Gracias Luis...my wife and I do have a high degree of respect for the Mexican people, their customs and traditions. We moved to retire here in 2007 with just that intent to immerse ourselves. We are grateful for the warm welcome and hospitality shown us by Mexico. I appreciate your comment. --- DAVID HUFF

Mexican people are indeed very warm and welcoming to our neighbors, it is unfortunate that sometimes we are not reciprocated when we are in the States. a few bad apples don't reflect the vast majority of my people who are hard working and kind individuals. Thanks for sharing your views and experiences in Mexico and as we like to say "mi casa es su casa" enjoy our great country its people, the beautiful landscapes, and our food.

There are a few "bad apples" wherever one goes, but overall the warmth and hospitality of the Mexicans here at Lake Chapala have made it a great retirement life for Catherine and I. It is a shame that there are people in the U.S. who do not reciprocate this hospitality. Gracias por las palabras..."mi casa es su casa." The scenery, people and food here is exceptional and we do enjoy it daily. -- DAVID HUFF

Luis Rodriguez , we visit Mexico many times out of the year and we are trying to figure a way to move out of the United States and to Mexico . We love it there and it truly is the people, culture. The food, music and scenery and weather are extras 😉 there are great people here in the US but yes there is a big difference in how kindness and welcoming is different and the great people here are becoming more scarce as society is crumbling with the influence and obsession with television, electronics and celebrities. I find it sad that some places in Mexico want to be more like the states, I wish there were a way of telling someone who cares it will be the biggest mistake ever! The best places are because of attitude, and family not technology and shallowness.

We so respect the people & culture here. The food, music, scenery, cost of living are extras. We have good friends & know good people in the US but the materialism, bias outlook and values were becoming unacceptable. I hope the concepts from north of the border never arrive here to ant extent. US attitudes & values would only spoil, not improve, Mexico. Thanks for your thoughts & words--DAVID HUFF

This sounds exactly like my kind of place! Quite frankly, I'm sick of the propaganda and lies of MSM in the U.S., sick of the lack of affordable healthcare, sick of politics, sick of all of it! I want to live a minimalist, healthy, relaxed, unpretentious lifestyle...on a meager budget. I would LOVE to learn Spanish and a new culture. Wonderful observation of Mexico. The life and people have been found incredible. The news media and US govt. do seem to promote scare tactics. There are problems in Mexico just as in the US and worldwide, but in 11 years here we have feared for our safety ever. Live simple as the Mexicans do. Don't flash money or affluent material possessions. Learn basic Spanish and use it, blending in rather than standing out in the community. Those who don't look for problems and trouble, seldom find it.

Thanks Jesse for your comment. Yes, Mexico has been good to us and for us for what will be 12 years this Summer. I do fear some that the local infrastructure can't handle the influx of new expatriates and the ones visiting Lake Chapala for a near future move. Hope we don't lose our beautiful small fishing village environment to an over population or trend to "Americanize" our community.

David and his comments are right on target. I have also lived here in Ajijic for 10 years and have adjusted to the low key, low stress life style that I have come to love here in Mexico. When I have returned to the US for whatever I return home grateful for the peace and security that I have here. The weather and nature are as beautiful as Hawaii without the expense. Exploring the neighboring cities beside Guadalajara leaves me filled with joy and wonder at the long and interesting history of this beautiful and culturally rich country.

I have just been on social security and I have only $1,600 per month to spend. Can I have a good life on that amount? It all sound so beautiful -- for many reasons, I found the US more and more difficult to exist in. I want to involve myself into another culture. I love the Mexican people. Thank you.

I have watched several videos about the Chapala area and I have not yet seen a police officer in any of them. That speaks a lot for the safety of the area.

