The untold story of Algerians deported by France to the Pacific island in the 1870s and their descendants today.
Almost 150 years ago, after troops led by Sheikhs Al Mokrani and Al Haddad failed in their year-long resistence to French colonial rule in Algeria, France sent hundreds of Algerians to what was then a penal colony - the island of New Caledonia.
More than an estimated 2,000 Algerians who were considered “rebels” by the French were deported to the Pacific island in the last quarter of the 19th century. Journeying by sea - some dying after refusing to eat pork when their dates ran out - they were imprisoned in jails in New Caledonia.
The tragic irony, says Tayeb Aifa, a descendent of an Algerian deportee sent to New Caledonia, “Is that they used us to colonise this country while we ourselves were being colonised at home.”
According to Algerian anthropologist Mamoun Benmouhoub, the deportees were often influential figures within their tribes and their exile contributed to the unravelling of Algeria’s social fabric and splintered families who would never see their relatives again.
First colonised by France in 1853, New Caledonia today remains in French possession and about 10 percent of its 270,000 population is of Algerian origin. Three generations later, this exile has had a lasting legacy for the deportees’ descendants still living on the island.
Some feel a deep resentment about their ancestors’ exile and treatment on the voyage and during their subsequent imprisonment in the island’s prisons. When the inmates were released, they weren’t allowed to return home. Many descendants feel a strong affinity with what they consider their homeland and travelling to Algeria to discover their roots is considered an important rite of passage.
“We know where we come from,” says Bernard Salem, a descendant of an Algerian deportee. “We reclaim our Algerian identity, or Arab as they call it here. It’s always here inside us.”
All the original Algerian deportees were men and many ended up marrying the French women convicts who’d also been shipped to the island from mainland France. So, today the descendants of the Algerian deportees are of mixed race. Many are proud of their multi-ethnic, multi-cultural heritage yet feel unequivocally Algerian.
“Do you know how they survived?” asks Halima Jean, another descendant. “Solidarity.” It is this connection between exiles that many say allowed their ancestors to preserve traditions such as giving their children Arab names, getting involved in equestrian sports, the Arabic language, and their Islamic faith. Very often, their sense of identity goes beyond ancestry and many descendants try to obtain Algerian citizenship.
Filmed in Algeria and in New Caledonia, this is a story about a deportation and its legacy that delves into the fascinating history of a strong anti-colonial resistance movement that was ultimately crushed; and looks at how the descendants of the Algerian deportees have been able to uphold their identity and traditions a century-and-a-half later.
An independence referendum will be held in New Caledonia on 4 November 2018. Voters will be given the choice of remaining part of France or becoming an independent country. The government and authorities in Metropolitan France have stated that they will recognise and abide by the results of the referendum. If the motion fails, New Caledonians will have opportunities to vote again in 2020 and 2022 if one third of the local assembly members agree to allow those votes to be held.

Quite heartbreaking to watch how much patriotism and love for Algeria is deeply rooted in the offsprings of the deportees. I haven’t considered the blessing I have until I watched this video. I pray for all Algerians there that their hearts shall never see pain again. I would also love for our sisters and brothers there to know that they will always have a home here in Algeria 💗.

I couldn't help but be amazed how the turn of events in the Muslim lives always have a good ending. The mujahideen in Algeria 150 years ago during their revolts against the French colony, if not killed were exiled to the remote island in Caledonia to curtail their influence on their people. The mujahideen who were defeated were sent to indescribable inhumane conditions to be separated from their families forever. Subhanallah, how Allah strengthened them and protected them. Most of them survived in solidarity, married French women and 3 generations later, their descendants are still Muslims, living the legacy and Islamic principles they taught to their children and grand children. I want to be a part of this close Muslim community of minorities who fought to erect a Masjid and thrive to live as Muslims --- A MUST WATCH for every Muslim to learn from their history!

Amazing, amazing people maasha Allah It's incredible that they've retained so much of their culture and I hope they get the assistance they need in order to learn more. Such an emotional documentary. I've never seen anyone this attached to their ancestral land. My mother speaks of her homeland and how beautiful it was when she was growing up and how she had to leave during a civil war. When I was younger, I didn't understand her sentiment and how she could expect me to be attached to it even tough I'd never been there. As I grow older, I understand, and it fills my heart with sadness that I can never know or experience the love my mother has for her country in the same way.

Why so much overacting? They're having a good life there. Algeria is not a very comfortable country to live in. Majority of Algerians would leave Algeria and settle in Europe if they get a chance. And these people who already have a European nationality don't respect it.
@paulinitasalas5669

They stile their chance, that's the problem. If they choose to stay in Argelia or leave that's a choice and French people stole it from them, and if you keep watching you will see at minute 20 that they stole their freedom to practice their religion too. And for sure growing up watching your father or grandfather feeling heartbroken for not having a chance to go back to his hometown must be sad too. About what they will or won't do "if" that's something we can't talk about because they stile their chance to choose. So be quiet and respect the pain they are feeling.

@@pranavtiwari6772 I'm not your bro and I'm sorry about Indian people who suffered all of that. Not every Algerian wants to live outside Algeria just as not everyone wants to live where they are currently living. The fact that you think people must settle because in your opinion one country is better than other... That's just in your head, this is not a dictatorship of everyone thinking just like you. That's great about opinions: everyone can have their own.

so, at about 10:00 minutes in he's describing France's own version of '40 Acres and a Mule.' ..then, the Algerians could do whatever they wanted??..really??..why is it that some so called 'men' feel the need to conquer others? people, in their own land minding their own business and outsiders, rather than humbly visiting with respect, decide to take them and their land over - and then, in the sickest, worst ways, punish those who what??.. rebel??..and it's still happening all around the world in both old/and recycled as well as in 'new' and twisted, frakked up, invented ways..the fashion in which we treat this planet and other human beings?: we have *no* business trying to get back to the moon, let alone aiming to send people to study and colonize Mars.

Colonization was brutal no doubt but arab nations colonized or not never seem to find happiness nor peace. it is always pain, tears and conflict. it's time to get over it and take responsibility. most indigenous people from latin america can only dream of the life style you fellows have today in that country. i am from mexico mixed race same as yourselfs. the french came here aswell

+02Nawal they are Arabs and Muslims by choice .... and this choice no one can take it away from them ...only free people can understand that . your identity is what you choose to be not what others choose for you ... anyway they are blessed just to know that their ancestors where warriors and rebels and could survive such harsh inhuman conditions ...not like some people they melt like butter at the first hurdle .

Not one single interview with a local Kanak native leader on his opinion of these very well off Forced Arab settlers who ironically are much better off than the average Algerian! I'm guessing the locals would have nothing positive to say about another tribe of whites getting rich off their land and cheap labour because of unjust French colonial rule in "New Caledonia" imagine foreigners in your own land voting Against the will of the native ppl just to keep being rich etc, The slap in the face heard around the world. I'm thinking that only regrets they have is that the French didn't bring more of them.

The French colonial period is one of the worst all European colonial empires. The biggest crime is de genocide in the begin 1960’s in Algeria! But, what goes around, comes around.
