The perfect rig is the one you have right now, and go explore as far as you can with what you’ve got. It’s not about the gear. It’s about the memories, be they in a V-dub or a Forerunner. It’s always about the memories.

I completely agree, except for one thing. It's 4Runner, or if you want to spell it out, FourRunner, not Forerunner. People spelling it the way you did is why I named my buddies wife's 4Runner the Fore-Skinner lol.

The problem with overlanding vehicles, is that we have changed what overlanding is. The days of carrying a canvas tent in the back of a Land Rover have been replaced with dual battery systems, solar generating systems, Michelin Star kitchens, walk-in campers, and toppers, heaters, AC, Hot Tubs, helicopter pads, and fully tiled washrooms with a bidet and a flunky passing you heated towels. Most Tacomas on the road are grossly overweight, far too many Jeeps are pulling trailers that are too heavy, and the original concept of trail-breaking for overlanding has been replaced with suspension systems that are more suited for a lunar landscape than the semi-beaten path. Far too many people think that a Tacoma is the same as a Hilux and that the 4Runner is as capable as say an Aussie LandCruiser, they are not. The European spec Ranger has almost twice the payload of the North American model depending on trim, engine, and configuration. When you add anything to your vehicle that increases the weight, every pound added must be deducted from you GVW. People think that 250lbs.of suspension upgrades just increased their payload, and what they have actually done is decrease it by 250lbs. You CANNOT increase your GVW. How many Tacomas do we see with Four Wheel Campers, Alu Cabs, Kimbo's or other brands that weigh pretty much what the payload maximum is, or beyond, and they haven't added their gear, their fuel, or themselves yet? A 12v fridge, power station, folding solar panel, and a tent and some camping gear is all you need. RTT's are heavy and every time you want to drive you have to take it all down...I am not against comforts while camping, but many Overlanders are glamping to the tenth degree, and their vehicles are just way too heavy. People need to remember that if you're too heavy off-road, that presents problems, if you're too heavy on the highway going to the trail, you're putting yourself and everyone else on the road at risk.

Definitely agree with the sentiment of "the one you already own and can get you out there". My choice? 2010 Raptor 6.2 with a Gazelle ground tent/folding mattress, Waterport, and Jackery/solar panel/12v fridge. I typically do 2 week trips where I set up a base camp for about 3 days, which keeps the truck nimble for exploring--not to mention I don't have to set up a rooftop tent every night. It isn't a pure rock-crawler and occasionally I get some desert striping on the sides, but it will handle most of the trails in Moab and overland as well as anything else. Plus, it's incredibly comfortable and let's face it--we all put more highway miles on these than we would like.

I love the fact that you guys take the time to explain all of the crazy gear that we overlanders think we need. I really like the fact that you guys cover all the bases that we out here in KZfaq land could be trying to cover as well. I would like to see more DIY stuff but I understand sponsorships and running a business like you’ve developed is difficult. And by the way I really miss Oh hey there with Jeff! The old crew was fantastic and it’s what got me into “overlanding” Maybe you guys should do a throwback episode even if it’s just camping close by. I really admire you and I’m glad I stuck with this channel from the beginning.

The overlanding community as a whole, while logical in the intent, just seems like a bunch of dudes spending every spare dime on depreciating assets, and all spare time researching “gear” for that dopamine hit of the box showing up in the mail, which is an itch that can never quite be scratched.

Life is a journey. Some people choose to work, save money, get rich and die. Some choose to make money and spend money to explore new adventures. Some are able to keep balance, some don’t. At the end, we all die, but before we die, old memories will come back for us to smile one last time or regret what missed. For me, these guys are living interesting lives, full of connections and memories. Cheers.

I've tried them all shown here short of the van life, for now I've settled on the built 200 and I couldn't be happier. It works for hunting/fishing, hauling adv/dirt bikes, light to medium towing, comfortable over the road/highway travel, and of course just general off-roading all with plenty of power and room. As I age and my interests and needs grow and change so will my demands from a vehicle. I love traveling on two wheels as well and for the foreseeable future my 200 Series and 500 thumper will handle most of my needs. Great video guys, more of this.

Cool video! I think one mistake a few people make is overestimating the length of time they will spend in their rigs. I keep thinking I want a full pickup bed camper, but in reality it will be rare if I have two nights in a row in the truck. With that in mind I have settled on building a truck bed camping setup, have an RSI Smart Cap on the way and I'm building a set of drawers/frame to form a base for the mattress. I currently have a roof top tent on a rack above the bed (canvas style from Thule) but the setup/pack down time is quite annoying as you can't keep your bedding in it, and if you get a windy night you can be sure you won't sleep very well.

