After over 2 years of owning this car, I'm finally going to touch on why my Subaru BRZ is stock, and will remain stock for as long as I own it. Like I say in this video, this is all just for my personal case, I will be doing a video in the near future with a friend with his modified FR-S. Thanks for watching!

Definitely agree with you, the 86 is such a great car out of the factory. I really don't have the urge to go out and modify for no reason. Although I do think an exhaust upgrade is necessary haha.

My thoughts exactly, the day the BRZ stops being a joy to drive, is the day I'll get rid of it, not mod it. But that's just not happening!

Great video, I too also plan on buying a BRZ and will leave it completely stock, my previous car was completely modified and heres why I wouldn't do it again: 1. Price, these parts are expensive and whats worse is the labour costs (even if you plan on doing it most your self, the tools required won't be cheap or the time taken). 2. Re-sale value, added from point 1.... All of it is wasted, so many people think "Oh I spent $10k on my car therefore I can sell my car for 10k more", the reality is - you have a seriously tiny niche audience once the car is modified.. It also scares potential buyers because 'Its a modified car, its obviously been thrashed its whole life". 3. Addiction. Seriously, this is a bad one. First you start off with an Exhaust .. Which leads to an intake .. Headers.. Full tune ... Then the wheels.. New rims.. Tyres.. suspension.. breaks.. disks.. pads... etc etc it does not STOP. There is ALWAYS a mod you can get. 4. N/A Cars cost a LOT to push performance (mix between point 1 and 3), if you want serious gains - You need to go forced induction.. Forget N/A the gains for the money you spent is laughable. 5. Insurance .. Once your car is heavily modified, your insurance costs begin to cost a lot more and most of the time you'll have to switch insurance companies because not all support modified cars and if you don't tell your insurance company about your car being modded then when you get into an accident (even if it aint your fault) chances are they won't cover you. 6. Fuel efficiency which is a pretty good aspect of the BRZ. It's one of the reasons I sold my RX8 .. When you mod your car and tune it, you worsen your fuel economy. 7. Attention. Heaps of mods and stickers/loud-exhaust attracts attention, whether its kids on the street telling you to "FLOOR IT BRO", or teenagers driving their civics trying to race you, police targeting you. 8. It ruins the detail of the originality of the car. The BRZ was tested by Subaru/Toyota the way it is, the car was designed by top leading engineers and is one of the best reviewed cars out there - why would you want to go around and mess that up with 3rd party adding and what not. 9. RELIABILITY. This is probably the second most important point - When you start to mod your car, you start to hamper the reliability of your car, tuning your car with 3rd party headers/exhaust/camshafts bla bla.. 10. Warranty - if the car is still under warranty, 99% chance that it will void it if you start to throw on 3rd party mods.

I'm gonna drive mine into the ground. Hence turbo kit, wheels, suspension, clutch, tail lights. I have no intention of selling it, it's a toy. I bought it so i wouldn't buy another bike. I like the style, love the handling and with turbo it's just enough extra fun than stock to keep me happy. It's a project car for me. I've still spent less on it than a stock 370Z.

I had a 89 Presude with 4 wheel steering. It was 20 when I bought it, and I feel like it was extremely low miles. It wasn’t that fast, but handled well, and was a joy to drive. I had to get some work done, for a week they loaned me an Eclipse GT V6 hard top. Didn’t like. Climbed back into my Prelude and it was like a comfy pair of old shoes. It fit right. I want a BRZ it is a Sports car like my Prelude. Smal Car, light weight, ample engine, and built to drive. Just workin on the finances. The Corvette isn’t a sports cat it is a Performance car.

The best thing on earth was to lower my frs with TRD lowering springs. I daily drive it and only scraped lightly twice in three years. Never ever bottomed out speed bumps are not a problem. I got to be honest as someone who bought and built a 450kw track monster 86 for one of our local drivers , when we were in the process of buying the car we looked for the cheapest car with reasonable mileage that was *BONE STOCK* even something with basic mods like lights was cut out. The reason is you can't tell if the previous person who owned the car was a hack e.g bunch of stripped bolts, cross threading, dodgy wiring jobs etc. These problems will only show when you start to work on it and it's just a massive pain to deal with. This doesn't mean don't modify your BRZ/86 just when it comes time to sell to make as much money as possible return as most mechanical mods as you can stock. Little things can be left on but for the most part return to stock.
@makingretro
@makingretro 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. You could mod the car all day long and you're still not going to win at drag races or track days, so what's the point? The car, stock, has all the performance and handling it needs to be fun to drive.

