Results are in!! We incubated half of a clutch of snake eggs inside our bullsnake's enclosure, and the other half in an incubator, to see which method hatched more/bigger babies. The results are surprising!

I super appreciate how much you guys try to let the snakes hatch naturally with a little intervention as possible! I've tried watching other channels similar to yours but hated how they were pulling snakes out of their eggs as soon as they pipped/were cut open.

Yeah. And these are pets so a bit of help is expected. Cause there's a major difference between a baby that died because of a bad egg tooth and literally drowned in its own egg, and a baby dying because of say that major spine kink in one of the last few clutches...

@@Tell-Your-Dog-I-Said-Hi Brian doesn't do that anymore from what I've seen. We can't hold things against people when they've made the effort to change bad habits/practices. If you watch his more recent egg cutting videos, he doesn't pull them from the egg even if he has to untangle an umbilical cord. People make mistakes, but if they learn from them and change how they're doing things it's a lesson learned and it should be acknowledged as such rather than thrown up constantly even though they're no longer doing that negative thing.

I must add. For the weighing, you probably need to weigh them the same amount of days after they hatch. Cause the lot that hatched first might have lost some weight in general cause they are older and havnt fed yet. And vis versa.
@snowpuppies1

I did think that would likely be more accurate.

True, but also a scale that only weighs to the nearest gram is not going to give a ton of accuracy for this. I'm surprised they haven't gotten a scale with more accuracy. Especially when they weigh hognoses, you will see a clear size difference and they will both come out as 3 grams, and one is probably 2.5 and the other 3.4.

I like how gentle you guys are with the animals, all the time, no matter what. All the other bigger "tougher" KZfaqrs, I feel like they just be yanking snakes and other animals around, either out of the cage, out of the box, out of the egg, whatever whatever. I'm always thinking "hey hey calm down now" or "whoa no need to whip the poor guy around" you are always very understanding of the animals behavior in a way that's very sweet but also very safe

The weight difference can result in the ones hatching first had a week of absorbing their yolk with no food to compensate for the energy spent on moving around and living in general. And the freshly hatched babys are still full of yolk. Similar to human babys drop up to 10% of their birth weight during the first days until Moms Milk is fully there. To compare the babys better in a future experiment, you should weigh them the day they hatch and compare to the second half when they hatch later. Sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes. English is not my native language

I just commented about this too, I wish I'd seen your comment first 😂 That would be an interesting experiment, to see if it's typical for baby snakes to lose weight during that small window of time, and how much weight is typical to lose.
@arynphillips5888
@arynphillips5888 Жыл бұрын
Yes! I commented, too. Though I think they would need a more accurate scale to see that % change, since theirs rounds to the nearest gram. 10% of a 6 gram snake might not change the reading!

Yeah... and the small sample size doesn't help either. The bigger clutch had both the smallest baby (20g) and the largest baby (26g) which might have skewed things a little. I'd love to see this done with a larger clutch and with weights taken at the same age!

So if the parents are 2 different strains of axanthic, what does that mean for the babies genetics-wise? Does it mean that they have the genes for both and present for neither? Would they in turn be able to breed with a partner of either strain and have axanthic babies? The little honker is absolutely adorable

Technically the weight experiment wasn't perfect, considering one tub of babies were older than the others (even if it was only a couple days). I think weighing them all the day after all have hatched, and then weighing the others the day after they hatch as well. It would make it a little more accurate 😊

On average the incubator hatchlings were heavier but the one small one weighing 20g ruined it for them. The biggest was in the incubator. So I would say that one was too small a sample size to make judgements on. 😊 But it’s interesting to see these results.
@lidiaf9598
@lidiaf9598 Жыл бұрын
The incubator babies were lighter. If we do not include the outlier, the incubator babies sum up 23/24/26=73g while the enclosure babies sum 25/24/25=74g. Even without the 20g baby the incubator babies had an average lighter weight, and their weight was more inconsistent, while the enclosure babies had more stable weight

That was very interesting to learn there's two strains of axanthic with bullsnakes, I wonder what the difference is with them and why they're incompatible. I almost wondered if the more vibrant patternless was a hypo patternless or something, probably not though (I've only seen albino patternless and now standard patternless). Probably just a pretty patternless as there's always variation in morphs :).

My hope is that you guys were able to hatch some baby Womas!! Having just got one a few months ago I would LOVE to see a details facts video about them. Mine does this huffy little puff sometimes and I would like to know if that’s a normal thing for here or if I should be concerned.. but she’s been acting normal otherwise and she only does that little huff some times.. 🤗🤗

Do you think you’d ever try to breed cali kings? Or are they boring lol, cause I have one and I don’t see too much content on them. Honestly I don’t even know if mine is a cali king cause he doesn’t look like one so I was curious on your takes of the species or something like that! Love the vids and those baby’s are so stinking cute!

it's almost 1:30am here, I really should sleep now and I was just looking for something to fall asleep to. No better way to end my day than watching new baby noodles

This was really cool, but shouldn’t you have weighed the higher temp group like a day after they hatched so they were weighed at the same age as the lower temp?

I'm excited to find out if the green tree pythons produced any babies, since there was breeding activity in the zoo! I'm also curious to see who mama gets paired with next year, since MSG *does* throw patternless with her, but is incompatible on the axanthic line. Do you have a male who is/het for Miami axanthic?

Emily, I have a couple questions, is their a type of poisonous garter snake? how is doug? and how is Cheyenne and rex? Thanks For The Amazing Videos!
@snakewithapen5489
@snakewithapen5489 Жыл бұрын
There are no venomous garter snakes (well there are, but their venom is so weak and specialized for small prey it only causes mild irritation in people, so no dangerous ones) but some garter snakes are poisonous! They eat frogs and insects that may contain toxins, and those toxins get concentrated in their livers, which can poison you if you eat them.

I've also heard that babies incubated at a lower temperature generally grow up to have less health issues, so perhaps this practice is worth continuing.
@bruhmingo

Strange how you didn’t want to use the new incubator because you didn’t know what the outcome would be, but you decided to “experiment” with a far less predictable method.
@raphaelwilliams1820
@raphaelwilliams1820 Жыл бұрын
Oh, they didn’t even have the new incubator done when this clutch was laid because they put it off for weeks. They only actually put it together after they completely ran out of room and were forced to do this “experiment”. Then framed it as if whether their babies live is a fun game.

At the time 4:42 in the video you thought that the egg with the symbol 69 is Pisces but it is cancer 😊 and I know this because I am a cancer but anyways I always love your videos! I used to be terrified of snakes but ever since I started watching your videos about 2 years ago I have started to like them more and more and it even made me save a snake that went into the road with cars so I went out in the road and saved it!
