Actually, Wheein and Hwasa both do the background and adlibs, like @8:11 Wheein was doing those little ad libs during Moonbyul's rap. Wheein is constantly called the Backbone of Mamamoo because her voice fills in a lot of space that people miss and she usually get's noticed later than the other members due to this, she is extremely underrated.

And and actually Wheein does a lot of the background vocals as well as Moonbyul. She does a lot of the lower tones harmonizations

the only girl group i stan after bigbang and 2ne1. they are amazing. it's so hard to find a group that is real and not robotic. their stage presence is just incredible. and you can see how comfortable they are on the stage. their immortal songs medley made me fall for them real hard.

Just to clarify with the “Culture Appropriation”. People that were from the culture that Mamamoo was inspired by defended them and said that what they did wasn’t even culture appropriation, it was appreciation. For example the castle thing in the back, that was an inspiration from the fictional cartoon Aladdin. The castle was in a fictional place so it didn’t make any sense to make this into something it wasn’t. There are other things I would like to touch on, but I don’t I’m too lazy 😅. But just know that it’s mostly the anti-s that try and act like they are from the culture when they’re really not.

Basically, 99% of the CA arguments for the Agrabah version of Aya were created by Blinks who were upset that it featured a sample that was also used in How You Like That? and wanted to create drama surrounding Mamamoo. Like, someone said that the part where Moonbyul has a rifle is anti-Islamic, which is what sparked the whole controversy, but then the question becomes why are you associating guns with Islam. 👀 Also, Agrabah is a fake country and doesn't have a culture to appropriate. Does Disney's Aladdin suffer from the usual pitfalls of Orientalism? Yep. But I still love that film because I know what it is and what it's not. Mamamoo is from a small company and has almost zero protection from akgaes and haters who want to give them a hard time. In a later Aya performance they used a different Middle Eastern sample and they were accused of using the Islamic call to prayer, which is literal blasphemy. This was an almost plausible allegation because the theme of the performance was "Temple"...except that Muslims instantly debunked this claim. It not only wasn't the call to prayer but a woman was singing it and women do not do the call to prayer. Ever. The fact is that Mamamoo is low hanging fruit because they have had legit CA claims against them in the past, which were addressed immediately by RBW and Mamamoo themselves, and they don't have the massive fanbase or company resources to deter haters. It's great that you want to let your friend know that Mamamoo has CA concerns but let her decide for herself if she cares. One of the reasons that CA is almost never addressed in K-Pop is because White stans from America and elsewhere have weaponized it and use it against artists that they don't like. White stans have a tendency to hijack important cultural conversations from the people who would actually be affected by the CA and in the end labels and artists stop listening and nothing changes. Speaking as a Black fan of Mamamoo, we all have different internal lines. I personally wasn't offended when Hwasa wore a durag and thought she looked adorable(this was in Mamamoo's performance of AoA's "Good Luck" on Queendom) but I understand why others were offended by it and will never speak over them, speak for them, or center myself in any discussion about how the issue can be seen as offensive.

Actaully wheein is the one who do most of the background vocals that is why she mostly songs the chorus and a bit less line than the others cause she support she is like z backbone of mamamoo

As a person who is from the middle east, i can definitely say that mmm did nothing wrong. its just the crazy internet stans, especially twt stans, who make mmm always dirty. but the saddest thing about it that people belive what they say. its like they dont have their own opinions and brain cells.

Actually if you saw mr removed you can hear how wheein does most of the backup vocals that's why she doesn't get high notes parts like the rest even tho she can hit from whistle note to the lowest parts so clean & easily

Are you sure about Wheein? Solar seemed to give her religion, Hwasa's versatility impressed her, and Moonbyul's granny sweater swag seemed to captivate her. Maybe she's OT4 like many moomoos. lol I'll be interested to hear your conversation about cultural appropriation. I'm so done with the endless flak Mamamoo gets for being themselves and I now avoid as much of the nonsense as I can. From what I've seen, their MV and performance concepts are often deliberately distorted by malicious trolls who look for any excuse to bash MMM or else they're misunderstood by lazy thinkers who give knee-jerk responses rather than bother to ponder the underlying meaning or artistic intent behind what they do. In Aya the song, the MV and the choreo each draw from a wide variety of sources including middle eastern, latin, African and Brazillian but the costumes & set in the MV are the main reasons to wonder about cultural appropriation. What seems to get missed is that the set & costumes are based on orientalist Arabian Nights fantasies rather than authentic sources, for example Disney's Aladdin or the Ballets Russes production of Scheherazade over 100 years ago. So are they really appropriating another culture or are they instead exploring what happens when you live in a fantasy world based on exotic, fictional stories? Aya is a breakup song. Is Mamamoo perhaps trying to say that when we fall in love we write our own romance novel and get trapped in an illusionary narrative we invent ourselves? I find it fascinating that Solar, Moonbyul and Hwasa play blatantly fictional characters from worlds that have nothing to do with the orientalist set & costume design. In the course of the MV the three of them symbolically write an end to their love story via violent acts - Moonbyul kills her lingering feelings for the lover with an arrow, Hwasa extracts them like a rotten tooth, and Solar exorcizes them by ritualistically impaling the bowl of her tears with a dagger. In this scenario Wheein becomes Scheherazade, the one who tells the stories they enact. If you'll recall, Scheherazade told the Arabian Nights stories to survive her marriage one day and one story at a time. I think the important thing in Aya isn't the breakup itself, it's the painful yet empowering act of liberation from the mental web we weave and the romantic lies we tell ourselves.

its true hwasa did a lot of background vocal, but actually mostly wheein did it a lot in their song. especially when try to harmonize on "high tone" vocal on the back. Not comparing to each other, just they all did their perfect in background vocal. It just there is a reason why they called wheein as "backbone of mamamoo"

Didn't read through all the comments so I don't know if anyone said this already. Moonbyul writes all of her rap parts. She is one of the most credited (music credited) female artists is Kpop (I think 3rd, but can't remember). She also didn't start out as a rapper. She was a singer and was told by the company that she needed to focus on rapping if she wanted to debut. (She was in a reality show with several other girl group members where she talked about this)

I've watched quite a few people react to it now and it has yet to get old. :) I feel like cultural appropriation (CA) started off with the best intentions, especially when it came to people dressing up for Halloween as gang members or some nonsense like that. However, today's perception of CA really has gotten to the point where we cannot, as you said, give something exposure or deserved recognition. I feel that as long as a culture isn't adapted with the intention of mocking or degrading it, then we should take the opportunity to observe and expand our knowledge if possible. So in "Aya"'s case, someone could think "I wonder what music is popular in Arabic communities?" Similarly ... if someone with a background related to a piece of content has any concerns, we should definitely speak with them and understand. Have a conversation, ask what they would have liked to see instead. Learn from this, do some research, and pass it on! This is how ignorance is fixed.
