My 80m EFHW with a coil at 2m, it is resonate 3.560, 15m high horizontal across my yard. I think your antenna is too short. When I first tested 40m was in 6.8 mhz and 13.6 mhz for 20m. I just cut it shorter until I was happy with 40/20m and ended up 1.5 t 1 on 15m and no good on 10m more in 27.9 etc. I made a 1 T 1 balun and put it at my transceiver end on my feed line maybe to choke common mode on the coax or not !! not sure if it helps or not. Its not necessary for me to tune it across the bands but I just nip it up with the tuner in my ic7400 anyhow. regards vk5cz ..

I want to move the choke on the transceiver side as well. The hight of the antenna is something I can't change for now. But I am planing on making it some sort of I verted V to have the middle a bit higher. Mine is the same.. as I do towards 10m the SWR is not as great... but I can still manage that with the tuner. I think with a bit more experimentation I can get it as I want it to be )) I still have to work a bit more on the compensation coil and the value of the 64.1 transformer. I will try to get the best I can and leave it as it is. But I know I tried haha. If not I will always ask myself if I could get it better haha. Thank you for sharing the info. It helps a lot. 73, YO6DXE.

Dear OM, that is very good work and I also like your garden and view. One thought that you may want to look into: There is a large discussion about if you need a counterpoise for an EFHW. I think, it needs one. It is good practise to have a little counterpoise (lambda * 0.05) at the ground from the coax connector of your transformer. Alternativly you can use the shield of the coax between the transformer and the choke. That means you have to consider the lengthe between choke and transformer to be 0.05 lambda of the lowest planned frequency (4 m @ 80 m). EZNEC modelling supports the effect of the counterpoise. Continue the good work and 73 de DD1TA

Good morning and thank you so much. Ohh yes you are right. Initially I wanted to use the coax version but I noticed that placing the rf choke at that distance is was also changing the proprieties of the antenna... not sure why was that... but now I do use a counterpoise and the choke is on the transceiver side. Hello!, Nice video, compliments. i did a lot of experiment on my inv L 8010 with vertical size abt 10m and the rest in horizontal. Two observations about counterpoise and compensation coil: 1 Conuterpoise is too short, generally minimum lenght is 5% of lower band, in this case 4m. I tested this solution and it was good but in my case the best solution is with 3 or more radials 4m long. RF choke is no more necessary because corrents flow thru the counterpoises (radials). 2) compensation coil: initially I built a compensation coil similar to yours, but after studies and experiments the better results was with 7 coils on 32 mm pipe.

Hello, Ciprian I use 2 common mode chokes for this antenna, first one .05 lamda down from feedpoint which is calculated for the lowest band of operation. Calculations are 0.05×80M band = 4M. I wind 8 turns of the feedline around a 240.43 toroid down from feedpoint and another one before entering the shack. This eliminates rf on feedline. Hope this helps and keep up the good work. 73 de Aiden EI8HJB.

No no Darrin... I think you have in mind the 110uH inductor for the shortened version of the antenna. This one is not short... is half wave on 80m... so 40m of wire. The coil I use in the video is a compensation coil and has about 0.5uH. Do not confuse it with the 110uH coil. That one yes it goes nearly the end of the antenna... but in my case the compensation coil has to be 2m away from the impedance transformer. 73, YO6DXE.

I was looking for a frequency of 3.8 MHZ and club net of 3.9 mhz. A 49:1 transformer with a 122.5' wire did the job. I was looking for that range, but it can be longer or shorter for desired range, with no tuner. If you align for 3.5 Mhz, all other bands fit. When tweaking, some bands become less resonant.

@@dxexplorer 80 for me was, 3.780 1:1, 3.8 = 1:1 and further 3.9 = 1:6. Now, 7.275 was 1:5, 7.295 was 1:4, 14.225 2:4, 18.110 was 2;5, 21.275 was 1:6, 24.930 was 1:7, 28.300 was 2:4, so not too bad so the internal tuner can do the best.

Try without the ferrite choke? I use 5-7m counterpoise on my EFHW, no noticeable stray signal in my shack. Or use 'ugly balun' method, at least 5m from the 49:1 unun.
@dxexplorer
@dxexplorer Жыл бұрын
I will sure try the counterpoise as well. A few more tests to make until I will find the best configuration for the antenna I guess ))). The reason why I did wanted to use the ferrite choke is also because it seems that it takes away some ugly electrical noises I used to get in the antenna from neighbors. What I want to try now is to have a counterpoise at the antenna... and use a ferrite choke but in the shack right next to the transceiver. Maybe it will work ? ))

@@dxexplorer using a choke too close to the 49:1 unun is like not letting the antenna stands on its 'two feet'. Yes EFHW is not a dipole, we are feeding it at the ends, but give it at least something to counterbalance. Yes, perhaps it is better to install a choke right before the coax enters your shack.

