Update: The plant is still “alive” and looking good, but no growth. So I decided to pull it out, and check to see if their was any roots forming. None! ☹️ It was worth a try, but I’m still bummed!

I accidentally broke off part of my dahlia when I was deadheading and I had a start pot with soil close by so I just stuck it in there thinking maybe I could still at least enjoy the existing bloom to flowering etc and it grew roots after several weeks and now I have whole other tuber based plant. I hope it grows great tubers for me to over winter. I think you should try it again with some rooting hormone and indirect light. Maybe even scrape the stem a bit.🤷🏻♀️ Maybe it needs to be new growth or something. I appreciate this video! I’m going to look for your rose propagation video now!😍

Hi!! Wanted to find out if you are still continuing your experiment and how it is going? I had a beautiful stem get snapped by strong winds and I am hoping I can salvage it since it does have a flower bulb coming out.

Yes peonies are a little different from most plants and I think you would need part of a tuber/rhizome/crown. one thing I always had trouble propagating was roses, tried all the methods shown on youtube but the only one that working for me was running a mister for a couple hours a day right on the cuttings. Last season I got several rose cutting from this method. Just a thought.

🌼Disclaimer🌼 This is an experiment. Online it says to “properly” propagate a peony plant you should dig up part of the root called a tuber. The tuber has eyes on them that the new roots will grow from. I wanted to try it this way that I showed in the video to see if it would even work. So I do plan on doing progress videos! I’ll keep you guys updated. Hopefully it works 🤗💜

I've rooted rose plants the same way. I suggest you not place them in the sun at all. I place my rose cuttings in potting soil as you but with rooting hormone and putting it outside in a shaded area. The sun will dry out the leafs too soon. How you know your cutting is doing fine is by lightly tugging on a leaf. I would have gotten the stem wet and rolled it in the rooting hormone and with something put a hole in the soil so when you put cutting in soil you're not disturbing the rooting hormone you added. After placing cutting in hole push dirt against the cutting to cover it all without leaving air pockets. And then water right away and place outside in an area that doesn't get direct sun. Goodluck

Best way is to cut some of the tuber/roots and replant elsewhere. Leaves, stems or seeds not usually successful with peonies. Treat them like ornamental grass.. Divide every few years and replant.

You should’ve put this in a shady location and put a clear vented dome over the plant. Usually dividing the tubers are best with at least 3-5 eyes on each rhizome.

@asmrhousemouse3157 Жыл бұрын
To propagate peony you need to divide the root in the fall. You want at least 3 eyes on each section. Bury shallow, too deep and it won't flower. Will not bloom the first year after division

Great job cutting the leafs in half then the plant uses all its energy in roots as opposed to making the leaves bigger I would’ve put a plastic a water bottle cut in half over the top of the plant, leaving the cap off for a little air and I probably would’ve dipped the stem in some rooting hormone first natural or store-bought

I recently got a peony plant from a local Gardner. Today when I replanted it I noticed that it had thin roots but no tubers at all. Then I realized that such plants will remain green but will never give a bloom. I feel cheated but I don't mind keeping the plant as it is. Hope I had seen this video before. :(
@pershop49502 жыл бұрын
I think it could mean that your peony plant was still too young. Keep it another year or two and it'll create tubers as well as flowers. Once it has many eyes , you can split up the tubers and make different plants out of it, keeping at least three eyes per division.

I grow tree peonies, itohs and the herbaceous. Years ago I had come across an article that it works with itohs (cross between tree and herbaceous), Claimed it was done in the fall by cutting the stems back, wrapping them up in damp newspaper and put the cutting (wrapped in the newspaper) in a refrigerator. I think putting it in a gallon sized plastic bag would keep it moist. Maybe increase the odds with rooting hormone. One thing that made me think it's possible with itohs is the refrigeration. Tree peonies grow their roots over the winter, so I thought it was credible. I think I'll try this for myself this fall using both a tree peony stem and also itohs. Can't be all bad. At least it motivates me to clean out the fridge to make room for my experiment.
