I have one with eggs, my first time with a tank, and its filterless. I just change the water every few days, and seems to be doing well. I started with some small aquatic plants, a lot of bio active substrate, rocks from a local stream (scrubbed thoroughly), some drift wood from the store, and added botanicals later on. Its over a month old now, and i noticed the eggs a couple weeks ago, so i think its going well.

I'm new to having an aquarium and to keeping shrimps specifically. But I must be doing something right. Because I have no lack of shedding or pregnant shrimp. It's such a joy to just observe the goings on in my tank for hours on end. Thank you for taking the time and effort to educate newbies like myself. Your channel has proven to be an invaluable source of information. I finally found a satisfying answer, as to why some of my usually peacefully grazing adult shrimp, turned in to speeding maniacs, racing all through the tank. 😄

SO glad to hear you recommend leaving the exoskeletons in the tank post-molting! It’s something I have always thought to be a bit of a “no-brainer”: shrimp expend a lot of energy and need specific nutrients to molt and regrow their exoskeletons, and they will readily gobble them up after they shed them off! Makes sense since the molts would contain many of the nutrients they need to continue that process, so eating the molts allows the shrimp an opportunity to regain at least a portion of what was lost. It’s crazy to me how many resources say to remove them… (My snails also will readily consume any shrimp molts they find-I imagine they are also consuming some of those precious minerals/nutrients)

Hi Alex, I Love watching your video’s on shrimp. I’ve been keeping Cherry and Rili shrimp since 2015. Probably close or over four years ago I saw your beautiful Blue Dreams and you made me want to have some of my own. I believe I had asked you some questions about them too and you’ve always been very helpful. I’ve had my own now for over three years that I’ve purchased at my lfs that caters to really nice planted scapes too that I got interested in also. I had decided to break down a tank last year and combine all my neocaridina’s into one aquarium with my cpd’s and chili rasbora’s so I have a variety of colored shrimp to red, different shades of blues, green, yellow, stripped shrimp, and to what’s probably considered the “wild” brown shrimp. No more rili though which I thought was interesting. They all bred out! I’m okay with all of that for it was a conscious choice I made because of health issues I had so I did what was best for myself and my animals. Anyway, I rarely comment here but after watching this video today reminded me of how much you got me interested in shrimp and I had learned a lot from you of how to care for them and my adorable little micro fish. Thank you Alex. My aquarium is going strong 7 years later. I use to keep goldfish prior to what I keep now. I was happy to hear that you decided to keep your future video’s shorter. Gives me more time to watch your video’s 😀

Subscribed! This is some of the best info I’ve seen about this. I have never had problems keeping Amanos, but my Bloody Mary colony was never very successful. Was down to my last 3 males, so I gave up on BMs and got a couple dozen regular RCS about 3 wks ago. My beautiful boys are happy again, and there are 2 berried females. Several of the RCS are super fiery red! My only regret is I set this tank up 2 yrs ago with Fluval Stratum instead of an inert substrate. 🤦‍♀️ Maybe why I could never dial my water in just right. So now I use Wonder Shells and a bit of crushed coral and the params are better. The Mystery Snails get Snello with extra calcium, and the shrimpies love that, too. Fingers crossed for some babies soon!

Thank you SO much for making this. I just got into keeping shrimp, did a 20% water change because I had to clean some food up from the bottom that was kinda ick, and not long after I found my first exo! I was worried I'd stressed them out too much or something despite being very very careful about acclimation and not messing with the tank too much while they're adjusting.. even though I have this fantastic hidey I want to put in for them XD But yeah, I was getting a little paranoid, but this helped ease my fears, and now I understand that saddle thing.. a couple of mine have that, ones is HUGE, so she's probably the one that split, not entirely sure. I was told to keep lights dim or off for the first few days by several people, so.. Just trying to make sure my shrimp feel comfortable.

Tank you so much for this info I’m just starting my first fancy shrimp only tank. My choice is the Orange Sakura shrimp. I’d 3 shrimp in a planted 2.5 gallon but I’ve only one left. It’s got a floating and sunken betta log various pieces of marimo moss balls, pieces of Christmas and Java moss. I’ve floating Anubis Nana petite as well. It’s got 2 inches of sand and smooth river stones and sponge filter all from established tanks that ran from one to over 2 years. I’m cycling the aquarium with three juvenile zebra danios so small they’re the size of my thumb nail. One has the long fin genes. 🤗🇨🇦

I had about five or six little blue shrimp that I got from a breeder. I went to a pet store and saw that they had a multicolored shrimp tank. They are a bit more expensive at the pet store so when I saw pregnant females I naturally thought that would be an easy way to get more shrimp. I did not think about the stress on a pregnant mother Changing tanks which I probably should have won't do that again. It has been about a week and a half since I bought the two. one yellow and one red. The red one is very large and looked very pale when I bought it. I actually saw it shed the other night which made me very excited Not only because my tank is apparently okay but also because I figured it Would look brand new. But it still has some paleness like a white overcoat. And i'm starting to wonder if they actually are pregnant, or if that is just how they look. Wish I could post a pic but I don't see an option for that. It looks very much like the large dark red one in your video though. Will a large, very dark red shrimp look pregnant all the time?And also do older shrimp get a more faded. Look even after shedding?