Makes sense yes. Thank you for this.. Chip, you need more turns on your choke. Use a bigger toroid 240. You should get 12 turns on with rg58. Less turns it becomes part of the antenna. Get that choke close to your radio. I've never seen any noticeable difference on 10m using a capacitor. You won't get much better on 80m because it's to low to the ground. The trick with the transformer is to stuff it with the largest wire you can fit on reduce the inductive reactance but by the same token you introduce capacity, maybe this is why I don't bother with a capacitor. I've never seen any improvement or regression with a counterpoise, as long as you have 5m or so of coax. Always test at the transformer or you will drive yourself crazy. Get it good at the antenna then you know all other issues are in the feeder, some of which you can't do anything about. There will always have to be some compromise in this antenna, by its very nature it can't be a one trick pony and do everything perfect. But it's good enough. And if you have ever had the pleasure of trying to tune up a fan dipole on 4 bands it will be good enough for us too 🤣

I need to work a bit more on the compensation coil and then adjust the length of the wire again. Final touch as they say ))). This time I will also use a 4.2m counterpoise to avoid any naughty RF... besides the RF Choke that I now have inside the house next to the transceiver. But on RX... it seems a lot better than the shortened version I had before.

Hello: One thing I noticed, and maybe you should research, is that I notice you put your input coming RF at the very end of the three turns and the ground at the 3 turn point. My transformers are exactly opposite. the ground is at the end and the 50 ohm input goes to the point of the third turn. I'm not really sure if it would really make any difference or not as the turns primary would be exactly the same? If you run 80 meters I would put the choke at about 13 feet from the transformer. On mine here at the house I had no choice but for it to be close to the antenna so I added a ground wire/counterpoise because that was all I could do. I tried a compensation coil on mine and it didn't work and I think that it was too close to the house and that is why I think mine has some problems; the vertical part of the wire is too close to my house for about 10 feet or so on the vertical rise. I could probably do a major re-do and get it further away from the house. If you do use a capacitor you probably should get a door knob capacitor or at least a good TDK from Mouser or DigiKey. 3KV I may use one on my portable which is what I am building right now. I used a cheep capacitor on my antenna and when I hit it with 500 Watts it shorted it out.

I'm on a 435 square meter tiny block. I started with a trapped version of EFHW like yours to get on 80m but any antenna with a trap to get on lower frequencies results in lower bandwidths on that lower band. So I went to a 1/2 wave at 80m NO TRAP (only 40m long and less as I use an inverted vee configuration to fit it into my postage sized piece of land!). It works much better. I can get it to resonate (reasonable SWR) for 40m and 80m...as for other bands I gotta tweak it with my ATU but on HF losses are not so bad. this may help The closer your antenna is to the ground, relative to the wavelength, the more the antenna is “loaded” so the required length of the wire to achieve resonance is shorter. As you go up in frequency the ground has less effect assuming the same height However…the extra wire for the lower bands, affects the resonance on the higher bands lowering the resonance and making the antenna appear longer. My solution for you. Build one or more water proof match boxes that live at the base of the antenna and are optimised for a couple of bands. Make them out of fixed capacitors and coils. Swap them out as you need. Have one for say 80 & 40 but it may be a bit ordinary on 20m, that’s ok, maybe have a tap on the coil to make 20m work and another tap for 80m CW Make a second that does 20, 15 and 10 really well but you may find it ordinary on 40 and unusable on 80 As for the WARC bands, you could tune them too with some more match circuitry. Doesn’t need to be adjustable as once you know the values you need, it should be fine, unless the box fills with water. I use banana plugs into binding posts to connect my antennas to my match boxes. BNC for the coax. Makes it simple to swap out. Plastic bag over the unit keeps it all waterproof Just an idea.

Thank you Chris. Is not a bad idea. I do have a problem as the way I have to install the antenna here ( due to the position of the house etc ), the only way I can do it is from the attic. So the bad part is that every time I would want to change bands I must go up in the attic. I already had enough of that lately after experimenting with this one making adjustments hahaha. I am feeling old now 😅. Your solution though is good as is more "personalized" for each band so I believe the efficiency would be better too. I did noted the detail about the length vs hight as I didn't know exactly how that works. So is good to finally understand the effect of the hight of the antenna. Thank you so much for this. 73, YO6DXE.

As for me, my time on the air, with a tiny tiny back yard, much smaller than George’s with room for verticals and mag loops, I’ve found that trying to cover more than an octave of spectrum, eg 3.5-7 or 14-28, isn’t always achievable as once you get over that, you’re running into compromises with either take off angle or lobes in the case of a vertical, or, in the case of a mag loop, significant drops in efficiency as you go below half your top frequency I’m going to take, what I have dubbed, the Back Yard Banger 20/40m vertical and see if we can recreate it at George’s home QTH. There is a video on his channel where we hook mine up on a tripod at his place, and make a few QSOs, drink wine and enjoy the hobby of ham radio Not a bad night on 20m with just 20W I don’t think we had 40m running on it.