@davidhuff4562
@davidhuff4562 4 жыл бұрын
@@miguelidcomm : Good Evening Miguel...it is not the area of the city that reflects buying or rental cost, but what village you choose to live in. I live in Ajijic & it is regarded as the expat center of the north shore. Overall, the cost is higher here because there are more expats interested in living here. Makes a shortage of rental options too it seems. Go west to San Juan Cosala or Jocotepec & it seems rental is less; go east to San Antonio Tlayacapan, Riberas del Pilar or Chapala & again it appears less. Not to say those areas are inferior because they are very nice communities. A neighborhood could have one house sell for say US$350,000 & at other end of street a house sell for US$150,000. Same true with rent. I've lived in the same 2BR/2 1/2 bath for 12 years at a very good rental cost in nice neighborhood, so yes there is affordable rents. In Ajijic, I would guess the average range is US$750-1500/month. I'm not sure that answers your question, but feel free to email me at HUFFDAVIDR@aol.com if what I said needs clarification or you have further question(s).

@@davidhuff4562 I cannot find the best way to thank you for taking the time to answer my question, Mr. Huff. I'm actually originally from Guadalajara, but I've lived in the US since I was a teenager. I'm in my late thirties now, and due to the political situation in the United States, I'm seriously considering going back (as Mexican as I am, I feel more of an "expat," at this point). Of course I could try using my language skills and try to get a job in Guadalajara, but since I am now so used to the small city life of the Midwest, I'm not sure I want to live in a large city again. That's why Ajijíc came to mind. I thought maybe with the big number of expats there, I could try working and living outside (but close) to Guadalajara, and feel more "at home." Well, we'll see! I guess I'll go to Guadalajara first, but then head to the Chapala area, and based on your advice, go from there. Thank you, again! I'll let you know if I have any more questions via email. And who knows, maybe if I make it there (or even if I end up just living in Guadalajara) we'll get to meet. 😊 - Miguel Rodríguez.

The political climate is worse now than when we migrated in 2007 & I understand what you are saying. Yes, please feel free to ask questions if you want & email might be best. I too like that fact that he values Mexican culture. My question is about the music in the background. I heard one other expat say that most places do not have law like we have in the United States: If your neighbor is blaring music in Mexico, don't call the police because disturbing your neighbors is not illegal. That would drive me crazy. But, living in a fishing village sounds wonderful.
@davidhuff4562
@davidhuff4562 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call it blaring music, but rather Mexican tradition. They are passing laws that limit the volume & time of day for loud/excessive music, but the consensus is that it will be lightly enforced, if at all. It can get loud at a special celebration at times, but as is possible in the US, just go talk to your neighbor. Mexicans are people who want to please & show hospitality & likely a neighborly talk will resolve. Noise, including cohetes (skyrockets) late at night & at dawn, along with music, is part of Mexico life & culture & no one, including law, will change that. If that would drive you crazy, then Mexico may not be for you. No matter how long you live here, you are still a guest. As the video said, don't come here expecting it to be like the US. You need to adapt & become an American Mexican instead.
@davidhuff4562

There are new laws now in Jalisco that regulate loud music and other blaring noise. They have just recently started to enforce them & time will tell if effective or not.

Speaking in 2017 after having traveled and lived in numerous areas in Mexico, from working in archeological sites in Palenque, to enjoying the beach life near Acapulco, to actually working in a tourist Hacienda in Tamaulipas, I always felt alive and participated in all that was kind and fun in Mexico, which was most of it, most of the time. I am German by citizenship, but resided legally in the States since 1963. At first it was the Vietnam war which made me realize I couldn't become a citizen yet, although I was married and could have received citizenship automatically through marriage. Then it was war time again for Iraq, then Afghanistan, so I just traveled a whole lot, all by myself, in my VW bug, 30 k all over Mexico. I was 30, I guess pretty good looking and had a personality which really appeals to Mexican people to this day. Presently, the reason I am looking at expat locations is that I absolutely can not accept the present administration and have a loathing of this president Trump, which makes me really depressed on a daily basis. I think about the damage and fear this man is causing every day and every day I want to leave this country. I hope you all are seeing the Vietnam series by Ken Burns? Is it not disgusting how the various administrations have vulgarly led our young men to slaughter in wars, only to stroke the egos of the sitting president. Mexico has it's problems with the drug wars and also pretty severe mesajini towards women, but a new generation of young Mexican women may raise their offspring more fairly to their sexes. The people are good at heart, good hearted but not always grown up, which adds charisma to their character. They are kind to the elderly and always make you feel at home, especially when you try really hard to speak Spanish. As soon as I cross the Mexican border, I felt at home. Even though I am older now, I still have a lot to give and live for and Ajijic sounds like a nice mixture of international people enjoying real life.

