Expectations vs Reality of owning a pet bunny rabbit. My bunny DiDi is mostly a very good girl but sometimes she doesn't listen and can be naughty. Although rabbits do have some bad qualities, overall for me they are the best pets. Rabbits are very sweet and loving once they know and trust you. They are also quite clean and don't have much odors. I think their good qualities definitely outweigh the few bad ones.
DiDi says Always Be Hoppy!

For anyone watching, I wouldn't have a corner litter box for a bun with their eating hay separate in a bowl. Get a large cat box and put a XL puppy pad in it using binder clips to clip it to the sides so it doesn't move. then put a layer of either paper bedding or junk hay over 1/2 of the bottom and fill the other half with the hay they eat. Put a lot so you don't have to change it for a day. Bunnies eat while they poop and this will eliminate most of the mess they can make.

This is why parents should NEVER give their children a rabbit as a cute Easter gift. 99.99% of them end up either at a shelter, or just let go "back into nature" where most of them will sadly die. Thanks for making this video. Also your bunny is ADORABLE 🐰😍😊.

Yep, both mine are rescued from being dumped. One in a park with his brothers and sisters, the other in an apartment parking lot with her sister. I think Thurberi (my boy) still has some trauma for it. He was 4 when I adopted him. But Elowen (my girl) was young enough that she was raised at the rescue and only a little under 2 when I got her, so she's much more used to being handled and given attention.

A few things you can be sure of. They will boss you about, tell you if something is out of place or shouldn’t be there in THEIR home (yours). They will creep up on you if they think you’re leaving them & glare at you. They will blank you for 3 days if you do. If you give anyone else more attention than them they’ll let you know. They involve themselves with whatever you’re doing & if you’re looking out the window they demand to know what you’re looking at and want picking up. They beg for your food & will jump on you & block your mouth so you can’t eat without them having some. A rabbit is the boss, you’re just a servant to provide cuddles & food but they will love you deeply if you do as you’re told.

I love my bunnies. For me the only negative is that they will chew or eat things that they are not supposed to. You will have to supervise them when letting them roam around the house keeping things like wires, string, fabrics, house plants and anything else that might be harmful out of reach. You can never truly bunny proof your home because they will find something to chew and eat that they are not suppose too. They will chew your furniture too if its not protected especially the corners. I use a lot of mesh for bunny proofing although some people might say it doesn't look very pretty, clear plexiglass works wonders but a bit more expensive, perfect for protecting your house plants. Rabbits are very easy to toilet train but they will still leave balls of poop around the house no matter what, however rabbit poop don't smell and its relatively clean and harmless. Rabbit urine can smell. Its easy to clean up after them. Getting your rabbits fixed improves many things and generally makes them better house pets. Never breed your rabbits otherwise you'll end up with thousands of them literally. Rabbits will breed very quickly and siblings will then mate with one another... don't do it. Get them fixed. Rabbits are not the most easy to sell and there is no money in rabbit breeding. There are far too many rabbits in shelters. Rabbits don't make noise and are cheap to feed. Do not keep your rabbits in one of those hamster cages no matter what the pet store tells you. Rabbits need space and they are better in pairs. In my opinion rabbits are the perfect pet once you eliminate the negatives which there aren't many.

Agreed, all pets will have some negatives. The rabbit negatives aren’t too many and they have way more good characteristics 🙂.

I'd say they are great for kids, as long as they are responsible. I'm 15, got my bun last year, unlike how most pets that parents get for their kids where the parents end up taking care of it, in this case, they don't have to do anything for him. The issue in reality is, getting the rabbit without doing proper research and self evaluation! Again, in my case, my parents got my bun for my birthday, though, me and my mom went out to get him. It wasn't a surprise gift but something that I was told about and researched to make sure that everything was set up correctly. Pets should NEVER BE SUPRISE GIFTS TO THOSE UNPREPARED! Though dogs don't need THAT MUCH preparation, cats, and especially rabbits do. That is why Easter is so harmful, they think a rabbit is a hamster, when they have needs more similar to cats! Circling back to the great for kids, rabbits can teach kids (Just not small children that aren't self aware yet, basically once they are over ~8-10, depends on the kid though) how to be gentle and responsible. Due to rabbits constant need for hay, the kid must keep tabs on the animal, rabbit waste is really easy to clean up and doesn't have a foul odor either. They are amazing animals that can teach people how ANY animal can have a personality! (as many don't think rabbits do! even though rabbits are sassy ass's)

1. They poop everywere, but after giving them a tray with ‘cat gravel’ - the stuff that lumps together when wet - they ONLY pee there 2. The tray above gives them a place to dig - reducing their ‘need’ to dig in the sofa. An old blanket is also a good toy

