I've had a few customers express a desire for louder flute pipes that could play along with violins without getting drowned out - especially at unison pitch.
Many companies building orchestrions back in the heyday would pair flutes speaking at 4' pitch (an octave higher) with their violins since pipes speaking at the higher pitch could more easily be heard over the violins when they played together.
I've been searching for a louder open flute that could play at 8' pitch (unison) with violins or even trumpets and not be drowned out. I recently obtained a copy of Doyle Lane's Wurlitzer band organ pipe scales and decided that the wooden piccolos used in the Wurlitzer 165 band organ would be a good starting point for strong flutes. I took the piccolo scale and extended it down into the middle C range. I also increased the scaling and made the pipes fatter as compared to their length to get a fuller sound. The cap. windway, and tuning slide are built like a violin pipe but as you can see there are no freins.
In the first part of the video the flutes play alone then in the second half they play along with violin pipes.
