Better than Taipei for living and working - Hualien is located on Taiwan's east coast. And only 2 hours by train from Taiwan's capital city. It is perfect for getting into creative workflow and being a digital nomad.

Hualien, Taiwan is a hidden gem for remote workers, offering a high quality of life and a beautiful natural setting. Located on the East Coast of Taiwan and about a two-hour train ride from Taipei, Hualien is a town of about 100,000 people that offers a variety of amenities for remote workers.

The food of Hualien features some of Taiwan's best
One of the standout features of Hualien is its access to nature and green space. The town is surrounded by beautiful parks, green belts, the ocean, and the mountains of Taroko National Park. This makes Hualien a perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts, with plenty of opportunities to go biking, walking, and jogging. #hualien #taiwan #earthquake
Hualien has a rich history, with a mix of Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese influences.

Hualien is known for greenbelts, parks, and walking paths.
Hualien also scores highly in terms of walkability, with a pedestrian-friendly downtown area and a variety of coffee shops and other places to work from. The town has a good healthcare system, with a number of hospitals and clinics available. There are also plenty of gyms and fitness facilities for those who want to stay active while working remotely. Wi-Fi is widely available, making it easy to stay connected and get work done.

Hualien has some of the best air quality in Taiwan
However, a few drawbacks exist when working remotely from Hualien. One of the main drawbacks is that the ocean is not suitable for swimming, due to its rocky shore and deep drop-off. Additionally, Hualien is prone to earthquakes, which can be disruptive and potentially dangerous.

Taroko National Park is located about 30 minutes from the center of Hualien
There is also not much nightlife in Hualien, which may be a drawback for some people.
Another potential issue for remote workers in Hualien is the noise from fighter jets taking off from the nearby military base. While this may not be a constant concern, it can be disruptive at times. Finally, housing availability can be limited in Hualien, with few options for comfortable or nicely designed accommodations.
Despite these drawbacks, Hualien is still a great place to work remotely, offering a high quality of life and a beautiful natural setting. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or simply want a more relaxed pace of life, Hualien has something to offer.

I lived in Taiwan in 2020. It was great to return to my favorite city, Hualien, and score it as a remote work destination.

花蓮是我最喜歡的城市之一。 在這段視頻中,我將花蓮評為遠程工作目的地。 你最喜歡台灣的哪個城市?

Hualien is a great place, and you make a persuasive argument. However, I can add a couple more drawbacks to living there: 1. Hualien's location on the east coast means it's more exposed to the typhoons that frequently hit Taiwan compared to Taipei and other cities on the west coast. 2. The city's close proximity to the eastern side of the Central Mountains means the sun disappears relatively early in the afternoon.

Thank you for this added info about Hualien. When living in Taiwan for one year the most extreme weather experienced was a tsunami in Kenting. Yet, even that was not so bad.

If I had to choose where to retire in Taiwan, Hualien would be the one. Parts of Hualien make you feel like you’re not in Taiwan. It just looks so much different from the rest of Taiwan. Very good analysis of the topics.I’m going to watch the video again. Savor it. I also like Taitung. East coast is wild and untouched. I prefer living in that part of Taiwan. Enjoy the video👍

Su, yes! Me too, if living in Taiwan my top pick is Hualien. I like Hengchun and Taitung as my close seconds. Thank you for watching.

That being said I do love it here and my goal is to learn Mandarin so I don't mind that people can't speak English. Also I don't know when the last time you went to Seoul is but the last time I was there in July everyone was speaking English I was actually disappointed because I wanted to speak in Korean 😂

My experience in Hualien was English spoken during my day-to-day living, going for coffee, train station, restaurants, doctors visit, or meeting new people. This was not the case in other parts of Taiwan, though. Interesting, I was just in Seoul and found it challenging to communicate. And with Google Maps disabled there, it proved to be an extra challenge compared to Taiwan.

Really interesting series. Do you think China's sabre rattling is just to hurt Taiwan's economy? Empty threats? It was interesting to see the washing machine antique in the cafe was Danish. I wonder how it ended up in Taiwan.

Sebastian, good question. Not sure about the political situation, but I enjoy exploring Taiwan's history, its people, and the east coast in particular. Although, the daily flyovers by fighter jets are a constant reminder of the political tension.

Eddie, my experience was sometimes there was hesitation to speak English out of shyness, but many locals can converse. The service industry in particular.
