A reaction profile can be used to describe if a reaction or process is exothermic or endothermic. The energy is stored in the bonds of the reactants and products. The energy in the reactants and products changes during the reaction. Both types of reactions have an activation energy that needs to be met to start the reaction; however endothermic reactions have much bigger activation energies as more energy is needed to start the reactions. Exothermic reactions have negative overall energy changes, whereas endothermic reactions have positive overall energy changes.
