Physical activity has been absolutely critical for me. In the depths of every episode I've had, I was sedentary, sitting in front of my computer basically all day. These days I get 12k plus steps a day, except for the last couple days when I've been down with a bad cold.

Exercise is great, no doubt. But it is one piece of a complicated puzzle for depression and anxiety sufferers. Just keep at it and don't ever give up on yourself to get better. Its been a roller coaster for me. I was officially diagnosed many years ago and I've been working at healing since. Don't stop believing. It sound like a silly cliche but it's true. Keep reading, keep searching and don't stop believing in yourself.

I’ve suffered depression for over a decade after I finally asked for help, I was already biking 24km a day and exercise didn’t fix the depression, it only helped me to cope with it. When I was sent to the therapist, she said “...you just need to exercise more”. It took me another 10 years to ask for help again, it was demoralizing not to be taken serious.

@@MsKen420 It was for a full year, then I started running, then I went to the gym, it's been years... 3 weeks after taking antidepressants made a huge difference that never happened with the basic advisable things that I followed by the book, eating healthy, exercising, sleeping wel (which is difficult) but the point here is that the psychologist neglected to put me through a psychiatrist to make a good diagnose.

It is so hard for me too. I got to learn how to stick with it and make myself feel better. I am always putting myself down, hurting myself, surround myself with toxic people....I need to start treating myself like a queen and treat my depression with this than to try and please toxic people and get poisoned.

I know exercise has helped me feel great about myself and in control... However the biggest problem I have is sticking to it, I start like a switch doing it almost perfectly but every time something happens like getting ill and then I stop for while and it it's even harder to come back to it again. Maybe Its motivation but I really want to be able to stick to things :(

doug your a nice guy and helpful, but a bit elitest. Montery nice walk of course. Tells about inner city Chicago, depression and walking or exercising. You are in Portland and have a great area for nature and a great support. Living in the city, lonely and no nature is very tough.

I agree. But you can still go to a gym or do jumping jacks. I lived in a poor part of Chicago and was homeless in Berkeley and San Diego, so compared to my wealthy friends on the East Coast where I grew up, I have not had an easy life.

Excuses, you can do a workout in the comfort of your own living room. Don't call someone an elitist for helping people free of charge on the internet.
