This is my first attempt at trying to make an iron aluminum bronze. I want to make the hardest bronze I can for a blade. I also want to be able to heat treat it for strength so I also need a specific ratio of copper and iron in it for that.
This is the video that inspired this idea. • How to make Cast Iron ...
If you have done this let me know what I am missing I’m sure there is a lot I can do better.

The C954 aluminum bronze I use to make axe blades has a slight attraction to magnets, but it also has a small percentage of iron in it. I do not believe it would be magnetic otherwise. I look forward to seeing you try heat treatment hardening with your diy alloy! That is something I have always wanted to try with the purchased alloy I've been using. If only I had a controllable kiln... However, aluminum bronze blades will still work harden quite well with a bit of peening. Try dropping one of your ingots on a cement floor or hitting it with a hammer. Watch out for shrapnel though; if you have too much aluminum in it, it will be so hard and brittle that it shatters like glass!

I will try to test the brittleness they way you said. I have wondered what is stronger, work hardening or heat treating? I can’t find a thing online about it.

Cast iron Is usually steel. The carbon content is higher than most steel alloys. Cutting the iron into smaller pieces may help them melt easier

The alloy mix with iron should yeild good results for being heat treatable and tempered. Never tried it myself. Plain-jane AlCu is still a useful, extremely hard alloy. Great video.

I'm amazed your furnace didn't melt into a puddle haha Would love to try gas furnace one day, they look a lot more fun than the small electric one I use!

Interesting stuff. All I can say is when they make steel, they throw the alloying elements in last. You might need to melt the iron, then add the copper, then the aluminum right before you cast. Stirring might help. Good luck dude.

My furnace doesn’t reach temps high enough to melt the iron. But similar to when salt dissolves in water, The iron should dissolve in the copper. That’s the theory anyway.

@@lundgrenbronzestudios I get super high temps with mizzou 3000 castable refractory and a “ribbon” burner with tiny nozzles in the burner instead of straight holes. Sairbond is the only way to fly as far as mortar and for investment casting. Just my 2 cents.

@@lundgrenbronzestudios kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grOEmb2bnNynXWg.html Salt in water is an ionic bond and iron, aluminum, and copper is a metallic bond. Those two processes work differently.

Another example of things dissolving I’m metal is silicon. I can’t reach melting point of Silicon. But I can dissolve it in molten copper.

To quench harden aluminum bronze you make sure it’s over 15% by weight no need for the iron

At over 15% aluminum, doesnt the hardness increase how brittle the alloy is?

To lower the melting point of iron so you can accomplish this at home simply add phosphorus

Al Bz should NOT be ferrous (magnetic). BUT the max ratio you're supposed to mix it is 90% Cu / 10% Al, otherwise it gets brittle as heck.

@@lundgrenbronzestudios was wondering- I use a "propane tank" furnace similar to yours and currently have only gone up to a 6kg- I'll have to try 1 size up!

Yeah, it depends on how thick your insulation is in your tank. I have just enough room to make the #4 work.

ok, can we promote the ONLY one american youtuber who said it outloud? METRIC SYSTEM IS EASIER! :P switch to celcius instead of farentheit and that would be all ;) (as for lbs you too prolly saw on others channels they just slap other measirung system values on screen, and you clearly know how to do notes on screen :) )
