For the first time in centuries, scientists have exposed the original surface of what is traditionally considered the tomb of Jesus Christ. As the slab of marble was removed, revealing the Holy Bed, conservationists were surprised to discover something their instruments hadn’t detected: a layer of debris beneath the marble cover. They will analyze the debris to learn more about the ancient resting place.
Located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem, the tomb has been covered by marble cladding since at least A.D. 1555, and most likely centuries earlier. The modest tomb has never before been photographed, and no drawings exist. This is the first time anyone alive today has seen the Holy Bed.
This burial shelf is now enclosed by a small structure known as the Edicule (from the Latin aedicule, or "little house"), which was last reconstructed in 1808-1810 after being destroyed in a fire. The Edicule and the interior tomb are currently undergoing restoration by a team of scientists from the National Technical University of Athens under the direction of Chief Scientific Supervisor Professor Antonia Moropoulou.
The National Geographic Society, with the blessing of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem and other religious communities, formed a strategic alliance with the National Technical University of Athens for cultural heritage preservation. I went to this extraordinary church many years ago. The ambience ...there are no words. A very humbling and special place. I am not particularly religious per se but I was moved to tears such is the atmosphere. I also had a strong reaction when visiting the Garden of Gethsemane. The ancient olive trees are a wonder in themselves and have been carbon dated to over a thousand years old....at least!

Many believe that this isn't the actual tomb but to me it is irrelevant I have been there and noticed no special spiritual feelings there in fact because I am not catholic it was kind of overwhelming and I kept thinking "He is not here He has risen" as the scriptures tell us. I did love other holy sites and felt peace at the Garden of Gethsemane and a few others.

The description of pilgrims' reaction to visiting this place is on point. I sobbed, filled with awe and at a loss for words, for I was at the holiest place of my faith. Even after leaving from two minutes of weeping for joy - which seemed like an eternity - I still cried on a bench outside because like the Women, I too saw the empty Sepulchre, and knew He is Risen.

I've been there.The whole building does in fact radiate history & spiritual energy from all the millions who have prayed there or passed thru, & it's way dark inside. And multiple sacred spaces in one, multi faiths under one roof. P.S. : If you want a interesting story that reflects the constant complexities of the conflict that exists in the city of Jerusalem and Israel, look into the 'Immoveable Ladder' that still sits above the entrance to the COHS that hasn't been touched since the early 19th century because the varying faiths can't decide who gets to take it down. And now it is symbolic & has come to represent and highlight as an example as one of the many religious tensions that exist in Israel.

But you know what is surprising, I only say that when I experience a lot of pain. And sadly, when I experience success and happiness the first thing I'm thanking is ME. My self only. Do you understand me? That's the time, when I only focus in my self. Blind with, jealousy, envy and what if in life. But you know, when I start observing POSITIVELY my self and my surrounding. Erasing self doubt, envy, what if and negative things in my life. That's when I see that God is never silent. That He is really working. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher would certainly interest you then since it contains architecture from various periods in history. I think the earliest would be the Byzantine era, followed by Crusader era, and lastly Ottoman era developments. Also, since it’s built around the supposed site of the Crucifixion and Burial (and thus Resurrection), it has many chapels dedicated to events in the Passion narrative. Of course, its heart is the Aedicule which is a small shrine built around the tomb (which is just a slab of stone as per the narrative).

One night i was full of anxiety and stressing about something important so as i was laying in bed i was praying to God like i often do..like i have since I was a child, i was telling him all my worries then all of a sudden, Jesus spoke to me, in my mind and heart..loud and clear..he needed no introduction..i knew who was speaking to me. And he said, "DON'T BE AFRAID, I WILL BE WITH YOU" he also gave a me advise on what to do about my situation and he left me with so much peace and i fell asleep. Seriously, i never knew that could happen, caught me by complete surprise...yet it felt so natural. What an honor.

I've been to many sacred places and could feel the aura around them, but not in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The place was full of young tourists taking selfies. Most of them weren't religious. It was about as sacred as a Club 18-30 holiday.

