I just rewinded and relistened to this line about 5 times. 'Mistakes aren't a reflection of our self worth, they are merely choices that didn't pan out as intended. But manipulative and abusive people will make you think otherwise.' holy heck have I been needing to hear that. What an absolutely amazing video. Fantastic fan base for an incredible show! Regarding Amity's family name; typically, one gets it from the FATHER'S side of the family. But judging by the way Odalia behaved towards Alador destroying the Abomination Plant in Clouds on the Horizon. it sounds as though Blight Industries was HER idea. This would mean that Odalia is the actual blight, not Alador

It's and interesting take you said about Luz and The Collector. The Collector felt to me as a dark reflection of King than Luz, because on the surface he seems like everything that King wanted to be in the very beginning of the show: an all-powerful being; and how they are more related in the story, like Luz and Belos/Phillip. All-in-all, Great video, I really enjoyed it.

King and the Collector definitely share interesting character parallels! Since Luz is the show's main protagonist, I wanted to interrogate his function in the story from that perspective. Thanks for the comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

I feel like probably once we get back to them in S3 in the demon realm side, we’ll definitely see more parallels between them and King along with Luz I believe. As during this hiatus, I been thinking how I very much enjoy how The Owl House when adding another antagonist, having them also be the other side of Belos’ order and control and I guess a (while not logically possible) dark reflection of “What if Luz stayed the way she was in the first episode and never matured?”

I like the relationship twixt Luz and Amity partially because it depicts a same sex romance in relative isolation from homophobia, which gives the dynamic time to breath and be itself without the stigma, and it is portrayed as a perfectly healthy, normal romance, and that's good solid messaging.

There are only TWO instances where the "chosen one" trope actually appeals to me, the first is by far the most long-lasting and famous one; Arthur Pendragon pulling the sword from the stone. Some depictions claim this was ordained by Heaven, who viewed Arthur as the most pure among humans to become the chosen leader of Briton/England. Others say that it was because of his blood connection with Uther Pendragon that the miracle became possible. Either way, Arthur's achievement helped inspire many to join him and when there were others who didn't (namely those who STILL saw him as a squire) Arthur gave the blade willingly to one of the outraged lords and asked said lord to help knight him. This man COULD'VE double-crossed Arthur right then and there, use the sword to strike him dead on the spot. But somehow, either by God's will or his own conscience, the lord was merciful and granted Arthur his request; thus making the boy an equal. The second time I approve of the "Chosen One Trope" is from ABC's Once Upon A Time; where the lead hero, Emma Swan, is decreed to be the Savior who will help save magic. THIS is made possible because Emma is the product of a true, loving union between Snow White and Prince David (better known as Prince Charming.) Of course, Emma doesn't have all the skills to BE the Savior from the get-go...heck, she doesn't even BELIEVE she's that until the end of Season One. But once she realizes who she is, Emma's powers are eventually unlocked and she becomes one of Storybrooke's greatest hopes...besides that of Henry, her son. Sadly, movies and TV of late (with the exception of Owl House) have grossly been misusing the trope without actually understanding what it REALLY means. Thankfully, Eda helps Luz understand how to REALLY make her mark on the world; not by having "Fate" make it so but through her own actions. However...looking back on this episode, I'm STILL left wondering how a magical world like the Boiling Isles feels so "modern" despite looking like something out of the Middle Ages. I'm also left wondering why Eda was such a lousy mentor and barely did ANYTHING to teach Luz any skills

Fellow fan of Arthurian legend here -- you've done a fantastic job summarizing why that story is as compelling as it is. Despite knowing the mythology well, I keep buying and reading books about it because King Arthur has always piqued my imagination, too. As for Once Upon a Time, the first season is near and dear to my heart. The other six are...less so, but the show is another great example of the chosen one narrative done in a compelling and fresh way. Teaching doesn't appear to come naturally to Eda, but what's interesting is that she and Luz learn a lot from each other. That's part of what makes their bond so compelling.

morrowind has the best example of a chosen one. the nerevarine would end the reign of a set of pseudo-gods but has to be born on a specific day of the year, be immune to disease/age, reunite the tribes, wear a certain ring, and end the immortality of those pseudo-gods. the thing is, literally none of that is fundamental to a person outside of being born on a certain day and a whole lot of people born on that specific day of the year was sent before you to do the whole prophecy (you even talk to their ghosts!). everything else is something you have to make happen yourself on orders from an empire that wants to see the prophecy fulfilled properly solely for political reasons. sure you could choose to believe that the demon god of prophecies sent you, but it is just as (if not more) likely that you were just a guy in the wrong place at the wrong time and just did what you had to.

The name also evokes things like the “Lux Aeterna” part of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, the Roman deity Sol Invictus (the Unconquerable Sun whose Winter Solstice Feast marked one of the major origin points for Christmas), and Ein Sof Ur, the Unending Light of G*d that pervades the universe in Kabbalistic thinking.

I absolutely love the point you make starting at 22:33. Maintaining balance is what helps us grow the most, like Luz letting both fantasy and reality thrive in her life, so she can be the best possible version of herself. That is why I would argue there IS a healthy balance between ideals of both Existentialism and Predeterminism. It is great to go through life forming yourself through experience and becoming your own person, but it can be as equally great to believe there is a reason you are where you are right now, and that you can make the best of your life by being your own hero.

