To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012 -- So "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV. It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the groups concept. From the very beginning EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with super powers to protect the Tree of Life. Each of the members has a super power that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one if not all of them using their powers. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The groups concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. Now you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. (So the story in the beginning is explaining the groups legend and why they are split into two groups and what they have been sent to Earth to do.) So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "MAMA," not just the K version, because even though both the K and M versions of "Mama" feature all 12 of the members, the K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the M version focuses on the M members and their powers. Plus, this is a good opportunity for you to hear what the song sounds like in both Mandarin and Korean. (I encourage you to watch EXO-M's version of "MAMA" even if you don't react to it and really listen to the introduction story at the beginning. Now that you know a little more about what it is trying to tell you, you will probably start to understand more of why EXO does the things they do and what makes them so special.) However, since then 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and Luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015.) However, now, because they no longer have enough Chinese members they no longer do separate promotions where the group is split up, but they still produce all their songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members. Their fandom name is EXO-L because L falls right between K and M and I like to think it stands for Love. 😍 In Korean MAMA is a term they use to address a leader or King or queen. Its a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family and especially the head of the royal family or leader "Mama." So in this song they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do? etc." To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs here is a list of the members and what their special power is. The members powers are: EXO-K Suho : water (Fun fact: did you know that Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO,? That's why as the leader of EXO, Kim Jun Myeo's stage name is Suho) Baekhyun : Light Chanyeol : fire D.O : earth (dirt) which gives him strength Kai : teleportation Sehun : Wind EXO-M Xiumin : snow/ice (frost) Lay : healing Chen : thunder/lightning/electricity (As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M) The Chinese members that are no longer part of the group: Kris: Flight (He was the leader of EXO-M when they used to promote as two separate groups.) Luhan: telekinesis (control things with his mind) Tao: Controlling time

SM Ent came up the name of the group EXO from a planet named EXOPLANET. So they used it as a concept. EXO members (OT12), came from EXOPLANET that means they are truly out of this world hahaha and has different powers. That backstory in MAMA MV explains their story. So that explains why EXO are the greatest, their talent is out of this world!

Exo used to be 12 members. Each of them have different superpowers. This song shows a bit of their powers. Exo-K is in korean, a unit made from 6 of the korean members. And Exo-M is in Chinese(Mandarin) plus the 2 other korean members. Well this unit is no longer a unit since 3 of the chinese members left the group. Kris wu, Luhan and Tao. These guys are from the planet called EXO. But yes, this is their debut song and they had this backstory. It involved each of the twelve members possessing an individual elemental superpower ranging from fire, water and wind to time-control and teleportation.The music video for "Mama" also became famous for an extensive narration explaining the concept using metaphors based around the "tree of life" with Exo-K and Exo-M being two sides of the same coin. And in this video they show their superpowers. The members' superpowers were seen in their music video for "Lucky One", showing the members using their powers to break out of a laboratory where they were being experimented on. They were seen again in the music video for their "super-hero inspired" single "Power", where you can see the story of how they got their superpowers. By fighting a big machine (in EXO planet?) and after destroying the machine, it released it´s powers and boys picked their own. And you can see superpowers used in music video called "Miracles in December" as well.

Honestly it’s so funny to see people watching these videos from like 2010 or so, now cause like Bris, you said the sets are insane and they go all out. Back when this first came out, and all through this era, we used to joke that SM never let their artist out of the rooms they made them always dance in 😂😂👌🏻
