That, and he used regular Coke instead of diet. Aspartame, the artificial sweetener in Diet Coke, is a major driver of the cascade reaction. (For that matter, so is the rough surface of the mint Mentos, which is why using the fruit-flavored ones at the same time doesn't help.)

Yeah, this only works with diet drinks that have aspartame, anything else and it's not gonna really do anything. The carbonation actually doesn't matter all that much. The fruit mentos will work but it has to dissolve the outer layer of the candy before it starts to react which makes it a delayed and not simultaneous reaction. Yeah so with either of those things not correct was going to make it not work right, but both meant it wasn't going to do much if anything.

Normal coke bottles erupt so high because all of the bubbles are concentrated into the bottleneck. Because the square of glass was so open, it didn't go nearly as high since the coke had room to move.

I love these videos, if I’m honest, but to be fair we get it - mentos and coke make fizz. And also, in one of the other videos, sprite proved to be more effective, so why not try sprite instead of coke lol ...

Had you not moved it from the bottle to a balloon you would have kept the carbonation needed for the explosion. Try pour it in the tank next time

When you take soda out of the bottle, its concentration of carbonic content would be reduced, so it's less effective when transferred (since most molecules of CO2 would evaporate)
