I saw smoke like that coming from my alternator earlier and thinking of what I can do so that it will not quit on me again. I'm just running stock equipment but would like to be prepared.
@neoplasmax
@neoplasmax 4 жыл бұрын
@@SOBERSCUMBASSHEAD All electric motors such as those on a cooling fan on your radiator draw a lot of current to get moving.. Electric motors usually appear as a short until they start spinning.. A quality motor or one with a decent capacitor to start turning should be available because the standard fans are not very efficient.. Just do a clamp on it and have it turn on, you'll be surprised at the current draw to get them moving..
@neoplasmax
@neoplasmax 4 жыл бұрын
@@Paul-gz5dp One thing I'd think of if you saw smoke coming from alternator, check the back main connection from your battery.. Sometimes it will ground out on the frame of the alternator and eventually either blow the in-line slo-blow fuse or it will kill your battery or start a fire.. i've seen these go bad and even had one happen in my current vehicle where the alternator was changed and the boot was left off that covers that wire.. after a few bumps, I saw my dash lights flicker like it was losing power and it was.. it was shorted to ground and the wire was melting cause the last guy got the engine from had circumvented the inline fuses and was direct to battery.. If the smoke came from inside, there is not a lot inside a alternator, they are easy to rebuild and most the time, you talking about brushes or diodes gone bad.. High amperage draw like seen in this vehicle will kill the rectifier eventually..

That’s why I always test electrical systems with the scope with an amp clamp along with checking voltage. Current draw back to the battery should go down quickly after starting. Seen lots of alternators fail shortly after being replaced from weak batteries constantly drawing excessive current. As someone who does this for a living I’m kind of impressed to see you talking about this. Not many people know to look for things like this. Keep spreading the knowledge.
@GamingHelp
@GamingHelp Жыл бұрын
The other thing people will need to know, is that if you have a big audio setup and you're constantly drawing high current from the alternator, you're going to be learning how to yank alternators and put new brushes in em. :) In my case, until I finally just belted up a second alternator, I was rebrushing the main alternator every couple of years. So remember, if you want to go anywhere that having your vehicle quit on you might be kind of dangerous, think about the alternator. I once had an alternator fail on me two hours north of Red Earth, Alberta, way out in the bush on a lease road after driving a friend to a job site. It was -30C in the middle of winter, no cell phones (This was the mid 90's) and the only thing I could think of was to try and limp to Athabasca (I had close friends there that I could stay with). So, as soon as I seen the light come on, I got out and pulled every fuse I could except ignition and even pulled the plug off one of the headlights to cut the current draw in half. I even turned off the cabin blower heater and instead, set the intake to fresh and cracked one of the side windows to "pull" air in through the intake so we at least wouldn't freeze. We made it, but barely. That's like 25 years or more now, but I seem to recall it took us about three to four hours to make it to Athabasca. If I hadn't pulled fuses AND ran on a single headlight, we wouldn't have made it. The one remaining headlight was barely a candle glow by the time we rolled into Athabasca. Before we went in to get a bit of sleep at my friends place, I tried it to see if the starter would turn over. Not even a click. Athabasca is still two and a half hours from home too, so if we'd have pushed for home, we'd have been screwed. Ah, to be young again! :D

The alternator dosnt just charge your battery it powers everything in your car. Most people think the battery powers everything WRONG. The battery is only used to give the spark needed to start the engine once engine is started the serpentine belt moves around the alternator and keeps everything powered. If you turn the engine off then you are using battery power.

Great video - Another option is to use a high output (at idle) alternator, for example, Balmar XT-250 with an external regulator that acts like a battery charger. The MC-618 external regulator has charging profiles for different battery chemistries. A normal car alternator without external regulator will definitely have issues exactly as your video demonstrates. A Balmar XT-250 and MC-618 external regulator will provide over 100A at idle and charge the battery properly. I do need to mention I work at Balmar - Thanks!

One thing and the first thing you need to do to prevent any further damage from happening is to locate and map out the flow of water on your property. I can tell you right now from not seeing anything that if your ceiling is falling in and theres severe foundation damage that somewhere there is a ditch that is stopped up or maybe a channel to direct the water flow has eroded away and is causing water to migrate towards your housepad instead of away from it. the dirt under the house is become saturated and is suppose to be the dryest ...Driest...(however your spell it), part of your property. With a completely stock car and stock audio system, there is no need to put your car on an external charger. The stock alternator is designed to handle a 100% duty cycle on that configuration, so no.... you're not stressing it out by leaning solely on it. The only exception to this is if you have a bad battery or you're literally starting the car for extremely short trips with headlights, h/ac blowers, etc running, which don't allow the alt to fully top off the battery to replenish what the starter sucked out of it. My guess on why his alt is running wide open for so long is that he's continually sucking power out of the battery faster than the alt can return it. And also, he mentioned a lithium ion battery pack he had integrated with his agm auxilliaries and vented plate batt under the hood. If he's running the l/i without a tailored charge controller, then the lithium-ion is probably maxing out what the alternator's voltage regulator will allow because they can drink as hard as they deliver... much faster than the lead/acid based batteries which the car's regulator is designed for. If simply hooked in parallel with the others, it will even act as a buffer, both feeding the other batteries while sucking full-flow on the alternator. Now there's a chance he's got the li-ion isolated with its own controller, and simply, as I said before, not allowing the alt to catch up. But this is something you're just not likely to ever have to worry about with a fully stock configuration in your car.