I live in CA. I told them that I'll put down 15k only if they would do the whole body kit suspension and exhaust with my ELD.Roots Supercharger & AfterMarket Rims and Tires maybe that's why. anyways I'm thinking of getting it blue and replacing the hood with carbon fiber black. plus I'm going to remove the whole back seat put the cross bar in than have the back seat area Fiberglass for show but really to house a JL Audio 13w7 with the JL Amp. we're I would sit. the sub will be were your back goes. & the rest of the Car speakers will be Focals K series, I'm not worried about resale because when I do this I plan on keeping the Car. I also plan on buying the Chevy Volt 2017 all by next yeAr July this will tAke place. I agree with your viewpoints. I've owned a BRZ for 2 years now and I've only added Whiteline bushings and just recently switched to a Flex Fuel tune. I don't know for sure about the BRZ but since the 86/FR-S are the same car, and Toyota won't void your warranty at all for using the TRD mods, maybe Subaru would stand by that as well? TRD offers a quick shifter (my personal go-to mod for a lot of manuals), lowering springs, sway bars, wheels, and catback exhaust. I'm getting a 2017 Toyota 86 soon and I'm for sure getting the quick shifter and the exhaust, I'll have to test the stock suspension before I consider the springs and sway bars.

I also got a brand new 2015 "frs" back in November. Agree that we should enjoy the free warranty we get. I spoke to my dealership and they said that any modifications like turbo,intake,even exhaust will void it. The only way it won't is if I get the TRD brand and they install it. I think at least you should modify the outside of the car. Rims/lights will make it look nice. I live in NY so lowering my car even further as a daily driver, I refuse to do. Definitely think about doing outside modifications to make it look a nicer. Eventually I would like to boost up the hp but nothing crazy

Resale is garbage for any vehicle. After just two years my car had lost $8,000 for private sale and around $13,000 for trade-in with low miles, practically like-new condition, and basically stock. Now that the newest 86 has a ton more features the original cars are going to be even cheaper. I saw the same with my 05 STI. Mods don't matter unless they're so far from stock that they shrink the potential buyer market. My STI, with just an intake didn't sell any worse than stock vehicles on AutoTrader. Just keep your stock parts and don't do anything drastic. There's plenty to dislike abou the 86 as an owner, especially as a new parent. No steering wheel controls (buh buh simplicity! Well the 2017 now has controls so that's BS), huge torque dip with stock fueling and header, no aero and the car gets floaty much above 100mph, cheap head unit and stock speakers, crickets anyone?, direct injector failure is common, stock header sounds like crap, LOL leg room in the back seat, honestly the back seat is basically pointless and you have to be a contortionist to get anything in and out back there, no factory turbo option... I could go on, but it IS a fun car to drive and fairly easy to mod. There are just far too many shortcomings and BS cost-saving compromises made with the early cars to be a total fanboy over it. I enjoy driving mine, but it's so annoying to climb in and out of and put my 2-year-old son into that I'll probably sell it for a pickup or go back to an STI. They should have made it a tad longer with four doors.
@ImBackMan123

ImBackMan123 Suits me fine for SCCA runs and SoCal canyon runs. For general every day use, it has far more shortcomings than you seem willing to admit. I'll probably sell mine, but if Subaru ever gets around to making a genuine turbo'd BRZ STI I might be willing to deal with the daily driver shortcomings after trading in. The 2017 is a much better deal than previous models and blows away all the fanboy (doesn't need steering wheel controls) BS.
@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 7 жыл бұрын
the Candyman I've been over it. Haven't sold the car yet. I'm just a realist about it's shortcomings. It's easy to go on KZfaq and spew a line of BS about how wonderful a vehicle is, failing to mention major factors that might turn off potential buyers. Better to be critical of every vehicle and continue to push manufacturers to keep kicking their designs to the next level. We wouldn't have a BRZ if no ever complained about there being no RWD boxer in Subaru's lineup. That said, if you want a reasonably priced sportscar with fantastic handling, decent power, and a beautifully-sculpted body, the BRZ is a great choice. If you want to build a RWD time attack car, it's a great starting platform. That's why I bought mine. Wasn't expecting to start a family at the time.

You definitely make a good point and so does Zach. I definitely agree with the 2 year old, you should probably go back to the STI. Definitely a great fun car with a bit more utility. I almost bought a WRX instead of my FRS but I have a Jeep Cherokee XJ for the winters here and I'd just end up modding the WRX to the point where it was worthless in the snow due to high power and lowness. I decided I wanted a dedicated winter vehicle (which I already had) and a dedicated summer fun canyon ripper that I can modify without fear of un-driveability, and the FRS does that absolutely perfectly.

Consider MTEC shift springs to make the shifter more positive. $30, and a very easy install. Beyond that, maybe a TRD quick shifter to make the throws shorter (with the shift springs, the shifter becomes even more mechanical).

1) cost money a. plenty of cheap aftermarket for the BRZ 2) You don't get the money back a. put back stock parts b. put back stock tune c. sell parts d. sell car 3) I agree 4) stock suspension a. I think coil overs completely change the cars look and feel but ur opinion 5)enjoy the way it is a. I think anyone can agree some new tires, a header + exaughst and a tune will make the car 1000 times better. total would cost you MAX 2k and very simple modifications almost anyone can do. if you want to resell, sell the parts, return to stock, sell the car. why would you purchase a car knowing you're going to sell it? that's ridiculous in my opinion. it's ur car do what you want but the stock car is not perfect, no car is. I'm seriously telling you some big new tires, headers, exaughst, and a tune will completely change the car and IMO unlock it's full potential. I would add coilovers too but maybe not in ur situation. You get rid of the torque dip and add significant torque and hp gains that really liven up the car. fairly simple to do everything yourself or with a buddy.

