Join us on a new Expedition Efteling as we look at the iconic history of Python. The rollercoaster was first controversial but ended up saving The Efteling and paving the way to transform the park into the one we have today.

The almost big accident at 9:25 wasnt anything to do with the coaster itself if I recall it correctly, it was caused by starting the evacuation at the rear part of the train, and the heavier front part pulling the train through the small drop.

Correct. Evac procedures have changed since and now include securing the train to the ride structure to ensure it cannot move during evacuation.

As a dutchman living near the efteling, the python was synonimous with rollercoasters in general and always set a bar for schoolchilderen to dare each other to ride it. It has so much history even tough it is quite a small coaster

So true! Dutch too. Python was my first 'adult' roller coaster back in the early nineties. My mom loved the coaster and took me with her. I was tall for my age, and still remember going through those loops quite well. Coming out of it I remember being both in awe and a bit scared, adrenaline pumping, but so proud I did it. Good memories.

As a Dutchmen myself I really enjoyed this episode. I come here at least once a year with my family and although there are faster and longer coasters in the park nowadays, the Python is still one of my favorites. The only thing I miss about it now after the refurbishment is the "clickclack" when the trains are chained up.
@Thestuffnope
@Thestuffnope Жыл бұрын
That would be the anti-rollback. Along the whole length of the lift hill, there are teeth like groves that a hinged piece of metal, connected to the underside of the trains, fall into and then lock into place if the train where to somehow roll back. that familiar "clickclack" sound is the hinged pieces of metal, called "dogs", clanging and bouncing off of the teeth. Nowadays more modern coasters have more sophisticated methods of anti-rollback.

Glad to see the Efteling still reaches international attention. It's almost criminal how it usually has one of the shortest queues out of all the rollercoasters! It's super immersive, but go on an "off" day. Look up Dutch school holidays when planning, or else you'll be stuck in disgusting wait times for the good rides. Meanwhile on off days, especially in winter/autumn, you can probably go on all the rides in a single day! The python isn't really impressive if you didn't ride it for the first time in elementary school after being dared by classmates, but it's still good fun! Baron and dragons are really good as well (blue dragon is the best one I will die on this hill), and there's loads of areas that are just amazingly themed that have no rides in them where you can just walk around and cool down before the next ride. Also, try to get a dutchie to come with you. Everyone has great stories. I, for one, have gone on droomvlucht every single time I've gone, and I have never been on it without it breaking down at LEAST once. Usually with my cart stuck behind a tree so I can't see shit. Everyone I've been onto droomvlucht with has since been infected with my bad luck. The ride itself is kinda boring but it just makes me laugh so hard so it's an 11/10 for me

I remember riding this as a child. It was one of my first large coasters (though not the first) and I absolutely loved it. It was also really quiet in the park that day, and the operator just told the few people on the train to signal him if they wanted to get off. If not, he'd let it roll right through for another go. I made so many rounds that day, haha! Fun to see it covered here.

I was a teenager who was afraid of heights when this rollercoaster opened in the Efteling. My friend and I where wanting to do the attraction but only at the end of the day so if I got sick the whole day wasn't ruined. When we sat down we where told they where filming the attraction (not sure it's purpose). If we didn't want to be on film we should leave. No one objected and my first ride I had my eyes firmly closed. I survived the ride and when we arrived back in the station they asked if we wanted to go again. Everyone cheered and although one ride was enough for me I was too embraced to raise my hand. Fifteen rides later, eyes wide open, hands in the air, I found my love for rollercoasters.

I always love going to the Efteling, so it's really cool to see it featured in an international video! I've ridden the Python when it had the 'bad' trains, the new ones, and most recently I've been on the remade track. When I first rode it, it was one of the first rollercoasters I'd been on, so young me was quite disappointed with how rough and painful the ride was. I'm glad to hear it was a common complaint, and not just tween me! After the trains got replaced, I went again, which was better, and especially with the new track, it has become a very enjoyable coaster! Though I personally prefer the Efteling's other coasters more, due to their more extensive theming.

@Expedition - I am a huge fan. I'd like to make a humble suggestion: If you have not done a video on the Volcano at Kings Dominion I think it would be great. The ride is no longer around as far as I know. However it was a very fun blast coaster. In fact, it was my first. Nostalgia aside it had quality theming and a rather thrilling experience. The launch was almost immediately after the station and as a suspended coaster it made brilliant use of the inverted reveal where the ride inverts to a panoramic view of the park. When the ride was working there was a splendid fire effect at the top of the actual volcano and you blasted past it. Indeed you could feel the heat from the flames, more than is probably permitted in 2022 safety standards. I can only speculate after 30-40 rides on it but the downfall was likely maintenance cost. The downtime became quite extensive towards the end of it's life and an evident issue with the trains safety system / block zones often brought it down.

10:39 The idea of Python + that came up again was considered but didn’t make it because Python was declared to nostalgic to make such a large change, and because the Efteling didn’t want to make a non-themed coaster any larger. Not because of budget reasons.

It has a nice short layout. Reminds me of the Arrow corkscrew models, but given a little more room to breath between and after the inversions. Which seems to be towards its benefit.

Python is from the Arrow-Vekoma collaborative period. It IS the corkscrew model. Specifically the MK1200 variant.

It’s funny how an American theme park that had a European theme would serve as inspiration for another theme park in the real Europe.

My mum bought us a trip around 4 theme parks for my 10th birthday, it included Walibi, Efteling, Disneyland in Paris and the Asterix Park. I was tall as hell for a 10 year old, so since I could get on rollercoasters, that was my main focus. I remember thinking Efteling and Disneyland were the more boring ones, even though I absolutely loooved Python (and we rode it way too many times), but I didn’t really remember anything else except that Efteling was a lot more about the magic forest theme than thrilling attractions. Now I’m thinking I’d love to go again, not only because they have more attractions than they did 10 years ago, but just because I don’t think I was able to appreciate it enough back then (and also when you’re on an organised trip to theme parks and you get just one day in each it’s hard to really see everything, so any rollercoasters were more important for me than anything xd). So yeah, I actually miss it and i’m glad it’s getting better with time

Great video, I was glad to see this beauty rebuilt, still glad they did so. Fun thing is that you can get a diploma after your first time, a "Python Diploma". The new tracks are not French, though. They've been made in Belgium by CSM, who also made new track pieces for the Flying Dutchman a few years ago. One of the reasons that they didn't go for Python Plus with the rebuild is because the original plans are no longer possible: The Flying Dutchman is located where some of the track would be situated, making the plan no longer possible.

My fondest memories of Python is how is would get stuck on the lift hill almost every single time we went on it. Also Vogel Rok used to absolutely BLOW my mind. First inside roller coaster I ever rode. God I should visit efteling again, its been over a decade.

Pretty cool that they rebuilt it instead of scrapping it. I feel like most places would junk the old in favor of the "new hotness". But seriously why did they need to change the trains so much? Did they wear out? Getting trains with over the head restraints that don't batter your head around is a tough challenge, I can't imagine why anyone would try to do that so many times. Still looks like an Arrow coaster, pretty reminiscent of Demon at Six Flags Great America (which started with two corkscrews, and had two vertical loops added later).

I'm not sure of the exact reasons, but I'm very happy that they did - I have ridden Python many times over the years, and the current trains are incredibly comfortable, far more than the previous ones! They're pretty much my favourite of any rollercoaster trains in any park now, followed closely by the ones on Joris en de Draak.