Hello fellow St Joseph native. Glad you viewed & enjoyed the video. I truly enjoyed do it. The community to the West is San Juan Cosala & there are now several hot spring facilities that folks can utilize. I've been told some even give the INAPAM (MX Senior) Card discount. I suspect you would see many changes in Ajijic since 2006. We have, moving here in August 2007. I grew up in the area of Bartlett Park & graduated CB High in 1966, so a few years older than you. When we moved back to St Joseph in 1984, we bought a townhouse in Country Squire, so not far from the East Hills division off Frederick & aware of Safari Drive. Hi David, Thank you for a wonderful video! I'd like to know how you found your house, in what neighborhood it is located, where to look for adds and who can give you information about rentals in the area besides a real estate agency. Appreciate your kind words Patricia. As the video said, my wife & I started to vacation in Mexico in 1991 so by our 2007 retirement we knew the area well. A friend in Ajijic directed us to reliable real estate offices here to look for a rental. I had made initial contacts too through rental office ads in the English monthly magazine EL OJO del LAGO. Our rental home is in Villa Nova in the west section of Ajijic. There are a number of bulletin boards around the area where house rental notices are posted. I do suggest you consider a real estate office or rental office rather than renting through a private person unless you are comfortable with Spanish & Mexican law/regulations on home purchases/rental. NEVER try to rent online...physically check-out & the best way to do it is by a visit which is worth the time & expense. Many folks say they couldn't afford the US or Canada but found Lake Chapala affordable & a life pleasure. Any questions??--feel free to email me at HUFFDAVIDR@aol.com & ID yourself in subject line as EXPATS IN MEXICO.

I agree with your thinking Mitzi. My wife & I do that. We patronize a neighborhood family bakery & smell of fresh bread & pastries from their brick oven is a treat to take home still warm. Have favorite Mexican family owned restaurants that are far better in menu, prices & service, so avoid the ones that resemble the US & cater mainly to expatriate clients. Have no fears of not shopping at WalMart, the Mexicans love our WalMart store here at Lake Chapala and aisles are full of Mexican families who appreciate the option of a WalMart SuperCenter.

Thank you for these kind words too. Apparently after 11 years here in Ajijic, I do get a bit passionate when I speak of our good life now. My wife & I both immerse ourselves & at a pace we enjoy & can manage. I was still 58 when we moved here & a 'young' 70 now. I tell folks "mi cuerpo es anciano; mi corazon es joven" (my body is older; my heart youthful). Who is to say what NORMAL is. We think we have a simple normal life & we love it. Come visit that friend & check it out. Be glad to meet you when here if you want. Been to Merida on a visit & it was lovely. Been to 22 of the 32 Mexican states now & have plans to add 3 more in 2019. I did send my email address. Will enjoy hearing from you. - David

The lake has shown improvement. Be it Mexico or the U.S., the environment takes team work by government, groups and individuals to succeed. Music is a big part of Mexico's 'life blood' and what you heard in the video was a crew working on a home behind our house. If it were too quiet here, I think the beauty of Mexico would be lost. Mexico isn't for everyone and music, sometimes loud, is a fact that each person has to determine tolerance.

unfortunately, the lake remains highly toxic as more than 2500 factories upstream dump their chemicals and toxins directly into the main river that feeds the lake. Also the communities along the lake direct dump their sewage into the lake. Many folks who use the lake water have suffered kidney and other damage.

