We spoke to Professors Stephen Harridge and Norman Lazarus about a study that looks to gain greater understanding of the effects of exercise on ageing.
Professor Harridge, who is leading the study, talks about the four different groups of people they are comparing, and how they believe that 'healthspan', or good quality of life, in later years is linked to physical activity.
Professor Norman Lazarus is a co-investigator as well as a participant in the study. At 87 years old, he falls into the master cyclist category. He explains why he took up exercise and the benefits it has provided him throughout his life.

I'm 66 and still riding my bike about 4,000 miles a year. I plan to increase that when I'm no longer working full time. I also lift weights and hike in the mountains here in Colorado. Beyond the physical benefits should be added the mood enhancement benefits, too. I have suffered from depression all my life, and vigorous exercise is the only thing I have found that is truly efficacious in keeping the demons at bay.

I’ve never exercised because it is good for my health (although that is a welcome side effect)….I engage in my various forms of exercise because it is fun! THAT is the key to sticking with an exercise program…there are hundreds of ways to stay active; find one or two (or ten!) that you enjoy and get on with it!

Pretty much the same here, I'm only 80 but I'm having women troubles, the lady in question was French, died at the age of 119 and was still riding her bicycle at the age of 100. (and I put her longevity down to her bicycle?) In consequence the licence I thought I had to sell my bike at age 80 has gone out the window (I used to do a lot of cycling as a youngster: perhaps 30 hours over the two-day weekend) and was still doing my 50 pullups a workout at age 70. ;) in common with Prof' Norman Lazarus I have no bugs diabetes, stroke, heart attack, or anything like that. ggood luck to all cyclists :)

Quite right, it would be better named the national illness service. A good start would be to ban stationary cars within a mile of schools at the start and end of the school day.

I'm 71. I started cycling a lot at 15, 56 years ago. Also did a lot of fell-running and walking. Still doing the cycling and walking. Vegetarian for 32 years, little alcohol. No prescription drugs ever, no major or minor health issues. The professors are correct. exercise makes a huge difference. I reckon the NHS budget could be halved if everyone exercised more and had better diet.

I'm 82 but I don't cycle. Weather permitting (heavy downpours stop me) I walk every day as well as exercise at home. My walks are limited to about 5 or 6 km at the moment because I'm waiting for a new knee. After 6 km, I'm really hobbling. During the day there's always something needing to be done in this old house. If I sit for any length of time ( doing this, for instance), I feel myself getting tired. If I now stand up and move around, I will become suddenly energised. I reckon it's all in the legs. In addition, I'm stubborn and refuse to get old. A few quotes that I try to follow: When you cease to struggle, you cease to live. Thomas Carlysle. It doesn't matter how slow you walk, so long as you don't stop. Cunfucious. Change what you can't live with, but live with what you can't change. Coffee mug.

74, been a cyclist all my life. Last doctor's checkup was in 1972 when I got married. No health problems at all whatsoever and I'm planning on getting another bike from my 80th birthday to add to the ones I already have. I also exercise with weights and I learned how to exercise from Ben and Joe Weider. I also eat a very healthy diet.

I am seventy now and started cycling again at sixty after a long absence. I have three senior friends who cycle as well. We all are healthy and fit. One plays hockey three times a week and the other two are long distance cyclists. So glad I took up cycling again.

Started mountain biking at 56 came in second recently in a race . Last race in late october was doing well and had a bad crash at the end of the race . Multiple ribs broken . Got a pulmonary embolism and fluid surounding the lungs a couple months later . Spent a couple days in hospital came out with blood thinnere . Back on the bike a month and a half later at a much reduced rate . Its interesting exercise almost took me out early but then again with family history not so good in my family it probably kept me going . What a strange conundrum

I'm also 87, cycle 16 miles a day, spend an hour a day at the gym lifting weights, and an hour hike or 18 holes of golf, depending on the weather. Same weight as my high school days. Just always had an exercise life style. Outlived two wives, which I am sorry to say.

