Here is some information about EXO that I hope will help answer most of your questions. EXO's concept and storyline is kind of complicated, so in order to understand what is happening in their MVs you need to understand their origin story. As you might have noticed, EXO is known for their vocals and for their dancing. As an SM Entertainment group its really no surprise that the members are all amazing singers and dancers because that's just a fact about the type of people that SM selects to be a part of its company. SM has become known for its amazing vocalists and dancers and that is why its one of the big 3 entertainment companies in Korea and around the world EXO currently has 9 members (originally 12) and all of them are amazing vocalists, however, 2 are considered the group's main/lead rappers (Chanyeol and Sehun), but there are several other members that are sub-rappers as well. If you follow SM Entertainment groups, you will soon discover that all of SM's rappers were actually chosen to become trainees for their vocal and/or dancing skills. All of SM's rappers learned to rap, or at least became good at it, after they joined the company. So not only are their rappers great rappers, but they are all amazing singers as well. SM is known for having some of the best vocalists and dancers in the industry and the members of EXO are proof of that. EXO's MVs are kind of like a movie -- its a movie that has been going on for the past 7 years and it has no sign of coming to an end any time soon. But at this point its going to be kind of hard for you to fully understand what is happening in the storyline of EXO's MVs, unless you really invest some time into getting to know EXO and their story. Because all of EXO's MVs and storylines from everything EXO has ever been involved in are connected and it all tells a little more of EXO's story. And not only that, but EXO aren't even human, so that throws an even more complicated concept into the mix. LOL But to help you begin to understand why we say its hard to explain things to you ... here is some information about EXO. To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept. So to really understand EXO you need to start from the very beginning and watch both the Koran version and the Mandarin Chinese version of their "Mama" MV. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The group's concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. EXO's concept is also connected to real life planetary and solar events so all of EXO's comebacks and new song releases for the main group of EXO are all connected to when eclipses and other planetary phenomenons take place. For example, their comeback for their "The War" album and "Power" album coincided with when we had a solar eclipse, etc. SM Entertainment, and its founder, Lee SooMan, has all of EXO's release dates and concepts planned out for years in advance, and it all has something to do with real celestial events that are predicted to take place. Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. However, since then 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and Luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015.) However, now, because they no longer have enough Chinese members they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin, they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members. In "Call Me Baby" you will see there are only 10 members.This was the first MV after 2 of their Chinese members left and this was the last MV were we see Tao, the third Chinese member that left the group. Tao (orange shoes) left the group shortly after this. Not only does EXO have amazing MVs, but its almost always double because anytime they have a Korean version they usually will have a Mandarin version, so it means they have to shoot two separate videos. You should also check out the EXO-M Mandarin Chinese version of "Call Me Baby." If you watch the two MVs side by side, you will see that the members that are featured in each part are different and even in the dances where you think "it's the same" there are different members doing different parts. Their MVs may be similar, but that's only because they filmed the MV twice and deliberately made the scenes look the same. Also if you really pay attention, the scenes may look the same, but the members who sing the parts are different depending on the version that you watch. In the Mandarin version you will see the EXO-M members featured more (Lay, Xiumin, Chen and Tao) and they sing the main parts, and in the Korean version the EXO-K members (D.O., Baekhyun, Chanyeol, Sehun, Suho and Kai) sing those same parts. The scenes may look the same, but the singers are different. In the Korean version a lot of the main parts where sung by D.O, but in the Mandarin version Lay is he one hat sings those parts. And in the Mandarin version the rap was done by Tao and Xiumin, where in the Korean version it's Chanyeol and Sehun, etc. Also, once you have seen "Mama" and start to understand EXO's backstory, if you watch any of their other MVs, such as their "Power" MV, it should make more sense to you if you keep in mind all the details about them being aliens with superpowers and how they are on a mission, etc. For example, we originally thought their "Power" MV was all about how the Red Forces stole EXO's powers and they had to fight the robot, which was under the Red Forces control, to get their powers back. And once they got their powers back they were then sent to Earth. However, now that we have their most recent MV for their song "Obsession'" we have a new piece of the story. Our new theory is that "Power" is about how X-EXO -- EXO's evil clones -- are being trained by the Red Force and they have been sent to Earth to infiltrate humanity and spread their evil agenda. So EXO's mission is to try and stop X-EXO. The one thing you have to keep in mind with all of EXO's MVs, and I really mean all of them -- including their sub-unit projects and even most of their solo projects. And because Baekhyun and Kai are involved, even SuperM's storyline -- is that they are all connected and they all tell a little more of EXO's story and why they are on Earth, etc. Unfortunately,, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L (EXO's fandom) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, choreography, concert VCRs and even live performances, and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances here is a list of the members and what their special power is. EXO-K 💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeo) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho) 💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light 🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix. 🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force ☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation. (Kai means door or gateway in Korean so his stage name symbolizes his role within EXO's storyline) 🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind EXO-M ❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost) 🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything. 🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity (As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group) The Chinese members who have now left the group: 🐉 Kris was the leader of EXO-M he was a main rapper and vocalist -- his power was the ability to fly and his spirit animal was a dragon 💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind) ⏰Tao (Z.Tao) was a lead rapper and vocalist and the martial artist of the group, so he did the flips and stunts in the group's routines. This is the only comeback that actually has 10 members. It was after Kris and Luhan left, but Tao had not yet left the group. EXO started as 12 members and now have 9, though only 6 are currently active.
