This is the Executioner wasp! They have the most painful sting in the insect world, but they really aren't very aggressive. In fact, they will give you plenty of warnings before actually stinging and prefer to fly away.

@@damon20rthey’re not particularly aggressive either, but they are *territorial* during peak season. A lot of the trick is to not swat at them or panic/run. Stay away from their nests if you locate one, and hold still if they just hover up to check you out. For the most part they just treat you like part of the scenery if they aren’t provoked. I literally work in pest control and I collect wasps as a hobby and the only thing I’ve ever been stung by is a honeybee.

We sat on a bench in Saint John on a hiking trail at the top of a sweltering hike.... "bee", "another bee", "another bee", "oh crap move!" They didn't give chase or sting but had chosen the worst place to set up home. We also sat right under a nest on a tree on the beach without realizing until we left and almost walked into the nest ... To say they are not aggressive is an understatement. European paper wasps will buzz you for being within six feet of their nest. These guys are like oh hey just letting you know we're here.

@@avocado3-in-182 Yellowjackets are also chill, they have one of the smallest areas of aggression around their hives (roughly 5ft), they just unfortunately love to make their hives directly around high traffic human areas. If honeybees built hives in the same areas as yellowjackets, people would hate them a lot more, because their area of aggression is more around 20-30ft. I'm from Mexico. In the place where I live these wasps are known as "ahorcadoras" (strangler wasps), because it is said that their sting can cause difficulty breathing, and if you get stung by one of these, you must quickly go to a hospital to receive an "antidote" so you don't "choke to death". But I think that all of that is just an exageration and it's just caused by an allergic reaction on those who are allergic to wasp venom, so it doesn't occur on all cases. But what is true is that it's sting is, indeed, VERY painful.
