, is the text telling you what must be done. A give way sign tells you that you must give way to traffic ahead and a stop sign tells you that you must stop. *Do you have to stop at a stop sign? The simple answer is yes!* My emphasis. Try again, but try harder.

First clip is stupid. 30mph is far too low for that kind of road, even with the roadworks. It would be dangerous to slow to 30mph before the sign. Speed doesn't kill, speed difference does. The majority of the traffic would still be going 50mph+ by the time they hit the sign.

Yes you have a point, that is one of the difficult dilemmas one is confronted with while driving in actual conditions, whether to follow the rule and risk being a damn nuisance on the road. I have faced similar situations where the speed limit was low, but other road users would go at a much higher speed. Of course I had to keep up with the speed of the traffic, otherwise I risked being rear ended. But as a general rule I would follow the posted speed limits, as they are there for a reason.

*Nobody* drives in 'driving test mode' after they pass their test - NOBODY, including examiners and people with advanced driving certificates. You learn the silly rules and adhere to them to get yourself through the test. Then, and only then, you start learning how to drive properly. The first clip was unfortunate, as the nearside speed sign is hidden by the tree and only clearly visible a couple of car lengths. Normally you would see advance notice of the lane closure and to reduce speed (often 20mph below the speed limit on a dual carriage way ). @davidpnewton
@davidpnewton 5 жыл бұрын
The serious fault on that penultimate one was correct according to the signage and law. However it shows the problems that occur because of two things: 1. Poor signage and road markings;2. Inappropriate speed limits; Why is that red tarmac there? Why is it across the whole road? Looking at Google Streetview imagery from 2008 before the tarmac wore down dangerously it has a 30 painted on it. Clearly it is there to remind drivers coming the other way of the speed limit. There is no extra hazard to remind drivers going in the direction of the test candidate of. So why do drivers have to be reminded of the speed limit? Could it be that the road is not actually an urban one? Could it be that therefore a speed limit of 30 mph is NOT appropriate for that road? I do believe that is the case. So if a 30 mph speed limit is not appropriate for that section of road what is? It is not fully rural so national speed limit would not be appropriate. How about 40 mph? Yes that sounds about right. The speed limit should change from 30 mph to 40 mph pretty much where the red tarmac is. The speed limit should then be 40 mph until changing to national speed limit where it actually changes from 30 mph to national speed limit. On that section of road there are only a limited number of houses on one side of the road, each of which is a considerable distance apart. The highways authority have caused a hazard on that road by an inappropriate speed limit for the road conditions. In order to remind drivers of the inappropriate speed limit they have created another hazard by putting coloured tarmac across the road which wears quickly, thus becoming ambiguous and distracting to drivers. Nice going Oxfordshire County Council.

I think that street is too narrow..with opposite lanes very close to each other. I think that's the reason why the speed limit is low. @davidpnewton

@@arbjful that road is quite wide enough for two vehicles to pass each other at full speed with no problems. Also whether the road is wet or dry has no effect on the speed limit set. The view to the right is severely restricted, hence the stop sign. The driver is under instruction as a learner to comply with road signs which he did not. It may be a small technical fault but it is enough to fail the test. That is the point the instructor in the video is making. If the old bill was behind him then he could easily receive 3 points on his licence and a nice fat fine supported by the video as evidence that they did not stop. When did stop mean "really slow forward motion"? It is not so absurd when it means you have failed your driving test, more of a major error when you are faced with retaking it. We did some practices in the strange town & this became a case in point during one of our practices, and she had the same approach to the same roundabout in her test, thus got it right! Passed it all first time few years back, and I'm so glad i dont have to deal with any of this bullshit anymore. I think these kind of videos are great for people learning to drive. What we more experienced drivers take for granted isn't always obvious to a learner. Also, anyone wanting to pass their test needs to drive to the letter regardless of how (seemingly) silly some rules might appear. Luckily, when I passed my test, I had a guy walking in front of me waving a red flag which might have helped!

the first clip really gets me, as a new driver. i see these a lot on duel carriageways and smart motorways. traffic is usually reduced to 40 from 70. so my natural reaction is to try and slow down. but everyone one else on the road continues doing 70, so i cannot slow down to 40 as the sign requests. because i'll cause a crash as everyone else is doing normal speed.

