As a hydronics heating installer in PA I was ask to install 2 wood boilers this year. One was a Hyprotherm regular wood stove which clearly but confusingly said "Coal only" now I understand why. The second one was a gasification unit made by an Amish firm in Lancaster PA. The gasification unit was tied into a large shop radiant floor system and a home with convection heat. The "Coal" unit was tied into a hydrocoil on a ducted system and a indirect water heater. Both of these jobs led me to look deeper into these units. It appears the two best units available are the Heatmaster and the Polar. I use a quadrafire wood stove in my home for wood burning and a condensing lp boiler for the radiant floors. With a wood boiler I will be able to get the freedom of wood burning and still use my radiant floors. The idea of using a Lambda sensor for O2 is interesting as long as it is not troublesome and the unit can still be used if it fails. The use of ferritic 409 ss has proven itself in many condensing boilers and has me definitely leaning towards the Heatmaker. You are fortunate to have an installer that is well versed in hydronics as entering into this wood burning you find yourself many times in the middle of Newtonian physics and the Mother earth news lol Your man is correct about the air to water heat pumps, I was just in Atlanta for the ARH Expo and there are at least 7 manufacturers that have these units. They are monoblocked so they require no charging of refrigerant, you just set them and pipe them in with PEX. Their biggest problem is the max temp of 120 and that is pushing it. Again, an excellent video Tony, you obviously do a lot of research before you purchase equipment. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos.

Nice looking units there Tony. This industry is always innovating. I do have some questions/concerns… 1) How do you clean ash out of bottom of turbulators and back of secondary chamber? With multi passage refractory I see they took a page out of Woodgun boilers. 2) Stainless Steel for nozzle?? It’s hard for me to believe it holds up for a year or 2. 310 SS might last but I’d be skeptical. I looked into making a nozzle out of Inconel but never materialized. 3) 2 separate fresh air intake servos are a much better design. I always tell folks it’s like a cutting torch. Get pressures right at regulator (primary air) then balance the cutting flame with oxy/acety needle valves (secondary air). 3) I would like to see how these boilers would perform if they were charging a storage tank…just like the Europeans do. They are built damn near identical now. Having a boiler burn full tilt burns cleaner and more efficient. Same principle as generators and plane engines. I think US mfgs could meet even lower emission stds by doing this.
@karlschwingel9715
@karlschwingel9715 Жыл бұрын
1: there are clean out tools, and they are designed to reach around and thru to grab ashes and pull them out. 2: it holds up. I have 2 seasons on mine and it is still sharp from the laser cutter. there is always a little air coming thru the bottom damper when the stove is running to keep it cool. I pulled it out this summer, and it's not even warped. they got that one just right!. 3: Yes. 4: being able to throttle heat production and having a 200 gallon buffer in the 7000 goes a long way toward making that stove not need storage. I used to install euro boilers (still do sometimes) that needed lots of storage, and indoor space. the G-series was the product that got me away from that mentality.

@@karlschwingel9715 thanks for replying. Good to hear about the nozzle. One major hurdle I see in these stand alone boilers be it gasser or non is the shoulder seasons and summer. Having a boiler with good insulated water storage is unaffected by extended warm weather. No worries about wood smoldering or relighting. I agree, storage takes up a lot of valuable space and even more so retrofitting into existing bldgs. If a person has the space or is building new I’d plan room for Garn boiler hands down. Im still curious to see how these boilers perform charging storage.

Interesting that he shuts his unit down during the day. Is it oversized for what he is heating? I thought most people let them go once you light them for the season to prevent or decrease the thermal cycles which can be bad for stoves (excessive heating and cooling repeatedly). Not saying he is wrong by any means. Doesn't seem to be that cold there yet so maybe it is just a little early to be running it? Thanks for the look. I've always wanted a boiler. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I have a wood stove and a pellet stove..
@karlschwingel9715
@karlschwingel9715 Жыл бұрын
It is oversized for this time of year and weather. I mostly run it this early so customers can come see it run, and to keep the semi tropical greenhouse happy in the chilly nights. But when it gets cold, It works hard, heating 3000sf house, 400 sf greenhouse, and 2000 sf of poorly insulated barn/shop.