Someday plan to get out there on an ADV bike (I'm 5'6" so the inseam challenge is real, but that's just an excuse) Just got myself set up with a 2018 4Runner, my first 4WD and first large vehicle that I've ever had to myself. It has been AWESOME even just getting into the forest service roads and fire trails with my 2-year-old baby daughter and her mom. We love seeing the animals and trees from the comfort of this awesome and cozy machine. Plan to get even more adventurous soon! Let's get out there! You don't need much, we've got a tent, a truck and some sleeping bags... should be more than enough to make memories with! :D

Done trips is a built 4runner, built-out van, and a bone stock tundra with a camper shell- all hauling a family of 4. It all comes to to picking your compromise. For us, the trips got better when we gave up some off road capability in exchange for comfort and space. Space is important because it lets you organize your gear so that it is convenient and easily accessible- which is HUGE. That first trip in the 4runner was stressful. We looked cool, but everyone I opened the back hatch I was treated to an avalanche of gear. Not fun trying to repack that every day. The van was a world better, and the Tundra strikes a good middle ground.

The perfect vehicle is going to be as different as the people that drive them. What would be the perfect vehicle for one person can be completely wrong for the other. There is definitely something to be said about a certain type of vehicle or even type of build that will meet the necessities better than something else may but there is also a enormous amount of gadgets and gizmos out there in the overlanding world that IMO or completely unnecessary but the world in society would tell you that you have to have them To be one of the cool kids. I do appreciate hearing from these guys and other companies that it’s not about all that but getting out and making memories and while I don’t mean to be condescending that is a little bit hard to take in when it’s coming from guys standing in front of 10 different vehicles at their disposal that are all pretty much outfitted to the nines🤷‍♂️ To be completely fair I am sure there has been a tremendous amount of hard work and other things behind the scenes that we don’t see that play into all this but it seems to me that I hear that statement or something similar to it from people that seem to always be showing you their big fancy overland rig and all the gear they have but then want to tell you that none of that matters it’s about getting out there and making memories. When you drive a 20+ year old vehicle or camping out of a ground tent to using an old Coleman cooler it doesn’t seem resonate the same.

As many will say, it’s not about the gear so much as it is the memories and the driver. There’s a popular camping spot here on O’ahu and is arguable the toughest off-roading you will ever see on this island for cars to legally go into. A damn lifted Honda Fit has made it up. A Ford Eacape can get there. So don’t think you need a crazy badass 4 Runner or GX470 or Tacoma or Super Duty. Know your limits but push them from time to time. Enjoy!

Clay & Tanner: Well done. I agree there is no "One Size Fits All, when building your Overland rig. Most people forget about GVWR. All of the sudden they find out they are grossly overweight. I will be building an Overlander built on either a 3500 or 5500 4x4 dual cab frame. I started out with a "Troopy" in mind. Where I am, roof top conversion is illegal . Next was a Hilux 4x4 dual cab diesel with an Alu-cab canopy camper. Due to GVWR, and the fact that removal isn't easy, this isn't going to work. That was rejected. This is an Overlander. Moab rock crawling is a No-Go. I won't be breaking the world's land speed record either. Travelling @ 90 kph gets me the best fuel milage. The "Habitat" will sit on the frame & will be removable. A van conversion was considered but rejected because if you get into an accident, you loose both mobility & your home. I have been following you for awhile. I love your content.

Love the Toyota brand but I just can’t spend & wont $75-150k on a truck and upgrades. I have an old Jeep ZJ and a Yukon which are perfect for my needs and uses. I’ve spent nearly 30k off-road miles on the past 3-5 years.

Best overland vehicle? One you can get parts for anywhere in the world. 12 valve cummins....boats,pickups,buses,generators, and other. Dana 60 and Dana 80.... Plenty of parts....

It may not be up your ally but I’d love to see a overland side by side build. It would be a good filler between the bikes and smaller suvs

The perfect rig is the one parked in your driveway. In my case it’s a 2022 Frontier Pro-4X. Love watching this channel for inspiration.

There is a perfect rig the same way there is a perfect camera - the one in your hand now - in the moment it matters. Also I would accept 1997 LX450 Triple Locked as an answer.

Tacoma cannot handle an Alu Cab, not enough payload.