This was an exceptionally well thought out video on many of the characters. Although season 3 will be short, I suspect it'll the cherry on top of all the incredible stuff we've received in the show so far and we, the viewers will be left sad, happy, satisfied and yet longing for more. Such will be the fate of an incredible show like The Owl House which will forever be in both our hearts and memories.

@Jenny Cook Agreed, Season One of OUAT always stands as my personal favorite part of the series...but I STILL loved the others. I also agree that Luz and Eda DID help each other grow quite a bit; the latter even said that her life got so much better since they met. I just can't help but look back at how nonchalant Eda often acted, whenever Luz wanted to actually learn some spells. Sure, what she said about "listening to the Isles" back in Adventures in the Elements WAS a big help...but she actually made it seem like NOT going to school is the greatest choice a person could make. I'm thankful, though that she got over her pride and ultimately decided to enroll Luz at Hexside; after seeing just how poorly her "teaching methods" worked on Hooty
@JennyCook57
@JennyCook57 2 жыл бұрын
Underrated moment from Adventures in the Elements: Luz: "I can make light glyphs, but at the end of the day, that's the only spell I know." Eda: "And whose fault is that?" Luz: "Yours!" Eda: "Ha! Yep! Got me there."

i mean, at that point it was kinda like telling a child "yeah sure you can learn to fly" and then that kid going on to invent the airplane. like, there was no way for her to actually teach anything to a person without the unique anatomy of a witch, the glyphs she discovered were an entirely forgotten type of magic. although it is very much a good thing she enrolled her in school, for the social aspect if nothing else.

At the end of the video, that quote u said literally almost made me cry because I felt that it was wording about how Luz's life if. She went from a normal kid that nobody talked to in the human realm, to a brave and brilliant witch who learned magic and made friends and helped people. She couldn't do all of that in the human realm because she had no hope, but she gained hope from people like Eda, Amity, Willow, Gus, Hunter etc...…she learns that not everything relies on simple book about a witch and figures out that not everything can be done from a solo job.....she knows that she can't do everything alone and figured out that she needed help to go through with her trauma/suffering...…Luz is a good kid and with the friends that she has by her side....she knows that anything is possible....

I didn't connect the Collecter and Luz connection until this video and I'm so shook I missed it because this is my favorite show. That said, I adore this video and everything you had to say and to me it helps me make connections to another video that talks about Luz's identity and in particular her people pleasing tendencies. Luz doesn't give herself the space to properly understand her identity beyond the opinions of others and because so much of her efforts are dedicated to her helping others understand themselves (if inadvertently). Like you said, the show makes Luz question what "being a witch" actually means and notably we never get that answer. We will probably see her in these last three episodes begin to understand who she is/who she wants to be with her palisman hatching to represent that growth, probably appearing like a chimera of sorts to represent just how many multitudes she has within her. All this to say, I appreciate this video for making me think more about this show that I love and am excited to take the plunge into bingewatching your other videos.

strangely enough, I've found power & change thru the acceptance of no free will. I realized my choices & "failures" of the past were based on trusting those who raised me, not because I decided to be bad that day. It's kinda like how your coach will yell & throw chairs, but you just shrug it off as "whatever" because you WERE following his lead. This isn't to say change can't happen. In fact, I notice most change happens from distrusting established power & not trusting its validity. The weird part of giving up free will & realizing it's all dominoes or "turtles all the way down," I began to see thru said shame & rather, value my OWN values, giving up the result, rather than capitulating for survival. My parents don't have my best interests at heart, continue to deadname & misuse my pronouns because they've invested so much identity they don't want to lose. "no free will" deprives us of pride & shaming others, but I think acknowledging the reality of the chemistry behind the philosophy is important & the basis. Living w/out fear of the consequence is the goal, and if we always make a choice w/ our best interest at heart, we can never "make a mistake," so to speak. This has led to me being happier & more confident, able to move on from the unexpected much easier...my parents & ex would fly into a rage if anything was how they didn't plan (control freaks). Just a thought, would love to talk about it w/ ya sometime if you're up for it but i thought i'd share. Your content is great, adore owlhouse & was Raine for Halloween. Take care!!

With Thanks to Them, it seems Belos will remain the Main Antagonist of the series. I do wonder what he has planned now and what are his thoughts on the modern world, that has long since condemned his profession and considers witch hunting a dark part of human history (In most countries nowadays). The fact, he decides to go back might hint he doesn't like what he see's. And with the synopsis for the special For the Future. I can make a guess at his end goal. He's gonna attempt to possess the Collector, the same way he did Hunter and use his powers to wipe the Demon Realm out and then go back to Earth and make it like it use to be, the way he liked it.

Thinking about how “The Owl House” can be read as a Christianity metaphor wherein Belos represents a destructive and unsustainable form of faith rooted in fear and an obsession with being "worthy" of grace while Luz represents a faith based in love and acceptance which heals and restores and opens both herself and the people whose lives she touches up to wonderful things.

@@JennyCook57 Thanks. I also read it as a Jewish immigrant story about a child mistreated and persecuted and hurt in the Old Country who comes to a New Land looking for refuge and met other outcasts and weirdos and together they became a family/pack and built a sanctuary and the whole entire story is about them trying to protect that sanctuary from a walking symbol of the outside “normal” world’s cruelty towards the marginalised who wants to take it away from them and destroy it because he considers it “sinful” and “impure”.