That tomb is "supposedly" the tomb in which Jesus was laid, before HE was "RESURRECTED" not "restored", and IF it was really HIS tomb, and not someone else's ....of course it would have been sealed " after" HE was resurrected. Jacob Fritz is just saying what is true.... The true tomb, IF it still exists, in which HE was laid, has been empty since HE rose over 2000 years ago. But no one can really verify if THAT tomb really is the tomb in which HE laid because the original Basilica, which was the first "Christian" building to be built at that location, was not built until over 300 years AFTER Our LORD had risen. And, it is claimed that builders of the Basilica found a tomb and the "true cross" as they were excavating to build, so they assumed it to be the one in which Our LORD was laid, and the cross to be the one HE hung on. But 2000 years ago there was more than one tomb in the same area, and more than a few crosses on which others were hung, on Golgatha.

If there was a Jesus, his body has long rotted away into the ditch it was thrown in, as was the custom of the day, after Pilate crucified him for claiming to be King of the Jews. End of story. Nothing holy beyond what was made up about him after he died.. To believe otherwise is delusion which is fine if that's where a person wants to be. I don't.

Correct. He rose up into the sky in front of his disciples so there is no body there. Why they believed his body was buried there is because the Jews of that time didn’t support Jesus even though he was so great healed so many died on the cross and rose again. They most likely perpetuated a lie that his body was there to deny believers he rose again. Part of the reason the “tomb” was never opened. This should enforce the historical truth that he indeed rose up from death, and ascended to Heaven to be with our Father.

People worship an empty tomb. They pray on it, they cry on it, they fight for it, they spend whatever money they have to go and visit it while the needy is forgotten and there is little love and compassion all over the world. I wonder what Jesus think about that.

That is the unfortunate truth of people that don’t truly understand who Jesus was. I apologize if you’ve had a bad experience, truly I’m sorry. People say they’re Christians when they’re really just people looking to feel good about themselves, instead of worshiping a living God and living by His ways. There should be more love, but no one is willing to be morally right… since we see the hurt in the world let’s do something to change it! I'm a Muslim, but still, when they tried to open the slab, and the camera pan to the faces of the priests, my heart get a bit teary. clearly they are anxious, waiting to see the holy bed. their heart shaken, and their faith tested, as they are not knowing what beneath that slab. what evidence that can reaffirm their belief. They are crossing their hands, their fingers, their bodies, hope to see the confirmation, that they longed to see with their own eyes. Same goes to the Muslims, how they longed to see what is inside the sealed tomb of prophet Muhammad. Just to reaffirm their belief to the unseen being. Peace be upon them both ^^

Muslims should open Muhammads Tomb. It's very easy to know if Islam is true or not. They believe that a prophet would not decompose or be corrupted. So if they open the tomb and see a skeleton then it would show that Islam is not true but if his body is intact like some Saints then his message was true. Don't think Saudi Arabia would allow that to happen though, because it would affect their Money making machine.

I hear you. I grew up with religion, and believed because that’s what I was brought up to do, ignoring the bits that didn’t make sense. In my twenties I realised the truth of how unlikely the postulations of that religion are, how religions typically are born, and how the benefits of them are generally outweighed by the behaviours of their leaders and the loss of what we could be as a race. The ability of people to self-delude in order to maintain faith of some omnipotent, omnipresent, benevolent being with a plan just astounds me.

The Islamic prophet was a war monger who spread his message through force in contrast to Christ and his true disciples (not the false Christians who appeared later) who spread their message to those willing to listen with love and without the use of force. Islam is an amalgamation of Judaism, the Christianity of the time and traditional Arabic tribal religion (the Kaaba and the Hajj were both of pagan origin). Also because the Quran was written in no particular order other than size there is no way to ascertain which parts supersede the others. This concept is also a strange one because the book is supposedly from eternity. While claiming it is preserved by God while the bible was somehow unable to be preserved also makes no sense. Ultimately it is not a competition between holy books but one should really open his heart to God and ask his guidance in finding truth without allowing biases to cloud the process. I wish you peace and the blessing of God in this regard.

They haven't forgotten. The Christian faith is centered around the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. All those Christians knew it was empty. They were just eager to see the resting place of the Savior.

@@sharenalemmens1455 in newer translations yes. It was a cave with a stone. This use of language still gets the main point across. Do note that the people who worship in this temple are directly linked to the very people who put the Bible together. In any case, it's a tradition of the Christian Church to plant a church where a saint had been martyred. The temple they're standing in was built over the tomb of Jesus after Rome's seige on Jerusalem and the old temple was destroyed as Christ said.

I'm no biblical expert, I haven't been to church since i was a child, but didn't Christ resurrect from his final resting place? And also he is a big deal now but at the time he was an unknown jew with a small amount of followers, so would he really of had a marble tomb???