What a great video! I’ve got a bit of a problem in one of my shrimp Bowls that I’m hoping you can help with- i have blue velvets and red cherries in two separate bowls (no filter no co2) both bowls had berried shrimps that gave birth at the same times - and in my red bowl they’re doing great, two batches of babies in the last couple of weeks and they’re growing well. But in the blue bowl, I’ve not seen Any of the babies at all in days! Two batches of babies and I can’t see any. I’ve just had a third shrimp give birth jn the blue bowl a couple of days ago, and I can still see a few babies swimming around (less than the last couple of days though) but I have no idea what is wrong. Any suggestions what i should look out for that could cause a problem?

Maybe buy some "bacter AE" (Through Aquatic Arts if you want 15% off... SECRET15 Code) but Amazon or wherever has it too... add a pinch of that and it'll encourage more biofilm/protein and vitamins for the baby shrimp. It could be that...also blue shrimp tend to have less babies for some odd reason too. (Inbreeding perhaps)... just give them time also, many times some lines grow slower and they'll randomly appear after a month or 2 of seeing very few . Best of luck to you!

So they spawn from 6 months old to 3 years old as a general rule of thumb.... 3/4ths of their life span, approximately. Also i have lots of videos on how each color shrimp was made. Neocaridina genetics or color lines @fishtory in the search box should bring up the videos for yuh :)

already knew a lot of this info (not a bad thing) but i did not hear about the different markings symbolizing that they’re older!! i’ve been keeping a mixed tank of Neos for like three months and the last two months they’ve been doing AMAZING. had two give birth in the last three weeks and another that’s pregnant right now. anyway, a few of mine have those “pale” or more “washed out” colors on their backs and i always wondered if they were OKAY or if there was something bad but i had no idea how to even go about finding out haha. VERY good to know!! thank you for the refresher on some info an sharing your knowledge with us! i do have one question that i’ve been wondering as well. if a female that is saddled doesn’t get fertilized/pregnant, does it negatively affect them at all? or do they just shed again and then try to get pregnant all over? i haven’t noticed that it was bad so far, but i have mostly females atm and i just want to make sure all my girls get to be mamas and that it wont harm or hold them back in anyway. also what are the parameters of this tank you’re showing? it’s really cool that you’ve managed to keep Neos and Caridinas in the same tank! i know it’s possible but usually one does better than the other. just curious cus they all seem to be very happy!!!🥰

So this tank is about 100 tds with brightwell soil and about a quarter cub of crushed coral/shells scattered in the substrate for a slight buffer. Then a few leafs are added a year and lots of floating plants that get tossed as they grow every week or two (safety against nitrates). Great question about the saddled females too! So they will simply discard the eggs If they are very mature females, by laying them and often eating them again...or in younger shrimp they'll absorb the nutrients before the saddle has visible little spheres of eggs. It doesn't seem to harm them, from my experience.

@@Fishtory Hi, I have a female shrimp that is making her appearances again and coming up to the front of the tank to say hi to me. She was very pregnant/berried and holding her babies the last time I saw her. I could see their little eyes. Now that I see her coming out in the open part of the tank I see that she is no longer pregnant. But, I don't see any newborn shrimp babies hanging out in the tank. I only have shrimp in the tank, and one tiny newborn (about two weeks old) molly fry. The tank is well established with biofilm. Maybe she had a late term miscarriage? Maybe the babies are hiding in the back of the tank behind the plants where she stayed at while pregnant and I just can't see them yet? She seems like she is doing ok, but I don't know if I can say the same for her babies. The other shrimp all seem happy and healthy and active. Should I do a thorough search in the tank for them? Are the babies dead?

Yeah I would in a small container like that. Then she can also eat some of her exo. If she's low on any minerals...if she doesn't eat it at all, then you'll know your water has all the nutrients she could need. Best of luck my friend!

@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah they can be together it's just a recessive clear chitin phenotype/gene that causes rilis..so you can keep them with base colors that are the same. The only problem, is it reduces the number of rilis over time...so if you don't mind ending up with all red shrimp one day...it's okay

Speaking of female care, do you have any advice on how to safely move shrimp without stressing them much? I'm thinking I might lower the water level down to very low and not take them out and move the tank carefully to the back seat of the car. It'd take a lot of effort to catch all my shrimp since there's so many of them and I'm also moving cities.
@Fishtory

Yes that's how I would do it...remove any stuff that will shift or could smush them, then just move it with 10% or 20% of the water if it's a 20g or less

We’ve had success growing our colony and even had over 70 in our tank. We started loosing several at a time suddenly so checked the water parameters and found high nitrates. So we started doing daily water changes and even tho the parameters were good, we have continued loosing them. We are now down to 4, one of which is pregnant. I’m so concerned the babies won’t survive. Can you help me figure out what is going on and what we can do to stop these deaths? We are desperate and so sad we’ve lost almost all our colony.
