The US tested a nuke like this once. They dug a vertical shaft, dropped in a nuke, and boom. They wanted to try and see if they could get the data they needed without destroying the surrounding area. The funny thing is, they stuck a metal plate over the hole so no one would fall in. In essence they created the worlds most powerful gun. A nuclear powered gun.