But he said it was his daily driver. Tq dip and it's "potential" is irrelevent. He enjoys the car stock. Will he enjoy the car modded, probably. But he enjoys it as-is and that's that. He's not tracking it, he's doesn't seem to want to break 100s with it on a regular basis, he's not throwing it in a stance battle. It's his stock daily driver. And that's a perfectly legitimate use of the car. If it the specs weren't fine, then it would have been put out with better stock specs at base trim. Nobody's gonna want to buy your clapped out BRZ when they can get a stock one. Firstly the point of custom is that it's tailored to YOU, so any buyer is naturally going to have different tastes than you. Buying stock, they know exactly what's in the car and that the parts are meant to work together then mod it themselves.

if i put a wide body kit and an exhaust, will it depreciate?
@ashermerkabah
@ashermerkabah 7 жыл бұрын
Probably since most if not all the wide body 86's require you to cut the fenders in order to properly install them. They look great but I'd only do it if you plan on keeping the car for yourself forever. I'm guessing 20 years down the road these will be like 240sx's though, so if you keep it clean and nice for that long, drift tax will kick in and it will be worth a mountain of cash. Just don't let it rust out or anything like that.

You're comparing a modified car to a smokers car, seriously?...that is a horrible comparison! Go buy your mods, do what you want. Cars depreciate no matter what, who cares, do what you want. Keep it clean, thats what matters! Stay stock, stay boring lol

Right, I will "do what I want" Stock it is...
@randomuserame
@randomuserame 5 жыл бұрын
I'm actually looking for an FRS right now, but I *don't* want a modded one. I'm looking for a bone stock one so that I can do the mods I want, *myself*. And I don't want to deal with selling someone else's parts. Nor do I wan them to tack the cost of reversion onto the price of the car itself. So much easier and less headache to just get one that's been kept stock and maintained well. I'm sure it's nice to throw money around and just "get a fast car" but if that's what I wanted to do, then I wouldn't get this car for that. I can get a different car that's stock, but faster than this one is modded. (That was one of the points in the video). So, yes and no. If the buyer isn't looking to do their own work on the car, but they want it modded, then modding it is good. If they want to DIY, or use different parts, or to keep it stock, then a modded one isn't going to grab them. How well it sells is the number of people in each respective category (DIYers vs Money Throwers)

What about an frs with a trd exhaust? I mean it's Toyota with a Toyota part.
@ashermerkabah
@ashermerkabah 7 жыл бұрын
That's usually fine and even looked at as a selling point to a lot of people. Generally if it's still under warranty it will still be covered, and definitely if installed by the dealership. TRD also makes wheels, suspension and you can even get a Five Axis body kit, and it would all be covered by warranty. The TRD exhaust isn't very loud, so it would make the average Joe feel better that they bought a sweet sports car because it sounds better than completely stock.

I bought mine with 14k miles used, it is a 2013, for 19k. My payments on it are $350 a month and I have pretty good insurance and multi-car discount through progressive so my payment comes to about $50 for full coverage on my FRS. So total payments is only $400/mo. Oh and it came with an extended 6yr/100,000 mile warranty, bumper to bumper.

Yeah I know it's not really a popular idea to keep a car (especially a BRZ) stock. That's why I made this video, to clear why I personally am not doing anything to it. In short, I'd just rather spend that money on a second car down the road.

Exoticars19 I was just kidding man, at least you drive it! One of the 30 in my country is my neighbor and its parked throughout the year. If I would've told you this in real life you would know I was joking but you can't really see my face expression on the internet anyway I think an ft86 is already a wolf and there are tons of people rocking nice exterior mods without touching the engine. It's not like it's a mk 4 golf it's already a sports car that will beat most cars on the freeway a lot of people don't understand that

Tint is the first thing I ever did to any car I've ever had. Not only is it good for you but for your cars interior as well. Seeing as how the BRZ and FRS both have lots of grayish plastic pieces it helps preserve its color over time without the sun fading it.

Also I have the same warranty, modifying the car doesn't void the warranty. I made sure of that before paying the extra $1900 for the warranty. Lowering the car actually improves the steering response, meatier tires improve the horrible grip of the stock Prius tires. It's a car literally built for tuners... and you can always get your money back. You keep stock parts and if you choose to sell the car you put the car back to stock and sell all the aftermarket parts. This whole video just made no sense
@TexasRevving
@TexasRevving 7 жыл бұрын
Oh no, you unsubscribed? What ever will I do? KZfaq is all I got! *sarcastic voice* Okay, where do I start... If my car were 1cm lower It would scrape on my driveway (I already scrape when I back out straight) I don't track this car or anything along those lines, just windy road cruising which the cheap stock tires do without any problems, as for any other mods, in my personal case I don't feel it's worth it even if I get my money back (which wouldn't happen) it's not worth the time & hassle for me. Put this into perspective for me Trevor, in this video I stressed that this is why I am not modifying my personal car for my own reasons. This video is not agains mods in general. So you're literally getting upset because of my own preferences. Kinda childish...