The fact that we're all not dying all the time in car crashes shows that slowing after passing the sign is not dangerous and it's just one of the many stupid technicalities that are unneeded in the driving test. Though I did have a Sailing Instructor once you taught me (as we were crossing that path of a mega tanker that was not going to give way to sail regardless of maritime rules) that it is best to not only do the right thing (giving way in my case) but make it very obvious what you are doing so that other know what is in your mind.

When you encounter a STOP sign you must stop AT THE LINE more people get it wrong by stopping short. In a place where you can't see enough of the main road/s to take a safe decision of if it is safe to emerge. Then they peep and creep forwards and emerge on the roll. They have failed to stop at the line. They need a second stop to be an actual STOP AT THE LINE in a position where a proper assessment can be made. The reason the examiner fails you is because at a later stage in your driving career it is likely you will just come out at a stop junction and cause a serious accident. Hence serious error.

Some of these 'faults' are really dumb like pull the handbrake at the stop sign, I wonder if the instructor does that when he drives. I believe when a student is assessed the instructors should take into consideration their own driving and how rules are aplied in the real life, no just in tests, as that student even if they pass complying with all the rules you throw at them you still wont be able to see what their driving style will actually be after they pass.

Throughout a discussion on another comment I made here something has become apparent to me. Stop signs are perfect examples of laws for its own sake. Its purpose is to force people to take the extra precaution needed before driving onto a road from a difficult junction, but the problem is that this law is unambiguous and absolute. This means that it imposes a condition which in certain circumstances will in reality be absurd. In fact, the proof lies with yield signs. They fulfill much of the same purpose, but with less specificity. Yet, you could without issue replace all stop signs with yield signs and achieve the same effect since the onus is on the driver to ensure he/she doesn't impede traffic, failing to yield, and if that requires a full stop then that's fine. In fact it's already implied. If anything, stop signs are useful warnings for particularly difficult junctions which more than likely will require something very close to a full stop. Instead of imposing unambiguous reality distorting conditions like a full stop, stop signs would be more useful as a yield sign warning you to proceed with extreme caution. There's no doubt in my mind anymore since the logic is rock solid. A law shouldn't exist for its own sake. It should exist to fulfill a purpose in a meaningful manner. Denying this is the same as being a lawful sheep who would defend similar laws, in the most extreme case laws demanding one to exterminate a certain group of people, for example, since the logic of defending a law for its own sake automatically will be able to logically extend to any absurd law. "The law is the law, therefore it's good". I almost feel like I've had a revelation.

1.30 - this one really irritates me. Many decades ago I can still hear my instructor telling me, never bump up onto the kerb until you pass your test, then unless the road is adequately wide or the pavement is too narrow, bump up on the pavement to reduce impedance to other road users - I understand the pavement user argument too however I would never reduce the pavement width so much that a pram, wheelchair or disabled scooter could not pass. Around here if people did not park bumped up on the pavement the roads would be paralysed. However, instructors like you ingrain a driving habit that causes more issues that it is supposed to prevent. I can think of 3 kids on my street who passed in the last year or so and not one of them would I let out on the road they are all awful. 1 of them parks about 2 feet from the kerb, opposite driveways and clearly thinks this is parked suitably - I used to see her instructor turn up and park similarly, albeit closer to the kerb, so this girl now believes in her daft little head that she is driving and parking well! Another lad parks on the road adjacent to the kerb but does so opposite parked cars (bumped up on the pavement) thus reducing the road to JUST about a cars width, I have had to push in mirrors to pass him. So to all learner drivers reading this and instructors, take a minute to think about this one and perhaps encourage parking by common sense, rather than by the book all the time. You inconvenience more people parking "by the book" then you do bumping up onto the kerb a bit. Your comment "...as a result no pedestrians could get by" is just plain rubbish. Also, drivers, consider damage to your vehicle by leaving it hanging out in the middle of the road - I have seen plenty of wing mirrors smashed and scrapes to "properly parked" cars.
