Jackson is actually right about the cars rolling downhill. Source: I have a physics degree. Explanation: If we were talking about blocks sliding down a slope with no friction, Peter would be right. They would have the same acceleration (a = F/m) because the force (gravity) is proportional to the mass. You can also think in terms of energy conservation. The initial energy is mgh, and the final energy is 1/2mv^2, so the mass cancels out and the speed is always equal. However, cars have wheels, and that turns out to be really important in this problem. Some of the energy that the cars started with will go into spinning the wheels instead of moving the car forward. This amount of energy is the same for both cars at a given speed, assuming the wheels are identical. Since the heavier car starts with more energy (mgh is bigger), the energy taken to spin the wheels is a smaller fraction of its total energy. So the ratio of its translational kinetic energy to its mass is higher, and it moves faster. Air resistance plays no role as long as the cars are the same shape and size. I think Mark Rober has a good video about this in regard to Pinewood Derby racing. I'll add that considering two cars racing on a flat surface with identical engines is a different matter, and in this case the heavier car would be slower. It would have a lower acceleration because it has more mass while the force from the engine is the same, and it would also have a lower top speed because of friction in the axels.

Ignoring friction and air resistance, two cars of different mass going down a slope would accelerate at the same rate. Despite the force of gravity(weight) W=mg being stronger on the heavier car (what Jordan says, and is correct about), the acceleration on the two cars would still be the same due to Newton’s second law F=ma (what Peter says, and is also correct about). The only factor on the acceleration of the car is hence the steepness of the slope as the mass of the car cancels out in the calculations. Also Jackson is the funniest underdog :)
@rmlgaming2091
@rmlgaming2091 3 жыл бұрын
The force of air resistance has a much larger effect on the deceleration of a smaller mass than a larger one because of F=ma. So the paper car would have a really small downhill terminal velocity compared to an aerodynamic heavy rock.
@starstriker4960
@starstriker4960 3 жыл бұрын
Not really, because if you put equal force on each car, the heavier one would go faster, this is because you need to calculate torque acceleration which would be greater on the heavier car. Your equation and conclusion is correct if the object was thrown or fell, as without air resistance they would be equal because mass does not effect speed in these equations.

From this and other sources I've seen, rolling downhill and air resistance makes this question more complex than a simple "all things fall at the same rate". Heavier objects/people will be pulled harder (cubed) than the increase in air resistance (square), and will thus go faster downhill. Peter may be making simplifying assumptions, but there's no way he gets to drag Jordan that hard when Jordan is actually right given real-world conditions. www.velonews.com/gear/technical-faq-weight-gravity-coasting-downhill/ www.quora.com/If-balls-of-different-weights-freefall-at-the-same-rate-why-then-does-a-heavier-ball-roll-down-a-hill-faster-than-a-lighter-ball

This is because the force exerted on an object due to gravity is directly proportional to its mass, but the acceleration of an object due to a force is directly proportional to 1/(mass). This cancels out, so all acceleration is the same.

From this and other sources I've seen, rolling downhill and air resistance makes this question more complex than a simple "all things fall at the same rate". Heavier objects/people will be pulled harder (cubed) than the increase in air resistance (square), and resist friction more because of their higher mass, and will thus go faster downhill. Peter may be making simplifying assumptions, but there's no way he gets to drag Jordan that hard when Jordan is actually right given real-world conditions. www.velonews.com/gear/technical-faq-weight-gravity-coasting-downhill/ www.quora.com/If-balls-of-different-weights-freefall-at-the-same-rate-why-then-does-a-heavier-ball-roll-down-a-hill-faster-than-a-lighter-ball

@Kirb when he said ignore wind resistance I think that just includes all types of friction, and presuming the cars were the same shape the friction on them would be the same, no matter what they are made of. Friction wouldn't make that much of a difference anyway though.

@@MrLacrosseification gallilao proved this in the 16th century and friction is proportional the the normal contact force Which is proportional to weight so no heavy objects dont resist friction better because they also generate more friction

@@chriscampion7545 OK, maybe heavier objects don't resist friction more. But the square-cube relationship between the increase in friction and the increase in downward force due to mass means that heavier objects roll downhill faster.

