@@brandonconway4822 1. Tod is using heavy-weight longbow arrows which are more difficult to break than most recreational sporting arrows. 2. the shield isn't a "hard" target(at least not for war arrows). Arrows break when the aren't given enough time to transfer the KE they are carrying into the target, causing the arrow shafts to absorb the shock themselves. See his tests on steel cuirass. Many of those shafts broke or shattered.

Plexi or lexan might not be a bad idea bulletproof glass not so because of the way it is designed to dissipate the energy of a bullet that deforms on impact not like a solid piece of iron or steel that does not deform. Maybe something like a trench periscope made from mirrors and square down pipe if you can get it to focus. It reminds me of a story from Uni my friend's reenactment group were working on prince of thieves when some of them witnessed an argument between the archery expert and location director (or equivalent) because they wanted a shot of an arrow coming directly towards the camera. They had a remotely operated camera behind bulletproof glass the archery expert said he did not want to do it as the arrow would go through the glass and the director argued the glass was good for stopping a rifle round something a .308 or 7.62mm. Again the expert said he did not want to do it, but they persuaded him in the end. Of course the arrow went through the glass and into the camera. The expert then went on to explain that hardened steel arrow heads are armour piercing and don't deform like a lead bullet which is what the glass is designed to stop.

Tod, your videos are awesome. I am immensely entertained and educated by them. I'm sure you have many further episode ideas, but let me add mine. What I would love to see on your channel is some draw weight vs string displacement charts for your various bows and crossbows, modern and medieval. That is, not just comparison between bows, but also measurements of string displacement for a given bow when applying gradually greater weights. From the area under this curve the the physical work of the archer while drawing the bow can be estimated. This would also allow you to calculate the mechanical efficiency of each bow, i.e. what ratio of the work the archer puts in is converted to the arrow's kinetic energy. It would be super interesting to compare traditional bow, crossbow and compound bow efficiencies. Another nice thing would be to find bow/arrow combinations with roughly the same kinetic energy but different momentum (or the other way round), and compare penetration like that.

Tod, always look forward to your latest but I was (for reasons I didn't mention while posting on the now-baby-brother for want of not seeming negative) overjoyed to hear you'd re-calculated the 'baby' at c. 75 lb. 120 lbs is definitely an important benchmark to test. But, without going into detail, before the true 'war-bow' of 120lbs+, 70-80 lb is an educated guess as to the weight of militarily employed bows, so please keep testing the smallest alongside: it will illuminate some 300+ years pre-Crecy! The best make mistakes, and the best's mistakes are often the best mistakes :) As ever, appreciation and keep up the great work!

Last time a camera was shot, I suggested an Arrows Vs. Glass series to determine how thick a piece of glass needs to be to protect the camera. Another suggestion that came up at the time was to put the camera in an impenetrable steel box with the opening at right angles to the direction of fire, and use a mirror to get the shot. That way the worst sacrifice would be a cheap bit of mirror. On the relative performance of the bows, it is impressive that the lower energy projectiles did penetrate as far as they did. It goes to show that a longbow is an effective weapon over a range of draw weights.

You could set the camera perpendicular to the firing line (set back aways) and then have a angled mirror (where the camera was placed before) so you could record the reflection of the shot. Also RIP gopro and great video as always Tod.

Kinetic Energy = 107.648 J Momentum = 3.712 kg·m/s Based on what you said about Joe Gibb's 130 pound bow, it would be outputting 5.5 more joules than the Little Brother and 0.1 more kg·m/s.

@@tods_workshop it's easy for us armchair buffs to call out what's best. I appreciate you putting your hear on the line for us. It would be great if you had a paypal account or something that we could throw in on a replacement for you. I can't afford to buy you another one, but I'd be happy to chip in. I bet lot's of people would.

What about the arrows? Part of the reason why the extremly thick arrows were intended for a heavy warbow is because they would have shattered the moment the string was let loose. With lighter warbows this might not be neccesary. Perhaps they used lighter arrows for the smaller bows, maybe even simular to the size of hunting-arrows but with war-tips. You could perhaps do a few experiments using lighter arrows with your lockdown-longbow-light and see how they compare

People were shooting very light arrows from very powerful bows entire time. Particularly Ottoman Turks, where flight shooting to achieve longest possible distance was kind of national sport. You just need properly made arrows. AFAIR binding the nock with sinews or other tough string would be sufficient.

If you ever run out of medieval things to shoot at, I've got another idea. Someone posted a picture on Facebook with someone wearing an armor made of an old tyre. That would be kind of interesting to shoot i think

Well at least we know that GoPro's are not a suitable form of armour if we find ourselves in a dystopian future where all that's left are Vloggers and crossbowmen. Today was not a total waste

100mm of angle iron in front of the go pro like a plough. It might help deflect arrows either side and not damage the arrow or the go pro. If it's good enough for a medieval helmet it might work for a go pro.

To expand your chart a bit, the kinetic energy for each set of equipment is BB = 72 joules LB = 109 j BB = 129 j using the formula k = 0.5 * v^2 * m where k is in joules, v is in meters/sec, and m is in kilograms. This measure should be much more aligned to the damage/penetration on any given target.

The only thing missing in this video is "The Meat Target": Leather jacket skin, pork chop pectoral, pork ribs, bag of oranges lung tissue, more pork ribs on the back, all covered with 4 layers of t-shirts on the front and 4 layers of t-shirt on the back.;) I wonder if 30 layers of fleece would work as an arrow-stopper, though.

You made some clean shots into an area of the shield that was not damaged before. Could you do the same thing with the Gopro Hero 7 that you already shot? Just to see how it handles other arrow heads. But I gess it is not worth breaking the handcrafted arrows.
