Great video of this route, again sad that covid19 has decimated pax numbers, lets hope this gets back to some kind of normality very soon. Loving all the route information you put out. I have travelled along this railway, fantastic scenery throughout. The rail museum at Mürzzuschlag is a gem, well worth a visit. First time on the railway for me in my country since March, got a belated trip to Poland planned for the Autumn, looking forward to getting back on the rails properly. Stay safe, and thank you for sharing.

I did the about the same route inside Austria just now before spike in second wave of coronavirus infections. The train was pretty crowded and not everybody decided to wear masks. They have audio guide in German if you open train WiFi and follow on the map. Track is forested and is a bit hard to enjoy the views, but there is a 14.2 km hiking trail from Semmering station to Klamm-Scottwien station. Takes about 4h according to hiking book. That could be pretty adventure for railfans.

This railway line is operated in left hand and right hand operation, a unique feature of the Semmering line.

Not really. All multi-track lines in Austria are equipped for running in both directions on any track (you may notice that there are signals on both sides) - and this is also used extensively by the dispatchers, e.g. for overtaking slower trains on the fly. On the Semmering line this is especially handy, as the line requires constant maintenance work and is only fully operational on both tracks for about 100 days in a year. The lines do have a "nominal" running side though (which historically was on the left on the Südbahn line, but is currently converted to the right hand side like in the rest of the network). But this is mainly important for signage in the smaller stations, to point passengers to the correct platform.

Apparently Czech fees for using their lines are a lot cheaper than German ones, which is why the NightJet to Berlin goes via Prague. There's a good video about it somewhere.

So if half Austria's long-distance trains run on this line, but the line will shut down in 2026, where will they run? And is the shut-down permanent or temporary?
@doc7austin
@doc7austin 3 жыл бұрын
they will run through the newly-built Semmering Base Tunnel
@stephanweinberger
@stephanweinberger 2 жыл бұрын
The line will not be shut down. But the Semmering base tunnel between Mürzzuschlag and Gloggnitz was scheduled to open in 2026; that recently slipped to 2028, because of construction difficulties due to unexpected rock formations and water ingress. So from 2028 most Intercity and especially the freight trains will bypass the mountain line and go through the tunnel underneath. The mountain line will remain open for local trains though (and as a bypass if the tunnel needs to be closed for maintenance). Also, the Unesco heritage status prohibits abandoning it anyways :-) Having most traffic removed from it will also greatly reduce maintenance on the old line. Currently there is repair work for about 250 days per year somewhere along the line, as it wasn't constructed to cope with today's traffic volume and train weights. E.g. the rails only last for about 15 years until they are worn out in the tight curves (on other lines the rails typically last at least twice as long), so the cost of keeping it open will also drop significantly once the tunnel is finished.

It has nothing to do with the coronavirus. There is a Slovenian restaurant car, but it often breaks down. It's a part of very troubled series made by Goša (Serbia) in 1990, we call them the "Mimara" cars. And it's the only one on SŽ. There is, however, a replacement restaurant car "Lisičkina Restavracija" without air conditioning, rebuilt from the older compartment car, but it looks like it wasn't available on this ride.
