A simple message, but one heart felt, that the one handed swords sometimes get over looked today and they are a beautiful type of sword. They would have been the most common type of sword back in the middle ages.

So many beautiful Type XVIIIs! Great video! I'm always trying to impress on people how much more widely used one-handed swords were compared to longswords. Even in the Late Middle Ages when the longsword was in its heyday, arming swords were STILL the most popular by far.

A video on the Sword of St Maurice would be nice. Or a discussion on the type XI/XIA in general. That transition between "viking" and "high medieval" style is really interesting. And the sword itself is unique too, the weight distribution, length, and intended usage as a heavy cavalry cutting sword almost makes it feel like a proto cavalry sabre vs anything else. My first sword of yours and a really fun one to show off!

Every time a friend sees my sword collection they go right for the long swords. I think it's partly the katana/tachi influence on our American pop culture via anime and video games. When is the the last time we've seen a hero with a shield? When heros do have shields they wear them on their backs like a turtle and use a longsword 🤦

Do y'all offer any kind of brass treatment on hilt furniture? I have the misfortune of rusting the hell out of most steel I touch. Even bluing doesn't help.

Great vid Craig .. did you know Nathan was lurking at the back of the shop? But a question when discussing these and long swords is there a rule of any sort ie blades over x inches are long swords or is it the length of the hilt or a combination of hilt and blade length? What is the practical limit of blade length for a one hander 33, 34, 35 36 inches? Thank you for the presentation always interesting!

Good question and tough to answer in the general sense. The longer the blade the more leverage it has in opposition to your hand. The hilt weight helps to compensate but if it increases to much the sword gets to heavy to be functional. Thus the balance of different characteristics need to be combined, if blade length is the factor you are trying to maximize then the blade shape and design need to be adjusted to help. So if its not a rapier but a cross hilted sword you are probably looking at something in the 38 ish range as a max functional length but this would be an odd bird. Most are going to be in the 33-34 range or shorter.