Fitness in general is good for the mind and body. I am fortunate to live in a rural area without too many cars on the roads, yet we have a good group of cyclists who ride together regularly. This helps ward off another issue of aging, loneliness.

Agree, 78 going on 79 in March, been cycling passionately from the mid 80's, I average over 250 miles a month at this time in my life but weather dictates. I walk/jog daily and workout out with light weights, some stretching, sit-ups and band work also. My average weight while I worked was 160lbs at 5'9", my average weight since I retired is 135 lbs, I eat healthy, two meals a day between 6 am to 2 pm, I try not to snack or eat anything after 2pm. Sleep is very important also and the main reason I eat early. I usually fall asleep 9-9:30 pm and wake by 5:30 am. I have a like minded girlfriend going on 27 years that has helped us maintain our good health. Never too late to change your daily routine to start exercising and eating healthy.

Couldn't agree more! For the past nine years I have been riding to work throughout the year and have had very few illnesses. Trouble is, both my machines have been out of action for the past 2 months, and I miss it. I also know that when I DO start riding again, my body is REALLY going to remind me that I am 61 and not 16 any more !

Nice, I retired at 63, now 69. On the 16 December 2023 I had a huge aha moment, found I had lost my strength, not happy about this. The next day I started the 100 push ups challenge and ordered some weights, when the weights came I was doing 20 push ups 5 times a day, when I started I could only do 12. Now my job is exercise and weight training. In this short time I have lost 6kg (13,2lbs) and feel a lot better, the photos show a difference, but I feel as if I still look horrible. I am a skinny fat with love handles and a belly that will take another 6 to 9 months to get rid off.

Keep going! At 68 I was diagnosed with Parkinson's. I weighed 92Kg (mainly fat) and was unfit. In an effort to slow the progression of my disease I started resistance training and walking. Now, just three years later, I weigh 75Kg (not much fat), can do 15 dips with 25Kg of added weight in a backpack, can do 40 push-ups without rest, 10 chin-ups and I walk about 100Km per week. I am stronger, fitter and healthier (PD notwithstanding) than I have ever been in my entire life. The progression of my PD has slowed significantly and, from some perspectives, I've actually enjoyed a reduction in symptoms. Exercise is a fantastic way to help the body cope with age and the many challenges we face as we get older.

I am Bipolar 2 and also suffer from anxiety disorder. The meds I take ( and there is trial and error as well as aging , weight etc. in getting this right for yourself through self monitoring and medical consultation) offer me a good degree of stability against depression , addiction etc. But only exercise can make me feel good and keep me physically well. Exercise is frontline stuff .

What keeps being repeated a lot is the idea of a person "starting" cycling. Or with this old guy he says, "stumbled on cycling as an exercise". Isn't that nearly universally restarting or returning to? I mean, who didn't ride bikes when they were children? Only the very deprived or weak I'd estimate.

87 and looking like that on your bike? That's awesome. However, your bike's cranks are too long. From the look of it, they are quite a bit long for your body and current situation. Get a good professional bike fitting, and try some shorter cranks. You will be amazed.

Grandpa should get a bike with larger frame.
@stephensaines7100
@stephensaines7100 10 ай бұрын
Perhaps. But 'optimal' frame size depends on more than just what works for the fittest. As you age that late in life, *mounting the bike* becomes a prohibitive factor in determining the saddle height (and/or forward position) that renders the legs able to do a fully extended stroke. What you are commenting on is his right leg extending sideways. I noted that too. To presume that is down to incorrect frame size is open to many other questions and factors.

" Grandpa should get a bike with larger frame." The opposite of that is usually true. As we age we lose some flexibility. Long reach is only for the tour de France racers! Which we cannot be as we age. But certainly what he is doing at his age is amazing. We can hope you and I make it to his age and do as well as he does.
