EXCLUSIVE: AWC footage of a dingo hunting a feral pig. As far as we know, the first footage of its kind. This footage showcases the important ecological role of the dingo. Filmed just outside the boundary of Pungalina-Seven Emu in a remote area near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
WARNING: the hunting footage may upset some viewers.

They don’t hunt in packs but sometimes in loose aggregations of two or three. I saw two take on a large goanna. I always see them on Fraser Is and other than with pups they’ve been solitary. In Croajingalong national park I could hear many howling at night but when raiding the Tern’s nests below the dunes they’ve always been solitary too.

Not just feral cats, foxes and rabbits. We now know feral pigs are also on the menu too. Further evidence that our top predator is an essential part of a healthy ecosystem. It's not just feral pigs they help control, the also help keep the populations of introduced mice, rabbits, foxes and most importantly feral cats in line. The Dingo may not have originally come from Australia, but being the country's apex predator for thousands of years has made them important members of Australia's ecosystem and if they disappear all of Austraila is in serious ecological trouble.

If you shoot the lactating sow, you remove a vector of reproduction, and your dingos should be able to snap up the little piglet/ shoats, which do not have those razor tusks to defend themselves yet. This is a strategy in Texas and the south of the USA, where our coyotes and feral dogs and maybe a few cougars eat the tender snack. Your feral sow's meat is more tender than the boar, have a nice barbecue. There are videos on KZfaq and Rumble for butchering and preserving the meat. Happy hunting.🙂

Curious how have you monetized the hunting of them? I remember reading about how they monetized hunting snakes in England so some wise guys started snake farms to really cash in. @@goblinmoblin4869 Hog huntin' trips. Ppl will pay to hunt hog from a helicopter, or to gang up on sounders at night with good rifles. The real problem when hunting hog in TX is that most of the land is private, and it takes a lot of time to set up hunting with the ranchers (understandable bc of trespassing concerns and possible damage to livestock from flying lead). If ranchers & hunters find out a way to negotiate faster, them hawgs are goin' down... Good meat, great fun to hunt and available all year long

@that.schamp

In central Texas, I've noticed that the local coyote band seem to often be in proximity to the sounders of hogs that are tearing the place up. I rarely see a sow with more than one or two young at a time, although they normally have 6-8 per litter. I would surprised if the coyotes are not separating the youngsters and enjoying some bacon. Obviously, it's not enough pressure to control the population, but every dead hog is a bonus. As easy as it is for Livestock Guardians Dogs to deter coyotes, I figure the coyotes are a net benefit, as they are removing plenty of pests.

We might think this is rare but my guess is dingo's have been taking small piglets for a long time. The dingo is an opportunist so why wouldn't they prey on such an abundant food source. Thanks to our shooting pigs perhaps the Dingo's have developed a taste for bacon. The sow shown only had one piglet so maybe that Dingo had already taken the rest of the litter.

The sows are the vectors of feral pig population, here in Texas, USA I go first for the alpha sow. If I am hunting with a bow or crossbow, I grease the shaft and try to line up two, one behind the other, and get two. It works about half the time. Then I invite the neighbors and we have a big barbecue. The family dogs eat well, too. Here in Texas we can hunt with no bag limits, year around. The general state hunting license is about $100 (I don't know what your exchange rate is.). You need the permission of the property owner, but in east and south Texas where the more productive agriculture is, they almost always give permission because the pigs are such a terrible problem. We also have ground nesting birds we have to protect. You probably do, too. Finally, it is legal to hunt or trap feral pigs over bait. Corn (maize)works, some fisheads will draw them from far away.

It's a bit surprising that the mother hog didn't protect her baby better. We see feral hogs inflicting great damage and sometimes death on dogs. Yes, Dingo's are different than truly domesticated dogs but we've seen breeds like the Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, American Pitbull Terrier, Boerboel, etc., all get hurt badly by feral hogs. It just seems like the hogs could have done a much better job against one, single Dingo. Perhaps, the behavior of Australian feral hogs are a bit different than feral hogs in other places. Regardless, the Dingo got himself a meal while doing Australia a favor. Well done.

Is there a program to hunt the feral pigs?
@AustralianWildlifeConservancy
@AustralianWildlifeConservancy Жыл бұрын
Good question! AWC implements a range of management strategies including mustering, shooting and trapping as well as baiting for feral pigs. The presence of feral herbivores is monitored through the use of remote camera traps and regular checking of fencing and tracks, which informs AWC’s threat management program.

They eat everything, including native vegetation required by native species, and any farm crops, and even some animals like ground nesting birds. They dig up massive areas and ruin farmland. They reproduce and grow very quickly, and out-compete everything, and have few effective predators since they are strong, tough, and fast. They are also aggressive and dangerous with their tusks, even attacking people.

Good question! Pigs cause devastating damage to wetlands, spread invasive weeds, dig up plants, spoil water quality (affecting fish populations), eat the eggs of emus, cassowaries, turtles and crocodiles, eat native mussels and land crabs, and impact negatively on ground dwelling wildlife like birds and goannas.

Twice I have seen the same of a dingo harassing a sound of pigs to isolate a young pig and once of a pack of dingoes in a coordinated attack to isolate young ones by some attacking the dominant pigs and the others flanking to catch small pigs. For the small number of calves taken by dingoes is far outweighed by the larger number of young pigs taken and keeping them in some form of check. When dingoes are targeted by graziers the pig numbers explode in that area.

Dingos are themselves responsible to driving a few native species to extinction on the Australian mainland, such as the Tasmanian tiger which used to also live on the continent. I'm not sure if introducing another non-native species to combat a different one is the way to go. Besides, gray wolves used to be native to Texas, I think? Maybe just bring those back instead?

Maybe maybe not? More research required whatever Australia needs it's apex predators to control cats, foxes et al., Interestingly Dingo's don't chase cows often as they don't run but sheep, like foxes in a chicken house they go 'berzerk' become highly aroused when prey runs like most hunters. Combo of the 'trophic cascade ' dingo's and herd protection animals such as dog (expensive), donkey, llama and goat way cheaper will probably work best in the future? Just remembered feral goats way more profitable than sheep now so maybe change your stock animals? Floods, lack of water, soil erosion, poor oxygen, predators etc., etc., etc., nature and her natural systems that we have displaced have the answer. We do not require virus's and guns! Enjoy.

Only ever seen a pig come back to help another pig once, it was a halfhearted attack, a quick hit up the belly of a dog by a sow ,the dog had hold of a 115kg boar , it didn’t phase the dog at all but then a sow is no real threat to a good pig dog
