Exovent - A New Treatment for Coronavirus and Sleep Apnoea

The Exovent device is a machine designed by a team of volunteer doctors and engineers to provide a new solution for the COVID19 Coronavirus pandemic crisis. Now that the first prototypes are being made there is increasing evidence that these devices could be used in central sleep apnoea, and possibly obesity hypoventilation syndrome and obstructive sleep apnoea.
Exovent is a negative pressure ventilation system, which is excellent for helping you breathe, but does not have a disadvantages of positive pressure ventilation systems. This video explains how negative pressure ventilation systems like Exovent work, and how they may be useful for sleep apnoea patients.

The world needs more people like you and your colleagues! I was recently diagnosed with a flurry of issues at age 55. Had I not been learning about how to treat my own patients for sleep disordered breathing as a dentist, I would never have stumbled across the fact that I have EDS and sleep apnea. It was all being chalked up to menopause potpourri of specialists that I have been sent to. Thank God for my own curious mind! I look forward to watching your videos as at least one out of three people I meet are easily evaluated and screened for OSA. including my eldest son who is graduating us a dentist and his fiancé is starting emergency medicine residency,.

I saw an iron lung in 1985, at the time I was a teenager. This is something I will never forget, it haunts me to this day. I appreciate the exovent looks much more user friendly, only half the body is enclosed. But I hope and pray that I will never have to see an exovent iron lung. Thank you for the video though

Agreed, I saw a documentary on polio sufferers and then recently I saw a movie on the subject. Both were harrowing. Exovent isn't meant to be a long-term thing. it's more of a step down from intubation so we can free up beds, and prevent the complications of long-term intubation. Thankfully polio is mostly a thing of the past. we have a new generation of demons to contend with now.

@@VikVeerENTSurgeon that is very true, a new generation of demons/viruses. Referring to your kind reply, iron lungs were not meant for long term use at the time. Polio patients were "ideally" meant to stay in them for a few weeks, and they used to wean patients by gradually increasing the time outside of the iron lung. Being a ENT surgeon, you know all of this anyway, I am sure. Sadly some patients stayed in the iron lungs for many months, years, and sometimes for most of their lives. The portalung was invented, which looked much friendlier and was much lighter, but according to service users, the iron lung was more efficient. Very often the spine of Polio patients was so misshapen due to disease and time spent in the respirator, that it simply was not an option to come out of the lung. I spent many years researching this. The sight of a real iron lung when I was 16 years old caused me much distress and almost developed into a phobia. Hence I watch and read absolutely everything I can find regarding the iron lung. Please accept my apologies regarding the long reply and by no means do I intend to portray the Exovent in a negative way. I am fully aware that its much less stress on a patient than sedation and intubation would cause. Its just a very personal matter to me, due to my unfortunate encounter with the "good old fashioned" iron lung and no doubt my mother's reaction at the time and dry explanation of what this machine was actually doing. I followed the late John Prestwich's life story, watched documentaries and a film of Rosanna Benzi and many others. I do have a medical background professionally, and I was lucky enough to visit the Gordon pathology museum when I moved to England in 1991. Maybe one day, I will have this chance again. In the meantime, I wish you good success in developing Exovent further to an even smaller device. Thank you.

Thank you Vik for such an interesting video which I came across by accident when looking for a different one. I personally have severe OSA with non-obesity hypoventilation (cause unknown of HV) so guess not for me, but very interesting for suitable patients when smaller. Amazing information... 54 yrs, Indian,non diabetic, mild hypertensive having ethmoid sinus experience obstructive sleep apnea...now doing tongue n breath exercise... after Corona surge....will consult sleeping expert for further diagnosis... with regards

Hello! Great video. Thanks for sharing. Have you ever considered the Hayek RTX? It can offer what Exovent delivers and some, while using a much smaller cuirass shell applied to the patients chest.

The Hayek device is an excellent device and works really well in their target population. Although exovent is also based on negative pressure, it functions very differently and ultimately treats different population groups. There is a lot of interest in these ideas, and we are undoubtedly going to learn so much from these devices long term.

I'm interested in this concept. Central sleep apnea, using Resmed Aircurve ASV with low flow O2 overnight, and I still manage to not breathe - CPAP air gets swallowed or just blows out my mouth. Taping lips only helps partially. I'd be interested in participating in any studies of this or similar device to treat apnea.

Oh my Lord, this would be a fabulous device for sleep apnea! What kind of testing needs to be done in order to know what type of sleep apnea someone has? My doctor did a sleep study in the hospital after just looking into my mouth & simply told me I have a thick tongue & an operation isn’t possible to correct sleep apnea in my case. What other testing can be done to figure out what type of sleep apnea I may have? I currently have a CPAP machine that I VERY SELDOM use because it wakes me up just about every time I use it. Thanks so much for all your research & development, I appreciate you & these videos, GOD BLESS YOU & YOUR TEAM!!!

Exactly the same principle yes! The difference is that Exovent is much lighter (about 10kg), easier to get in and out of, smaller (really just around the chest rather than the whole body), and much cheaper. We are currently trying to make a £300 exovent that can be constructed from scratch from supplies simply bought in an average sized African town. The idea is to make something that we can construct quickly and simply with maximal effectiveness. Those Iron Lungs where phased out because they were too big and too expensive, but we want to bring it back and also show the benefits of this technology. Now safer than positive pressure, more comfortable, and cheaper is what we want to explain to the world.

Sounds like the iron lungs used in America for polio patients. And seems like a great idea, if it can be made smaller. I wouldn't want that machine in my house!

I have obstructive sleep apnea and see tremendous hope in this new technology. I cannot under any circumstances tolerate cpap masks, I’ve tried them all...I pull them off during sleep as I find them claustrophobic . I hope a domestic version becomes available ASAP, thanks Dr Veer and to your fellow team members for doing this research🤞

I understand that there are governments around the world who are aiming to start building them soon. I am working on some videos soon, but they have a proper film maker now so I doubt I will have much a chance to lead on that. I will bring out footage of the device once I get to use it.

Although I snore but never had any sleep problem untill last month when I had chest pains due to digestion issues. Due to which I took lot of stress and since then everytime I try to sleep, I wake up with shortness of breath and my heart racing. And I don't get enough sleep. I feel tired whole day and it's really affecting my daily life. I called my gp, and I was advised to take phenegran. But I feel it's something else. Am I suffering from sleep apnea? Is it possible to develop sleep apnea all of a sudden?

I have difficulty sleeping, i can not deflate my lungs,while sleeping, the dighragm kicks in to breathout that keeps me awake,and the urge to breathe out properly wakes me up early,please help

yes pretty much, the only differences are that it's light weight, cheap and only covers the chest.

LOL people are NOT well enough to get off their ventilators. Also we don't have these machines everywhere...if someone died in this thing it would be chaos.