How do Canadians get health insurance for long term stay if they are over 74 years old? How expensive is it? Who offers it?
@davidhuff4562
@davidhuff4562 6 жыл бұрын
It is my understanding that a Canadian or US long term resident with Temporary (not Tourist) or Permanent Visa can qualify for Mexico's universal health plan called Seguro Popular. My wife & I were issued a 3 year policy in 2017 and at NO premium since we were over age 60. Some Canadians we know prefer to remain part-time residents of 5/6 months & use the healthcare plan in Canada. It is a personal preference choice I guess. Before anyone moves to Mexico, it is best to have a prior visit and check out such issues yourself and see how your needs best fit into life here. I'm not sure. There are ongoing efforts. The bigger question is, when will the lakes and oceans of our world be clean? All that said, Lake Chapala is still attractive in its way to enjoy.

hi David I enjoyed watching your interview. I have been communicating back and forth with some people in the Huatulco area and I also like the area that you are living in and I am trying to make plans to retire to Mexico. I'm already retired here in the states 64 years old but my question is if you're an expat don't you have to give up your social security? From the United States? I can't afford to do that as that's all I have to live on plus a small retirement of about $2,000 a month total. I'm a single female it doesn't cost much to feed me so I'm wondering how one can live in Mexico but retain their social security benefits. Do you have any advice on that?
@davidhuff4562
@davidhuff4562 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sherri and thanks for your question. NO...you don't give up your social security as an expat living here. Both my wife and I have collected and lived on our SS benefits since age 62. We applied in the United States but then went through the Federal Benefits Section at the US Consulate in Guadalajara to establish our Mexico residency address. That gave us our monthly benefit paid the 3rd of each month rather than a benefit payment date based on our day of birth. If having your SS direct deposited in a US bank currently, I suggest you keep it that way and use a bank ATM card to access as need rather than having benefits mailed or deposited to Mexico. The US social security office tried to scare us that moving to MX would penalize us or take our benefits, so we went through the consulate to set our address in Mexico...they were great with help. As a single female, you could live comfortably here I think on $2000/month. We as a couple do on similar amount. Feel free to email me at HUFFDAVIDR@aol.com with any other questions/concerns you have. I have others with whom I communicate who are thinking of Mexico to live.

@@sherrifleming456: My pleasure and glad it eases your mind. Huatulco is apparently a beautiful area in Oaxaca & my wife & I were in the capital, Oaxaca de Juarez, and area earlier this year. Mexico is beautiful. Oaxaca was our 22nd Mexican state to visit & we have travel plans to add 3 more of the 32 states in 2019. Keep in mind that Huatulco is coastal and over past 15-18 months there has been earth tremors and tropical storms in the Oaxaca region. Coastal areas tend to be more humid, but then that and maybe a desire to have ocean view is important to you. I can't address "more expensive" there due to expats, but here at Lake Chapala it tends to be slightly more expensive cost of living in Ajijic due to higher expat numbers than in the villages to our east (Chapala) and west (San Juan Cosala/Jocotepec) along the lake's north shore. Do feel free to email any time with questions you may have.

I'm sure that is true. Last estimate I was given, there are 1 million US citizens now living in Mexico and for a variety of reasons at Lake Chapala: good climate; favorable cost-of-living; welcoming and friendly people...to name a few. Mexico IS NOT for everyone and having lived here 13 years now, the people who are most successful and happy living here, are the ones who immerse themselves and become an active part in the community and its customs and traditions. I call it becoming an American-Mexican. It seems to work best if you can put aside the lifestyle up north of the border and adapt to and seek out a new life adventure for yourself. There is more, it seems, that Mexico can offer to those from Canada and the United States, than they can offer to benefit and life of the Mexicans. Thanks for viewing my video and leaving your comment.

The cost of living is beautiful too. Expensive might be determined by where you currently live. Moving here from Missouri, we found it 40-60% less expensive. As the video relates, my electricity bill is $10-12/month. My wife & I do Sunday brunch weekly & for 2 it is usually less than $10 & it's a wholesome & good portioned meal. One's lifestyle needs are a big factor in what your expenses will be. Feel free to email me at HUFFDAVIDR@aol.com if you have any questions or concerns...I'll answer the best I can.

Bill, there was a bit of construction going on that morning. No, noise is not constant, but Mexico is definitely louder than the quiet suburbs of the U.S. and Canada, especially the Centro areas.

