This is a must have if you build your own exhaust systems using mandrel bends, or even a handy tool for repairing exhaust systems. I wish I would have came up with this LONG ago!!
Check this out. Vevor already makes this with an air over hydraulic pump. s.vevor.com/bfP8y7
Here's the 2 tools needed to make this. No modifications to either tool required.

If you want to use the HF style tool but not have it the full length of the spreader down the tube you can cut a short piece of tubing as a sacrificial piece and use it to cover the rest of the die sitting outside of the pipe you are expanding . This will keep consistent pressure over the length of the HF spreader and allow you to only expand a shorter section of the pipe you need opened up.
@DeathTollRacing
@DeathTollRacing 3 жыл бұрын
I tried that and it was still the problem of the threads not being strong enough to do it. Or maybe your talking 1” in the tube and 1” sacrificial piece on the opposite side and empty dies in the center? 🤔. I’d try it, but I already ruined my hf one.

I tried heating it before years ago to try and help the expander. One problem is it melts the rubber rings on the expander, so when you take it apart all the pieces fall everywhere. It did help though, but that was my final attempt with one of them for years until now. But this works so well, it would be tough to beat with anything. Lisle will probably see it and start producing it. It would sell for sure. I would have bought it.

That’s a good idea. May have to tune them a bit so they don’t hit in the center when they meet each other. Or maybe not. That will be interesting to see if it’s more powerful. One thought I have is that it will follow the path of least resistance and all the expanding will be done on the new bored out piece since the pipe on that side will be the easier side to stretch leaving you with more of a bell. But you never know!

I agree. It's really hard to get a break through video, especially in automotive. I have not had one even go remotely viral yet, but I'm hanging in there for the most part. I also have had a lot of screw it moments, where I just about delete the channel. I really don't have a solid idea on why I'm struggling so bad for viewers. I've been told numerous times to stop doing the "how to" video's and just start doing complete build video's only. So I tried that when I restored a 2014 Ram 5500 4x4 Rollback tow truck, and the videos fell flat on their face even though I think it's one of my best series (2 vids for complete build, and 2 break outs). There's still hope they will catch on, but I believe it's slim at this point.

@@DeathTollRacing Hey DTR, what size expander did you use to make this tool? There is a 1.5 to 2.5 and then a 2.5 to 3.5 inch. I'm thinking the smaller one would be most versatile for me as long as it will really do 2.5.
@DeathTollRacing

@@PNW_Car_Mods there’s a link to the kit I used in the description that does all of the above in one kit. It’s the easiest way. As far as the 2 dies you mentioned, one thing to consider is that at the max of the range the expansion part tends to look more 8 bit round than actually round if that makes sense. With the lisle kit in the description it has a wide range of dies so you can usually stay at the bottom of the range.

I'm not sure if the hydraulic expander wasn't available when this video was made- I have seen where people mentioned buying the torque-style expanders and the hydraulic punch press to put them together and make this tool, but as of now it's more expensive to go that route over just buying the actual hydraulic pipe expander kit. Nice video and nice "hack". I've not laid hands on either tool so please forgive me as I share what I think is an idea: I think that if you adjusted the expanding "nut" that you could limit the amount of effective (expanding) travel of the ram. That is: if the expanding "nut" were farther from the piston body that the piston would have to travel further before the nut contacted and swelled the expander. With careful control of the hydraulic fluid valve (release) on the pump to not allow the ram to fully extend, you could eliminate the take-up in expanding the next pipe. This would allow you to set consistent expansion from piece to piece. Maybe. FWIW. YMMV. Thanks again for the video.

They make nothing in a segmented swedger to expand a 1 1/8 tube because the mandrel would be too small to take the force without breaking. The only way to expand that small is with a dedicated size ram in expander where the tube is held by a split collet. I can expand from 1" up to 5"and don't go smaller only because I've had no call. The 1" tube is used for exhaust on the Webasto style gas and diesel heaters for vehicles.

Ok so the biggest misconception about the first exhaust expander, its only meant for fixing out of round pipe. Thats its, no stretching the tube no real expanding just straightening out, out of round pipe. So many ppl misunderstands how to trully use the the first expander shown. It shouldnt been called an expander when it was first developed cause it doesnt expand anything.

Yes, I believe that was the intent of it also. But unfortunately it's marked differently. From HFT website: "This heavy duty exhaust pipe expander quickly and easily flares and expands thin wall pipe. Simply place the expander in the barrel of a pipe and turn with a wrench. The expander applies firm, consistent pressure evenly against pipe walls to prevent distortion".

That's crazy. They didn't have it when I first made this. I looked high and low for it. I'm going to add the links, but I think it's still cheaper to buy the lisle kit and the HF kit since you don't have to modify either, and then you can use it both ways and also have a knockout punch!

Not in that video I don’t think, I have a few times now on stainless though. I think on the crown Vic twin turbo build I did in the video.

is there some trick to using it with an impact? I got absolutely nowhere with it on 2.5 inch stainless (1.5mm wall thickness) just using an impact on it with the tube in a vise

You did not use it properly. Therefore it broke. Amazing tool. Worth the price. Clamp down your pipe. Use an actual torque wrench blah blah

😂 use a torque wrench on an expander? 😂 I needed that.
