A metal crucible is filled with iron-oxide and aluminum. A small amount of potassium, sugar and chloride is placed on top of iron-oxide aluminum mixture. A few drops of concentrated sulphuric acide is added to the mixture to start the reaction. The reaction extremely exothermic. The crucible becomes red hot. The aluminum has reduced the iron-oxide to iron.

Open air fire due to burning office supplies does not create enough heat/energy to melt steel. That's why many camping wood fire stoves are made of steel (open air fire of carbon based matter all heats at similiar temperatures. The oxidation of aluminium creates an exothermic reaction (unlike water) as the metal goes from metal to liquid. It releases enough energy/heat to melt steel. ...I think you know where I'm going with this...

The correct names for the compounds you listed are iron(II) oxide and iron(III) oxide. Alternatively, the Latin names for iron can be used instead of the Roman numerals. Anyway, the reaction will only occur with the iron(III) ion present.

You can oxidize just about anything, just burn it. But the aluminum "burnt" up in the reaction.

there is no sodium in there. You can ignite thermite in many ways. They chose to use the oxidation of sugar to light the reduction of iron.

i see a lot of controversy about the correct spelling and pronunciation of Al. I don't think it honestly matters. when two cultures are for the most part isolated from each other, common words and phrases get construed and even changed entirely. i.e. in the U.K. lower body garments are referred to as trousers. In the U.S. they are commonly called pants. the name associated with a person, place, or thing doesn't change it's properties.

I think you've got something messed up there... not sure cuz I'm not a chemics genious You've got: -Fe2 in the beginning but end up with 1 Fe -1 Al in the beginning and eng up with 2Al if the beginning is correct then I think you should end up like this: Fe2 O3 + Al -> Al O3 + 2Fe But I presume you messed up the base: Fe2 O3 + Al2 -> Al2 O3 + 2Fe Let me know if I'm wrong.
