More than four decades ago, a Nebraska rancher stumbled onto the world's largest known pair of typical whitetail antlers known to man. And here’s the story
Throughout the early to mid 1900s, whitetail hunters and antler collectors frequently kept gigantic antlers and old, moth-eaten mounts in attics, basements and other dark of their home."As a result, many of these great racks would remain in obscurity for decades.
As stories of exceptional deer got out, a few pioneer antler collectors constantly chased down the rumors, driving all over the continent in search of great racks that had been lying in barns and closets for years. Such giants did exist, and through the efforts of these collectors, some the most iconic whitetails we know to today are from their endeavors.
That led Tim to the set of sheds that would become known as The General, the largest typical sheds of all time. Details of the transaction which caused those antlers to leave the farmhouse for the first time in 37 years are not known, but the gigantic buck would finally become known to serious whitetail nuts across the globe.
Now Let’s talk about the antlers:
The buck’s main beams are both over 32 inches and mass measurements are as high as 7-1/2. When mounted in a position that they look natural, they have an inside spread of nearly 24 inches. As it is, the buck scored 240 gross typical and nearly 219 net, more than five inches larger than the current Saskatchewan world record held by Milo Hanson. But the shrinking effects of a warm, dry Nebraska farmhouse have taken a large toll.
No one, of course, knows exactly how much, but many antler collectors have some estimates.
Antler collector Dick Idol said about the buck, “It’s hardly fair to compare such a rack to a recently harvested one kept indoors from the time of skinning for the short 60-day drying period and then officially measured for the record book.
Just in shrinkage alone, these Nebraska sheds could easily have lost as much as 6 to 8 inches in total measurement, especially in this type of rack, which still has 32-plus-inch main beams and a conservative inside spread of nearly 24 inches. Another 8 to 10 inches overall, which this buck conceivably lost, would have put him at 226 1/8 to 228 1/8 net, had the antlers been measured soon after being found back in 1959.”
Tim says he feels honored to have "discovered" the highest-scoring typical buck ever known to exist. And get this: The deer was wearing that set of antlers the year Tim was born. Was it fate?

The best part is there’s a chance the general survived that winter and possibly would’ve scored higher the following year, obviously depending on how old he was the year he shed.

@Wang Chung Weather & health affects the blueprint of a buck. I have a buck on my property that is 11 & has double drops on the middle of the beam on both sides that get heavier as they go down. I have known of Tim Condict for 20 years now. He is one of the good ones. He has great advice & will do what it takes to achieve the objective. Ask him about crabgrass sometime. Assuming he was younger he most likely would’ve grown more abnormal tines thus dropping his score due to deductions. assuming he was older, he would’ve either hovered where he was at, or begin his decline. I think this rack, is him at his prime, but at the end of the day who knows

This buck started the obsession for me. I was just a kid seen him in a magazine. At the time I didn't know deer could get this big. It started me down the road to seek out and kill 160+ inch deer in every state. He no longer is the biggest due to Hanson but by far he still is my favorite image.

I am fascinated by big whitetail racks. I have been rescuing them from obscurity for about a year now and have collected quite a few ranging from 160 to 224 inches being the highest officially scored. I just found a 164 inch offset shoulder mount that was acquired at an estate sale at a flea market.. it was literally mounted less than a year before by what was clearly a master taxidermist. It was just leaning against a pile of miscellaneous things. 100 bucks later it was in my truck. I remember staring at it thinking how happy the old fella was that he bagged it and shortly thereafter passed. His wife sold everything. At least it's not in a barn or over a bar in a smokey drinking house. My love for them started while hunting southeastern Ohio where most mature bucks are titans. This year I start learning taxidermy and antler replication as a hobby that maybe will turn into a full time gig. Find a job you love and you'll never work another day in your life.