Hi Bill...to me, the background could hardly be heard and what was heard is delightfully pleasant. The construction was on a house a block behind us and the music was the normal situation many workers use while working. As Bob Nelson noted in his reply, Mexico does enjoy its celebrations and celebrations include music, often louder than US or Canadian, and skyrockets that often awaken you at dawn. If you found this music and background annoying then maybe Mexico is not for you. -- DAVID HUFF

So here are some things I wonder about Ajijic: 1. If I pulled my 25 foot vintage Spartan Travel Trailer down there, would there be anywhere I can rent land to set it up on? 2. If I have a lot of pets, how would that impact my moving there? 3. What is the situation with free roaming animals there? I've heard there are many starving dogs, is this true? Do they have animal rescue organizations there? 4. Are there younger expats living there or mostly older retirees? I'm not yet in my golden years. 5. What is the status of the lake? I have read that it's very polluted and no longer is safe for fishing and swimming, etc. Some articles are attributing a high rate of Liver failure in Ajijic to the heavy concentrations of metals in the water. Any info is appreciated.

(1) Yes, there would be land you could set the trailer on. I'm not experienced with trailers, but have been told there is a trailer park in San Antonio Tlayacapan, village just east of Ajijic. Might be able to rent other land option too. I do advise you to fly down first & search yourself what you might want/need. You might want to check at a nearby Mexican consulate about the import registration fee for the vehicle & trailer. (2) Having pets should have no negative impact. Again check with a nearby Mexican consulate as to required papers and immunization that will be required to bring them into Mexico. (3) There are free roaming animals at times. Have had cattle grazing in my residential neighborhood. See horses, goats, sheep, chickens roaming along roadside. I'm sure there are abused (starving) dogs here as elsewhere. Many of the street dogs however seem happy/content & not starved. We have a butcher shop in Ajijic Centro that feeds street dogs daily & others tend to their needs too. I carry dog treats in my pocket for street dogs when at the tianguis. There are several animal rescue/adoption organizations here. (4) We have a range of ages of expats. Young families with children here. Even those of us biologically aged act & live a younger lifestyle--I say we don't get old, we just get better. The average age of Mexicans is younger too & to be happy here, you need to interact with Mexicans as much or more than with expats. (5) We are just now ending our rainy season & it has been very good for the lake. Lake Chapala is no more polluted than any lake, stream, pond or even the ocean in the US. People swim, boat and fish on the lake. There may be liver (more likely kidney) failure but it is not necessarily heavy metals in the water. Reports I hear say metal content is more concentrated on the bottom surface of the lake. It's a personal choice whether one wants to swim in the lake. I have no desire. We eat a fair amount of fish & seafood & I don't worry about its origin. Expats often drink bottled water which is not all that expensive here in 19-20 litre jugs. We freely eat tacos and other snacks off street vendor cart at the numerous fiestas & in 11 years, no problems or complaints. We even cook & brush teeth with tap water from the faucet. Hope this answers your inquiry. Please feel free to contact me by direct email, if you want, with any further questions. My email is HUFFDAVIDR@--aol.com--. Thanks -- DAVID

David Huff Thank you SO SO much for taking the time and effort to detail all of this. It is truly appreciated. I will definitely do as you recommend with a trip down and then a visit to the consulate as well as real estate offices. I would love land that my animals have room (though still corraled) and I can grow food. So glad to hear that the street dogs are considered, and that there are animal rescue groups I can volunteer with. I couldn't be happy without being where I can contribute to the animals. I won't be able to expat for a few years yet but when my very influential boss passes (He's 90), here in Phoenix, I will be at an odd age. Too old to get rehired in my field, too young to collect SS. I will have to sell my home of 24 years and relocate to a lower cost of living and, prayerfully, a more peaceful life. Thanks again

You are most welcome. I enjoy sharing info on our Lake Chapala region. As previously said, feel free to contact me directly at my email address if you have further questions or need clarifications. If you live in Phoenix, I suspect there is a Mexican consulate in Phoenix or maybe Tucson. Ajijic might not offer the open land you seem to need, but there is outlying areas like beyond Jocotepec or east of Chapala that might fit your need. You will be welcomed warmly by animal organizations who consistently look for volunteers. I understand the age question. We decided to move when I was a month shy of 59. It worked well with the cost of living here to make it until 59 1/2 to collect retirement funds w/o tax penalty. Once 62, I applied for SS & it alone covers 80-90% of expenses here. We do have a peaceful life environment. Those who can leave the US lifestyle behind and immerse themselves in & adapt to Mexico's customs, traditions, lifestyle seem to be happier here and adjust better. This is not the US and I hope it never becomes "Americanized." I enjoy the fact my wife & I can class ourselves as American Mexicans. Thanks for your reply. - DAVID

