Exclusive Dezeen footage reveals demolition of Robin Hood Gardens

This exclusive video footage shot by Dezeen shows a huge section of the brutalist Robin Hood Gardens estate being torn apart by a demolition claw.
Destruction of the seminal 1970s estate in east London, designed by architects Alison and Peter Smithson, first began in August 2017. But the two concrete slab blocks that make up the complex have remained largely intact until now.
Dezeen's video footage reveals that demolition machines started pulling apart the western block earlier this week. The film shows a claw-like machine tearing down an entire section of the seven-storey building.
The machine can be seen pulling through the building's "streets in the sky" - the network of outdoor walkways connecting every home, and one of the key elements of the Smithsons' celebrated design.
It can also be seen knocking out windows and tearing through floors.

Actually, I think it's kinda sad, Robin Hood gardens may be regarded as a failed attempt, but it was at least an attempt, to build social housing based on actual observations of people (unlike Pruitt Igoe etc). True ugliness in Brutalist (or any) architecture is when it forgets about the people living there

Amazing, knock it the hell down. Back in the day I'd deliver mail around the area and when I drove by that building I felt in serious danger. There was all sorts of crime in that block, and it looked horrible and was based off of some Soviet flat. It's gone for good now I just hope they tear down the small remainder of the estate.

The architects aim was to build cheap housing for the poor , nowadays these building are being demolished and new ones being made for the rich

Good riddance to this culturally bankrupt garbage. Architecture isn’t supposed to be art. Art can be put in a museum. Architecture needs to be lived in. Inflicting something this hideous and soul crushing on actual, living breathing humans should be a crime.
