jockadoobee season 6 renewal is a very real possibility since ABC has nothing else to dump on Friday. Season 6 being a final makes me sad because I feel like the show can go on for a lot longer. The writing continues to be very creative and ambitious, and we're so close to the Disney streaming service at least they would support it!!

That's why I hated the show. I didn't come to watch a bunch of spies talk about their feelings with mediocre special effects.

TheDoomer What did you expect? Without the emotional element, how is anyone going to have emotional attachment or care about any of the characters? What you gave was an oversimplification of what the show is.

Netflix seems to do an ok job with the emotional stuff while being a focused and compelling narrative with excellent action. As I understand it Daredevil, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones have smaller budgets but produce far better results. Agent's of SHIELD's grasp was beyond it's reach. Instead of giving us a solid espionage with sprinklings of the fantastic they went straight to being Jr. Avengers. on a tv budget. As to needing an emotional element while not using melodrama/soap opera/Scooby gang stuff as a crutch. Daredevil, Narcos, The Wire (Hell anything David Simon touches) does it just fine without the cheese, movies like Zero Dark Thirty, Sicario, even early Daniel Craig Bond films did it just fine without the Scooby gang cheese. I'll use the Wire as a good example of having emotional depth with characters doing their job with intricate storytelling, politics, intrigue and relationships dynamics. The main character McNulty in the Wire is a cop who's good at his job, is complicated, has complicated relationships with his fellow officers and the street gangs he interacts with. There's no cheap Wedding episodes, no lame jokes, instead Simon employs dry humor and unexpected laughs punctuated with serious plotting. McNulty is a 'Everyman' that has to deal with both the bureaucracy of the city and the street codes of the gangs. You get a intricate and engaging story and it's just about cops chasing drug dealers. AOS has espionage, political intrigue, corrupt nations, weapons dealers, rogue agents and freaking it's set in the backdrop of the Marvel Universe! and the best they can muster is Fitz wanting a monkey and sandwiches, hack attempts at intrigue and overreliance on a monster/fantasy tech of the week plots. AOS was weak sauce from the jump. They could've been more if they kept it small, kept it smart, kept it concise and for gods sake didn't keep using the same backlots or Cali locations over and over again. All that money spent on a crappy looking Dethlock, or half assed Kree could've been spent on filming on locations that gave it a globetrotting feel.

Also I want to be clear, I appreciate the effort of everyone involved in making AOS, but they just went in the wrong direction from the beginning. They should've kept it a spy show with sprinkles of the weird.

the budget of netflix shows might be, by now, far larger than AoS. AoS received a large cut for season5. Plus your ideas about what the show should do to keep you engaged prevent you from actually enjoying what you're being offered.

Arguably he stands out more, as the everyman, the idealistic person who still has hope and still has a leadership role.

It didn't read to me that way. The show leaned waaay to far into the fantastic and superheroic. It should've used the advantage that it had in being within the spy genre. Focus on smaller threats compared to what the Avengers deal with. (A lost nuke here, political intrigue there...etc.) They went too big. I'd rather a concise season dealing with a more grounded threat than "Oh Inhumans are a thing, or hey let's go to space!" leave that to the Star lords and Ironmans of the world. If the show from the beginning focused on Coulson being a agent that dabbles in the strange and weird on occasion (Fox Mulder as an example.) but kept the tone and rhythms of the show grounded, it would've A) been able to use it's budget more effectively and B) when something happens in the show that was beyond the norm it would be that much more fantastic. Instead every episode looked cheap and every location was a California back lot and every powered character or sci-fi element looked mediocre.

TheDoomer what episode are you talking about where the effects or location looked mediocre? I'm guessing you are still in season 1. As for your concern, the extinction level event chose the Agents of SHIELD to handle it not the Avengers. They are the ones that have to fix it, because guess what - the Avengers can't.

Every single episode looked cheap and if you've ever spent a moment in Cali you'd see how they reused backdrops over and over again. No the writers chose to go over the top and jump 10 sharks. I'm not looking at this from a in story perspective. This is a problem with the production from the start. Watched every season.
