Don’t read too much into it. I think Wang was just trying to show how lightly connected all of the characters were to each other.

Show was great. Not exceptional, but great. Wang’s first work, 2018’s The Farewell, is a masterpiece, but this failed to reach that level of tension and drama. Not every character was richly interesting, and episode 5’s feature length runtime gives the feeling of a “I wanted to make this but had to make all of it” type deal. People need to comprehend that not every thread deserves a nice little neat bow on top to seal it away. Wang liked the idea of connectivity, which things like the mop and the protests cemented. They were never major players in the story at hand.

every line in this show by the incredibly flawed & narcissistic characters was basically just the writers preaching their actual politics

This series was fantastic. When Margaret froze at the airport, I cried. The pain of losing a child never leaves you. It was fascinating to see how connected these characters were even when they didn't know it.

Should have found the kid or at least given us an explanation of what happened to him. I know they wanted to make it clear that no one knew if Gus simply walked off or was kidnapped, but it’s frustrating watching all these plot threads without getting an answer to the main question of the show. Why was that local HK woman even in the show in episode 5? I didn’t know who she was and she’s getting all this screen time. I felt the show was set up well, but didn’t give us a good conclusion. It was just a life moves on type of ending and it went into too many directions too late in the show for my taste. New characters should not be introduced in the penultimate episode. The entire series needed to be rewritten with characters removed from the script and a more satisfying conclusion. Margaret could have simply hired private detectives to work on her son’s missing person case and report their findings to the police but it seems like she didn’t think of that. She has no practical way of looking for him and is unlikely to get anywhere by walking around town like that. I didn’t think the disappearance scene was that reasonable. If the boy got lost, he would be found rather quickly. If he was kidnapped, we needed to see who kidnapped him or at least a resolution of some sort. Instead we got nothing.

Soooo disappointed at this show. So many things were unresolved. What happened to the maid -- did she attend the singing contest? Did she win? Who took Gus? What happened to Flora Chan's Character who have 2 daughters and the husband is cheating on her (who mumbles some cryptic message that it was HER set up) and how she was going to leave because she felt lonely? Extremely unsatisfying when you build these seemingly interesting characters who seemed to go somewhere, and then they just vaporized. And what is the actual main message of the show? It just went all over the places with each episode. It seems to be forgiveness in episode 6, but then episode 5 (which is about loneliness? I am not even sure) stuck out like a soar thumb. The show seems to want to say something but it failed. I am also very annoyed it brought up the Hong Kong protests, but just as some frivolous "decoration" in the background. Might as well leave it out completely. All in all, this show is trying to do and say too many things while everything was touched on on a very surface level. Very disappointed.

Can someone PLEASE EXPLAIN to me what was up with the crossed mops outside Margaret’s rented apartment? The camera would always stop at this scene making it feel REALLY important

1) Puri didn’t make the contest because Hillary was too hungover from coping with the death of her marriage to remember it. Puri sacrifices her dreams for her obligations. Part of the theme of that specific episode 2) it doesn’t matter who took Gus, and it would’ve made a trite story to focus on that 3) Flora Chan’s character served as an example of women in her culture coming close to leaving their toxic surroundings only to instead learn to cover up the issue as much as possible and deal with the consequences of inaction (represented by the hole in her ceiling) And 4) the show was primarily about dealing with the consequences of your own actions, exemplified by the opening monologue about people who do things that causes irreparable harm to others as an accident. However, all of those “accidents” were made through bad decision making. Margaret should’ve had Essie come to the market instead of Mercy. Hillary should’ve told her father off and left David sooner. Mercy shouldn’t have been okay with having unprotected sex with a married man. In the end they have all had their moment of realization and learn to take more responsibility for themselves

this series is just unwatchable... especially when you watched it because you are from HOng Kong.... the events are just inaccurate and so many details are just not convincing, if you live in the city you will know. I watch with cringe but still watch it because I want to see what they want to tell using the city's protest as a back drop... in the end.. it was just a back drop, totally not necessary for the show after all

I don't live in HK anymore but I grew up there until teen years. What was inaccurate in your opinion? I was annoyed they sprinkled in the HK protests like it was some romanticized pixie dust, none of the main characters even cared about it except just the occasional "oh the traffic was so bad because of the protests". Almost like a disrespectful slap in the face and it should have been left out completely. And how annoyed I was when they lived in the Hong Kong "peak" side, while the "night market" was in Mong Kok (Kowloon side). One will have to make plans to travel there, minimum half an hour without traffic, yet they make it seem like it was just downstairs as the mom was making accusations of several of their neighbors taking Gus, when in reality that would not be remotely possible unless they were Jeffrey Dahmer level of a stalker. Eye roll.

And that korean gal will hv a job in 2013, the economic back then was pretty good. 5. @@dragongaming12478 I didn't pick up that it was the mom's intention to replace her filipino maid with the Korean girl. I just thought she would be hired as an occasional babysitter when they go out. That would indeed be ridiculous. I assume with the filippino maid, there are complicated insurance and contracts and paperwork protecting both parties. How could you just arbitrarily replace someone with a stranger you met at an event. I do question if anyone would treat their filipino maid so well, letting them wear their night gowns, putting make up on them, and drinking with them? Liking them so much to go through hoops to bring them to the States, and probably have to pay 20x more than what HK people pay for their foreign hired help? And the application go through so quickly with the INS??? I guess I don't know any rich gweilo expats in HK, and only saw the stories of how the (upper middle class) employers abuse their hired help. I do wonder how realistic is that. I do want to say I was very impressed how do they recreate all those CROWDED restaurants / street / occupy central / protest scenes during the time of heightened COVID fear. It was no joke in HK back then, yet they managed to get all those scenes in, and no one wore a mask. I know they allow them pass because of Nicole Kidman but this is quite something. And they allow them to recreate the protest scenes when it is so politically sensitive now? I wonder if it was recreated in Hollywood. That was pretty amazing how do they even pull all of that off.