This is actually a very, very accurate video, and having raised a few bunnies myself, I can attest to most of these points as being true. They say bunnies can easily be toilet trained, but they can't: I've raised about five different bunnies (at different times, mind you), and in spite of my best efforts to try, none of them could be toilet trained - even if you put their litter pan in wherever they pick their potty spots, they'll just go pee and poop somewhere else. I've also had bunnies who didn't like to be held or played with, but I did have at least one bunny who just the opposite - he _loved_ to be held, cuddled, snuggled, and played with . . . if only more bunnies could've been like him. Another bunny I had was extremely lazy, and would rather flop out than do anything active or engaging. Lastly, yes, bunnies are constant chewers, partly because their teeth grow continuously, so they have to chew to keep their teeth filed down; this is while you have to rabbit-proof your home (if you keep them in doors) much like you would child-proof your home.
@AlwaysBeHoppy

Did you put their hay only in their litter box? I have 2 buns and both potty trained very easily. I would say your experience of having 5 and none being able to box train isn't normal at all. Are/were they spayed or neutered?
@JosephScarbrough
@JosephScarbrough Жыл бұрын
@@Divinestyler22 Honestly, it had been so long, I can't remember if they all were, but I _do_ remember one particular pair of bunnies I had one time, the male was neutered, but we had to wait to spay the female, and . . . well . . . let's just say that she really did knock 'im dead. I just remember because we couldn't train them is the main reason why they had to remain outdoor bunnies as opposed to indoor bunnies.

I pretty much toilet trained my bunnies within days. Bunnies tend to go toilet in the same places so putting a litter tray in the spot they use for going to the toilet is very easy and they will use that. They will always leave balls of poop everywhere but this isn't an issue for most rabbit owners as its dry, harmless and easy to pick up or sweep away. It also makes great plant food. I never have to clean up any pee because they do it in there litter tray.

I’ve had my bunny for a couple of months now and everything you said is true. I wanna cuddle so badly but she’s not having it. Catching her is exhausting and traumatizing for the both of us. She will use her litter box, but not all the time. She is free roaming so she finds other places too. I’ve set up additional litter boxes but she is only using the one. She isn’t taking well to the transition from alfalfa hay to Timothy Hay so I tried orchard and that was a no. I tried Oat Hay and she likes that one but nutritionally, Timothy is still better so im going to keep trying. Food? Yeah, she has literally everything a bunny could want as far as great bunny food, but she wants to eat the carpet, the broom, random pieces of clothing she finds on the floor, and my cat’s dry food. We have to keep a constant eye on her. I love her though. She is gentle, sweet, and just adorable! Watching her grow so fast from a tiny little thing to a big girl bunny has been fun!
@AlwaysBeHoppy
@AlwaysBeHoppy Жыл бұрын
Try sitting on the floor and letting her come to you for petting 🙂. For the hay, mix small amounts of the timothy into the alfalfa. Gradually increase the amount of timothy, that should help her transition. We don’t want to completely change their food at once, they need some time to adjust. Hope that helps her 😊🐰.

As long as the rabbit is spay/neutered, has a big enough litterbox (at least cat sized) and isn't stressed, they're actually remarkably good at using it. Or at least I haven't had to clean up any poo outside the litterbox at all since my two settled in. Though males supposedly poop more, overall. Omg I never thought that people give bunnies as Easter gifts but ya that must be a thing 😮thanks making this video maybe someone sees it and doesn’t get a rabbit. If someone doesn’t have the time and the money and patience then no rabbit for them!! This is an excellent video thanks!!❤

But still your bunny is sooooooo calm and my male rabbit is too much aggressive and he doesn't like rabbit food at all 🙊😹 he only likes vegetable and fruits.... Plz tell me what can i do for him
@AlwaysBeHoppy
@AlwaysBeHoppy Жыл бұрын
Is your rabbit neutered? Neutered rabbits are usually less aggressive, my rabbit is spayed so she is more calm. For food, about 80% of their diet should be timothy hay for an adult rabbit. If you always have hay available for him and have hay in the litter box, he should be eating it. If he's refusing hay, you might need to ask a vet.

I had bunny called Cvrček..... but he died in my hands 17.1.😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭He may was some times little idiot and destructor but... He was amazing.... He was there for me... he liked/loved cuddle/hug (i don't know which 1 is right) with me. He loved when he can be just next to me... i was his modla😂😂😂😂. He just was amazing. That 6 years with him was amazing❤❤. He was smart and loving. He may was be some(a lot to be honest😂)times scaredy cat😂😂😂 but he can be also brave one. I am remembering how good were our friendship. How he loved me and i loved him❤... Also i am remembering when my mom got angry at hi she said to him ,,I will cook you,,😂. Ans he was going hide to me😂😂she meaned it as a joke because she can't hurt ANY creature, but we were laughting at him😂😂. Or when i got angry at him he licked me😂. @@Horse-Lady_cz yes bunnies like to destroy things because they need to chew 😅. If you ever get another bunny, getting them enough of their own bunny safe chew things will help and bunny proof the human stuff. Then the bunnies will be the cutest little angels being very good in the home 🐰🥰. I love smaller bunnies with smaller ears, they are super cute maybe almost the cutest animals on earth 🐰❤️💕
