Makes sense to me that these super low density things where friction is going to be a significant will have their spin stripped much quicker than something with more inertial capacity. You can definitely see it with the first soccer balloon.

cool video fellas, just a bit of physics info: the speed that the object eventually reaches is proportional to its mass and inversely proportional to its section area. So the fastest of objects would be something like a golf ball which has a high weight (mass to be more exact) and a small section area. Enjoyed the video gents. Thumbs up from me and Cheers from HH.

My buddy and I threw a Superball off the Los Alamos Canyon bridge back in the 1960s. It was a 300 ft., plus drop to a paved road below. The return bounce seemed about 2/3 rds of the original distance, but it skewed off the the side after that and caromed off the rock walls of the canyon.

Their anchored with ropes and harnesses, but they’re facing away from the cliff; the helmets are in case they slip because their heads will tend to go backwards into the rock face as the ropes catch them. Not to mention the possibility of a stone being dislodged on top of them during a rescue. When it comes to working at heights every little really can help.

@@I_drink_shoes I was a rock climber and did rope access training for working at heights in places like event halls, stadiums etc. To me it was clear as day what they were doing, but I have that background; I spent most of my working life around people doing that shit or doing it myself. Hell most lunches were spent swapping horror stories from "the day I nearly hit the deck from X (where X is an unsurvivable height) I figured that you like most people didn't have that background so I was happy to explain why they were doing it the way they did. Honestly climbing helmets always look goofy, but they do definitely have their place, on your head, instead of a sharp rock...I've learned that lesson the hard way. ;-)

To everyone complaining about "littering", the Drakenberg mountains is a world heritage site and they were clearly guided on their tour, they would have been fined HEAVILY had they did not cleaned up afterwards. Also, they obviously would've needed to receive permission to do this in the first place, meaning that their behaviour would've been properly policed throughout.

the magnus effect scales exponentially with velocity. if a ball does not have the mass to overcome air resistance it will have too low of a terminal velocity.

The football should have been rotated around it's symmetric axis so it is not changing shape while rotating. Rotating it end to end is sure to reduce its rotation as it falls. I think the ball works well because it maintains the same shape no matter how you rotate it, but it can be untrue for a football depending on the axis.

After some 50 meters I think a ball stops its spinning. So the final behaviour is not the Magnus effect but a simple wind effect

What the rangefinder will tell you is, I think, the Hypotenuse of the imaginary distance between the base of the high place you throw from and the vertical (h) elevation above the floor where the ball ends up... it's a kind of photographer's stat. But it's not the only way to measure distance.

Kickball would have been awesome. Heavy rubber ball that gets tons of air when kicked or thrown. We always filled them with nitrogen in school so they lifted more. They also hurt when they hit you in the face. 🤣

The Magnus effect is a particular manifestation of Bernoulli's theorem: . In the case of a ball spinning through the air, the turning ball drags some of the air around with it. In case you didnt know what the magnus effect was because thy did not explain it in this video