I live in Kansas, though I've never seen anything like that but through the years I've seen massive antlers being sold at garage sales and just setting around at farms collecting dust. Dosnt surprise me at all they were just laying their in the farmers house not even giving it a second thought. A rancher I know told me about a big buck he seen and let the neighbor come over and shoot it. He said it was a good one, but only had 8 points. A couple years later I seen the mount and he was right it was only an 8 point but I belive the score sheet said 171 and change, I just chuckled when I remember the rancher telling me about it.

Years ago I had some family who lived in this house where all the beds were in one room and a kitchen in a separate room. The room with the beds doubled as the living room. The walls were covered with giant mule deer mounts. Some were so old and moth eaten they almost looked like European mounts. They kept the largest of the good mounts and burned the others. Would have to say most were over 200. The good one the family kept was actually a nice smaller set around the 190 mark. I am near sixty and that was a while ago. There were some Daddies there. My father has a set that scored 244 giant chocolate rack. This other old timer had three monsters on his wall. One was the same size as my Pops. Yes I do believe someone out there has a true monster no one has seen before. I should post my Dads Rack. My cousins, they got rid of so many huge ones. Had to have gotten them back in between the 1920's to the 1940's. Maybe not the best taxidermy job? Was creepy in that house. That house was torn down a couple years later and they said there was like two tons of bat guano in the attic. How it never caved in I have no clue. And it could not have been healthy. In fact I doubt any of those people ever showed the mounts they have. People will leave some up in the rafters of their garage. Their wives won't let it in their house and gets forgotten. I had seen a few that were destroyed by rodents. And I do not believe any of those others were even scored. One good reason to have a man cave.

The shrinking that happens during the drying process occurs in the spread of the buck, due to the moisture in the skull drying. This makes the inside spread less. The fact these are sheds really has nothing to do with this particular case. Amazing deer none the less.

This is DEFINITELY not the largest Whitetail "ever" in 1982-83 an individual from Texas ( Stephen) traveled to Saskatchewan to buy heads. He got SPECIFIC ORDERS from Canadian Parks & Wildlife on how to legal purchase and transport Whitetail heads out of Canada and into the US. Stephen ( no I'm not including his last name ) hunted down at least 5 heads larger than this one in the video, along with a number of non-typicals also larger than anything ever recorded. Exhausting all of his revenue he returned to the Canadian/US border and presented his heads and all paperwork previously requested from this EXACT border crossing by Canadian government personnel. A different Ranger ( a real piece of dogsh##, hope your reading this ) put the handcuffs on Stephen and began pounding up all the heads with the exception of maybe 3 while laughing at Stephen. Stephen was eventually released. Stephen returned to Texas to raise more capital and returned to Saskatchewan and purchased additional heads which he successfully crossed into the US and sold most to me. At the time 2 of these heads outscored anything in existence. You mentioned Dick, what a joke. Furthermore my Amish friends in Ohio and Pennsylvania have deer that DWARF anything grown outside of Amish pens and the Amish do not jack their deer on copper. Almost forgot , Stephen and his LOVELY wife had a mule deer head that dwarfed anything in Cabellos or Bass Pro, or the current world record or the largest known shet of sheds and refused to sell it to me at any price. Live long and prosper my friends, there's a whole lot of BS in the hunting world, and then there's the truth.

I know big bucks when I see them ,killing 15 Mule deer from 180 - 202 “ but back in 1980 visiting my relatives friends in preecville sask ,old timer had some white tails hanging that were amazing ,just short distance from the Milo Hansen buck ,they just never mounted or ever scored them .👍I know they would of made B&C ,I’ve always wanted to revisit this old barn .

It's breathtaking, but can you imagine it if the left side was a mirror image of the right, instead of being visibly weaker?

Things are lots different in this day and time. It’s almost like picking a pair of shoes. It’s big business now days and lots are filling their pockets off so called hunting just so you can have something hanging on the wall. May as well send out a magazine and just order your deer and have ups deliver packaged meat and a mount for the wall.

That buck is not from Nebraska, maybe picked up there but definitely the buck my grandpa shot that was stolen in the early 50's, along with the 10 pointer with a 27.5" inside spread the year after. Both shot in Forest Co, WI, stolen in Brown Co, WI.