@@rickecheverria8052 : I appreciate your right to your opinion. I'm not in denial. I don't swim & have no desire at my age to swim in the lake. I eat fish & not concerned as to where it was caught. It is always encouraging to hear that government or private sources are taking steps to improve more our environment. Last weekend in the weekly newspaper, it showed the Governor of Jalisco stocking the lake with new tiny fish, so apparently no big scare to fish or consume fish from Lake Chapala. I practiced general medicine & after 12 years living here sense my wife and I, and many acquaintances here, are healthier than we were living in Canada or the U.S.. It seems we don't get old here, just better & some don't even show their age. That tells me we have good health and lifestyle & good living environment and I'm not interested in stressing over perceived minor matters. Mexico isn't for everyone. If it stresses you or Lake Chapala gives you safety concerns, then maybe best you don't visit or live here. I wouldn't want you unhappy or stressed-out.

We are an hour south of Guadalajara with abundant good hospitals and university medical schools. We have just broken ground on 2 new small hospitals Lakeside. There is private health insurance or you can enroll in the Mexican government plans. The cost for healthcare allows some to self-insure because it is less expensive than many have experienced north of the border.

Yes, our CFE bill for electricity for 2 months (they read our meter every 2 months here) has consistently run on average 250-350 pesos or at the current exchange rate for USD around US$15-20, so on average that would be around US$10/month. Remember we do not require a/c in our home, so that makes a big difference in the electricity consumption. We enjoy an outdoor lifestyle which eliminates some electricity, but we do have outside security lighting that illuminates the exterior of our property overnight. Cost of living here is remarkable.

As in any locale, there are singles ranging in age from toddlers to seniors. There are expats and Mexicans that are single here in their 50s & 60s. Most expats have come here as retirees so that puts most at the upper edge of that age range. Through the Lake Chapala Society there is an active Singles Group that plans activities. Age doesn't appear very relevant here, we all put age aside & enjoy life. What is most important is to immerse yourself with both expatriates & Mexicans and live life as one community. -- DAVID HUFF

Our 2018 rainy season just began 3 weeks ago and we've had wonderful rains already that have significantly enhanced the lake. There are folks each weekend here in Ajijic that visit and recreate on the malecon and folks tell me the malecon in Chapala is even better attended. To stand and look out over the lake has been a pleasure for us for 11 years now. I'm sure the experts at the universities are always researching ways to improve Lake Chapala, but I could hardly say it is dead.

There are still the numerous mom/pop small stores on almost every block. As my video says, Catherine & I prefer the tianguis in Chapala & Ajijic for fresh fruits, meat & vegetables. I wouldn't want to live here if it was "too developed" either. Want it to remain that small fishing village image with its wonderful people, traditions and customs. I was kind of half joking but yes...in the 70s and 80s we used to drive from San Diego to the Tijuana to shop for food every other week...there was a huge Commercial Mexicana store that was like a sort of Wallmart but yes, a store for Mexicans. Jokes are amusing, so thanks for the clarification. I'm sure the San Diego to Tijuana border is different now than in the 70-80's era. Lake Chapala is significantly different than any of the border region. Best wishes on your "Plan" however it unfolds. I repeat for any expat anticipating to move to Mexico, your adaption to Mexico and happiness rests a great deal on the willingness to change your lifestyle and adopt the Mexican culture, rather than attempt to bring your lifestyle culture & expect Mexico to adopt it.,

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed. As to pronouncing Ajijic, that's a minor factor. Local Mexicans don't seem to care and appreciate the fact my wife and I speak more Spanish, even if off-kilter somewhat, than many of the expats here do. I've been questioned about other words as well...example might be calling our foreign colleagues what might sound as "expates" rather than "expats" but then that again is a minor issue that doesn't trouble me.
