This exclusive Robert E. Petersen Library collection tour, led by the Petersen Archivist, Laura Fisher takes you into the labyrinth of the Petersen lower level. Covering 2 city blocks the Robert E. Petersen library houses photographs, film, and 3D objects.
Consisting of more than 10 million images, the Petersen Publishing Archive is a collection of physical photographic negatives, transparencies, and film that were originally shot for Petersen publications between the 1940s and 1980s. Through the generosity of The Margie and Robert E. Petersen Foundation, SEMA, and the Motortrend Group, the Petersen car museum was able to digitize over 1.5M of the most significant images and continues acquiring and preserving automotive archives from around the world.

You should explain to folks who come visit the museum that part of their admission charge goes to maintain this wonderful collection.

Hopefully Laura can one day find a famous (early) Hot Rod magazine cover (and other magazines) and then showcase the cover feature itself with the photographers slides (artwork) and writers notes in creation of the article. Undoubtedly there must be some truly hidden gems of unpublished imagery that never made it into the magazine itself given space or advertising limits. (and it would showcase some the editors and feature writers of the past)

I would spend hours looking through car mags as a young man. Car Craft , Hot Rod , Popular Hot Rodding and Muscle Car Review were my favorites. Although I did not have a sub to Street Rodder I would pick one up at the local grocery store quite often and Car Toons when I could find one. Glad to see that those type of things are being preserved for the future.

Another interesting peak at the Petersen back stage. Laura did a wonderful job presenting. I can’t wait to visit the collection again! To the producers: please stop putting music under the presenter. It’s distracting and unnecessary.

The cold temperature helps preserve the old nitrocellulose film stock

I’m surprised you guys keep that all stored in your own Mueseum I thought most of that type of materials were stored in Salt Mine Vaults that offered the correct tempertures and humity naturally which your method must be expensive to maintain and function ?