From an energy perspective, potential energy is mgh and it is entirely converted to kinetic energy 1/2mv^2. At top speed and the bottom of the hill, if the cars start at the same height, mass is cancelled. This is neglecting air resistance or friction. However, friction would be a lot higher on a heavier car, but the rolling resistance to start the cars tires rolling would be overcome quicker on the heavier car, so that may be a little more complicated than necessary. Sometimes it’s a bit counterintuitive, but with some simplifying assumptions, the physics equations help clarify things.

Actually Peter is right due to the laws of physics, having a bowling ball and a basketball and drop at the same time, will still make it so that both land and get to the ground at the same time, and also the heavier it is, the more force you will need to accelerate and makes the car have less acceleration but greater velocity, there is your physics

Most (upwards of 70%) iron and steel is recycled because its faster, cheaper, and more efficient. Virgin iron is still made, but usually used to supplement recycled materials. Heavier objects will typically reach a higher top speed than lighter objects, despite accelerating at the same rate. Heavier objects will continue to accelerate past the lighter object's terminal velocity. The size of the objects and the shape is important as it affects the air resistance

Going down a ramp is acceleration of gravity at a angle gsin(theta). F=mg and kinetic energy is (K)=Fd as well as 1/2mv^2 so (2mgd)/m square rooted is velocity. Mass cancels out. Also you need to calculate friction which slows heavier objects down faster by reducing their acceleration. SO THE HEAVIER THEY ARE THE SLOWER OR EQUAL THEY SLIDE DOWN A INCLINE. However a larger mass resulted in a larger momentum and larger force which is why is harder to stop them.

They are both kinda right. Becuase weight does help fight against drag to a certain point. So the heavier car would beat the lighter car downhill because it has more inertia. But in a perfect scenario with no drag they would be the same. It also depends on if the heavier car has the same wheels and their tire pressure. If the heavier vehicle presses the tires flatter there is more surface area so more drag. If the angle of the hill is small then this would greatly affect the outcome. If its something like 40 degrees then the effect would me minimal. Basically physics is complicated.

It all comes down to friction. If there's no friction or air resistance all objects will accelerate at the same rate, whether it is freefall or going down an angle. On the other hand you could have a heavy ass truck with rusted axles and a new carbon fibre bicicle, the lighter bike would win, But if you have the most aerodynamically shaped anvil going down an oiled slope vs a paper cube on the same slope, the anvil will go faster due to it's lesser air resistance. No air resistance or any friction and both will be the same speed. So Peter covering his ass with taking out air resistance kinda makes him right.

They accelerate at the same rate in ideal conditions. It is true that all objects fall at the same rate a=(-)9.8 m/s, but that only pertains to objects in free fall. The acceleration of the cars depends on many things like, the slope or friction in the car and on the surface. To calculate an acceleration on a slope in an IDEAL environment (no air resistance etc) you can use: ma= mgsin(x). (Cars mass)(cars acceleration)= (cars mass)(9.8)(sin(angle)). The m’s cancel on both sides because they are the same mass value (the cars weight doesn’t change) so you end up with: a=gsin(x). “x” is the angle of the slope in degrees relative to your chosen axis( usually horizontal), so the acceleration down a slope would be something like (-9.8)(sin(35)) which is 4.19. The important part is that the masses drop completely from the equation to result in the same acceleration. Example: Paper car weighs 0.1kg (0.1)(a)=(0.1)(-9.8)sin(35) a=4.19 Rock car weighs 100kg (100)(a)=(100)(-9.8)sin(35) “a” is still 4.19 You can also look at this through energy. When a object goes down a ramp potential energy gets completely turned into kinetic energy( in Peters described ideal state). The equation for this situation is mgh=1/2mv^2. (All variables are the same as the other equation above and v= velocity and h=height) As the car rolls down the ramp the potential energy (stored energy from the cars height off the level ground) is being changed into kinetic energy ( the cars speed). The height gets exchanged with speed as it rolls down the ramp. You’ll notice that the masses (m) also cancel in this equation as we are comparing the height of one car to the final speed of that same car. Same mass, it drops out. So the paper car that was 0.1kg and that started 2m up will have an equation that looks like this (0.1)(4.19)(2)=(1/2)(0.1)(v)^2 (Using “a” from above) V= 4.09m/s The paper car will be going at a rate of 4.09m/s The rock car that weighs 100kg will have this equation: (100)(4.19)(2)=(1/2)(100)(v)^2 V is also=4.09m/s The two respective cars have the the same proven acceleration and finishing velocity, which means that neither one would be faster.
