My wife just got her first billy goat. Now that she has a buck goat, she is hoping for baby goats in the spring. He is a registered Nigerian Dwarf goat that is two years old. And he smells bad. Everyone says billy goats stink, and they are correct. You can smell this buck from several hundred feed away if you are downwind. Today we are expanding the goat pen using electric netting from premier 1 fence. This is allow us to move the fence to give them different areas to forage.

I would leave the other panels up, so that you can close them in if needed. Just add a small gate section so they can go out into the electric net fenced area.

If you'll put 2x2 wire paneling inside the slatted part of the feeder, you'll have less waste of hay. ;) Lumnah Acres did that for their feeders and have had a lot less waste!

laptop with a teleprompter program just off camera...lol Going to be fun seeing how long it takes them to knock the grass down. Plot your brush clearing spots & setup your 'clear lanes' before the fencing goes in place. Could have them clear around the raised beds after everything finishes. I wonder if a rutting billygoat would be 'offensive' to deer? Deer ignore cows but, not familiar with goat/deer interaction. Going to bet whitetails will just sail over that fence if they choose to cross it, Plus the hot wire should keep predators away too. Seems like I saw gentle man using that hot tape to wrap around his watering pipes to keep them from freezing during winter in his Rabbitry. So Colony style management vs pen/traditional keep them in 5sqft/rabbit enclosure with a nesting box for the does in the fence as a tractor type enclosure. Run the waterers off the nest box with auto feeders mounted too. (if needed) bol & stand refurbishment time too

If you have a local farmer wanting to get rid of old hay or straw bales to make space, you can build a bale wall (and possibly even a bale roof) around the plastic barrel for excellent insulation. If the goats lie in there with that around the outside it will be toasty warm for them and still provide good ventilation.

This is the formula for skunk spray but is known to work on other types of odors. To neutralize SKUNK spray instantly: Mix the following: 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide. 1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) 1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent. Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the sprayed clothes or victim thoroughly. Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable. I have seen where some use one gallon of water with the mix Keep all ingredients in a bucket ready for use

Nice-looking billy goat, that fencing should work. Premier does make a sheep / goat fencing. The deer are pretty cautious about everything, so unless they're at a full trot they're not going to bother the fence. If you have troubles with it staying up you can get some cheap fiberglass rods to stabilize it in between the posts, just weave it through the pattern. You can buy extra post from premiere but you can get them cheaper at your big box stores. Thanks for sharing the homestead with us, Jimmy

I hear flags on a string type decorations creeps out deer and they won't try jumping over short fences if the flags are above it. There might be tasteful enough ones somewhere to have at the front of the property.

I'm sure you know , but billy should be kept at least 100yds. away in a seperate pen, and only put in with the nannys till their bred. Then shampoo the girls so they dont smell. Billy goats are constant breeders , they dont come in rut.

The premier 1 "plus" netting is better, the posts are ~6' apart rather than 12. The net I have with the 12' spacing, I have to put a step in post in between to make it decent. It's all pretty much a psychological barrier, if they hit it hard it's not going to stop much, just too flimsy. I like mine overall though, I rotational graze with it. A lot of work to move very often. I have never had a deer get into it but I run guard dogs so I doubt seriously a deer is going to get within 500 yards of mine.
@CountryViewAcres
@CountryViewAcres 4 жыл бұрын
Premier 1 plus only came 100 foot rolls, so I got the other to get 164 feet. I am looking at some drivable fiber glass posts for the corners. Since we will probably only move it once a month.

Hey Evan, how come everything is Rebecca's first, the goats now the billy what's next a cow or horses? Evan you'll have to quit your day job to become a real farmer the chores will keep you busy 12/16 hours a day 7 days a week with no time for fishing or hunting. Good luck homesteader.

The goats are definitely Rebekah's. I wouldn't buy them myself. Not a dirty goat. I wouldn't mind buy meat goats, sheep, or cows. I am actually in a tree stand right now answering this, so I am trying to find the time to hunt and fish.

You need to stop the buck’s bad behavior immediately. Do not allow him touch you. Don’t hand feed him. Get a cattle prod and use it any time he attack you. And yes he is attacking you by touching you. Next you have to keep the deer out. They carry a worm that is deadly to goats. Only 30% of the goats that are infected with the deer worm survive. I love your Chanel and think that you are really doing great job improving the farm.

that netting is nothing for dear, I watch the dear jump over my 4 foot high electric wire fence all over my property, they see that strand of 14ga wire even running full out and jump it like it is not even there, I have shot dear in mid jump over the wire, I am sure if they can see a 14ga silver wire I am sure they will see that neon white netting and jump it. how ever I do have the odd moose walk though the wire and bend tee posts over, brake the wire. I would never buy that netting fence, it coast far to much for a 160 foot long peace, over $400.00 cnd, and it make so little space, even for my turkeys and chickens 2x4 welded wire been working great for many years with a one wire electric 10 inch off the ground on the out side keeps the predators out. and a 350 foot roll of 2x4 wire is so cheap, just don't buy it in the 50 or 100 foot rolls as its 2 x the cost, for all my live stock one strand of 14 ga electric wire keeps everyone in, and I have over 4 miles of it out, and a 1/2 mile for the pigs in the bush
Clearing out the pig pen, so it can become part of the pasture.