Hey EXO, long time fan of yours. I just recently added a small 20Ah AGM battery and supercapacitor bank to my car (which has a solar setup on it). I've been curious about what my draw was in different situations and if I was getting close to the limit of my 130A alternator at any point, even before I added the extra power sources. I bought a clamp meter not even half an hour before seeing your video and I'm glad that I'm doing the proper checks. Your video highlights how easy it is to assume your alternator will be able to keep up fine, when it's actually being worked to death. I first saw the power draw issue mentioned when I looked up lithium iron phosphate batteries and it's scary how quickly things can go up in smoke if you're severely overloading your alternator at idle. Some newer alternators can change charging current based on temperatures, but most alternators people will come across don't have that protection. When it comes to adding extra stuff to your vehicle, you need to be extremely careful when it comes to power draw, your wiring, and what is supporting all of the components. If you make a mistake, it can end up with serious consequences such as breaking or severely shortening the life of components, fires/burnt wiring, dead battery in a remote area, etc. Please do your research and don't take shortcuts... shortcuts and lack of research WILL come back to bite you
@JSTheAnonymousOne
@JSTheAnonymousOne Жыл бұрын
Another thing, if your current alternator is "just enough" or you're exceeding the amp rating for it in a reasonable scenario, you really should get a higher amperage alternator. It might cost a lot more than a regular one, but it'll be cheaper and far safer for all in the long run

When I installed my sub I connected my quick connect trickle charger attachment so I can just plug my truck in my car port when I get home. Definitely makes a big difference when you always bump your subs because I drive mostly short distances around college.

Only in America.. No high output alternators, no problems. That's why we don't have that problem in Europe. We usually have only one basic alternator for huge +50kw system. No heat related issues with stock alternators :)

in Europe I also see alot of people run Winston's... where half the amount of US lithium runs as good as twice the amount of winston lithium. no space related issues, with HO alts. 😉 in US we run 20k+ systems straight off alts. 😂

Yes, you're right. Winston is only affordable lithium on market, same thing in Russia for example. Here's very few cars that even could run multiple alternators, average car has 1-2 liter engine because of emissions. Old car with v8 engine for example is very expensive to keep because of taxes and insurance, even if you don't drive it much :D

Yes, I have two stock 120A alternators for example. There might not be another person with double alternators in Finland. We usually change the biggest alternator available with same fitting, example in my situation: 1.2l stock alt 65A -> 1.6l stock alt with air conditioning 120A. And then we buy battery bank big enough to keep the voltage +12v to get the rated power from amplifiers :)

Good point, gel batteries lose voltage more rapidly than wet ones. Use a good and appropriate type of charger to maintain the longevity. I personally like welding cable for high amp applications. Best amp rating for gauge size. Keep the bass wind flowing

Most people Don’t realize an alternator will never charge a to full capacity no matter what size it is if you kill Your battery and jump start the car and only drive it and think your are going to fully charge the battery you are going to kill that battery faster than you can believe. Get it on a proper battery charger with 10-20% of your AH rating. So a 100 AH battery needs a minimum 10 amp charge to full to keep the battery in the nest condidtion.

I used a 350 watt sub in my car until my alternator and battery broke. My sub was a sealed 350 watt blaupunkt with 400 watt amp. My car stereo has a factory stock included 250 watt amp 6 channel system and 2 under seat 20 cm stock subs, 80 watt eatch. Normally they can reproduce 40 hz bass with 95db at 1 meter, car wont shake because freq is too high, to shake, it needs below 40 hz freq. That's why i call them woofers and not subwoofers. To reach 40 hz i use subsonic filter and a lot of active filters in my phone (2 equalizers and bass enchantment + tube woofer enchantment, etc.). It sounds amazingly good. Only bad part is i don't have freq below 40 hz and i don't have the shaking feeling :) To repair this i found out i don't need a large sub in trunk, i only need 1 small sub inside the car behind back seat. So i created a 4th order box with a sub of 80 watt rms that takes power from head unit and it sounds almost as a 200 watt rms sealed sub box. This 4th order box is amazing. This way i save my alternator and battery + i can listen to music for 5 hours without drying my battery to 0. With a setup of 1 sub, 2 woofers, 2 mid, 2 tweeters i get 105db at 1 meter sound. Anyone who says under seat woofers are bad they clearly haven't used filters to them to reach their potential :) basicly i put equalizers to +15db on 30hz and -15db to rest of freq's.... and still it wont hit 30 hz only 40hz, seems like they were designed to bypass that freq... I'm curious while my car already had a amp of 250 watt and i connected first time the blaupunkt amp of 400 watt it scaled to 650 watt consumption overall ?! i conected the B.P. amp to rear speaker wires and not to aux in head unit... how bad was this?

I have been doing this for years to the batteries in my Jeep and other 4x4's. No big stereo to run though, a 9500lb winch instead. It will pull a pile of amps in a hurry, an aux battery is a must.

Is it harder on the alternator, yes. However, it is designed to charge and maintain. If you.have dead batteries, absolutely... Charging them is a great idea. I think a bigger mass spread problem is overcharging, and proper voltage regulation with temp compensation. I see too many people with the voltage way past what's good for lead acid, but it's a trade-off for performance and fast charging. I've gone through many sets of batteries, and have learned the hard way. Proper voltage for longevity is key. Great video and great point you mention. Go feel an alternator under heavy load, it's too hot to touch! Abuse my alternators, to the point of making the gates green fleet runner belt squeel and have had excellent service from these mechmans so far.
