The video was not very explicit about the steps of prevention, but did cover what to do. The video from 4:31-4:56 describes wearing full length pants, tucked into boots, wearing gaiters, and treating all of your clothing and boots with permethrin. Permethrin is sprayed onto clothing (not skin) and allowed to dry. This is also used on camping ground cloths, backpacks, tents, bivvys, etc. It is a chemical that is based on pyrethrins that are in the marigold family, and kills bugs. You may need to apply it once a month (or more often) if your clothing gets washed or soaked with water. Apply DEET to your skin to ward off all kinds of insects. DEET is an irritant to bugs and keeps them from landing on you, whereas permethrin doesn't irritate them, it kills them when they crawl onto treated clothing. Be careful with permethrin. Don't breathe it in, or apply to your skin as it does have toxicity to humans, but won't harm you once it is dry (unless you chew on your clothing for some reason). It is toxic to cats while wet. The clothes should be off your body when sprayed, sprayed until damp (not drenched), and allowed to dry completely before using the clothes.

I fear ticks before I fear death. Obviously tick borne illnesses are a huge factor but everything about ticks and the way they look and move their body scares me to the core. I’m TERRIFIED of ticks to the point I don’t want to walk under trees or go deep into nature. I want to start hiking and biking the safest way I possibly can

I'm worried not enough people know about Phermethrin. It 100% solves the problem of lyme disease contraction and yet awareness of the chemical for this purpose seems very low to me. This spring/summer thousands more will contract the disease ( and possibly the life-destroying variant that is chronic ) and it could all be prevented if people just knew to buy a $12 bottle of this chemical and treated their clothes before going out this season...

Excellent video! Unfortunately, I got Lyme Disease in 2012. My reoccurring fever was so high and body aches so bad I ended up in hospital multiple days. I tested negative for Lyme Disease then, but tested positive two months later when antibodies could be measured. I was given antibiotics but it did not clear it up completely. I did not realize that for awhile though. By 2015 the continuing Lyme Disease affected my brain (caused brain lesions) and nervous system so bad the doctors thought at first I had MS. I was put on intravenous antibiotics this time for a couple months. The Lyme Disease is no longer active but the damage is permanent. Lyme Disease is no joke. Wear bug spray!

I am wearing treated gaiters in that portion of the video and was walking in the center of a well worn trail and never brushed against the grass. The angle of the camera makes it look like I'm in the grass. As I mentioned in the video, using the mentioned strategies and gear I never had even a crawling tick on me during 5 months on the AT. Also, there is a second video paired with this one showing things like proper tick removal and other prevention details.

Ticks can't bite through cloth or nylons. There are track pants made of light material suitable for summer wear. You have to weigh the risk of contracting a life-altering, life-threatening disease against being fully protected by dressing properly.

I visited our hunting club a couple of weeks ago and my wife pulled the tick off at 3AM. I took a chance and wore my hunting duds. I actually solved my tick problem with a set of Dickies overalls with or without Peritremin or however you spell it. Of course, it's best with...pants tucked into the boots. Unfortunately it wears like a spacesuit and it's *HOT* in the summer. I nearly had a dang heat stroke working on food plots last year. Noseeums are nearly as bad as ticks for me and we have those as well. I fear them both worse than snakes. So from now on spacesuit, Perithremin (whatever) and I'm going to try something new this year for the collars and sleeves called Picaridin. Beats absorbing all that DEET. The video here featuring the fellow walking around in his shorts in the woods did nothing to raise my estimate of the validity of the effort.

I got bit by a tick 10 days ago. It's a giant red mess now. I have done everything natural and am on doxyxyclomine. I would like some discussion on what I can do to completely stop this. That's what I'm trying to do before it gets bad and takes hold of me completely. I started having symptoms on day 2 and it's been hard just these few days. I started not feeling as bad yesterday. I been taking natural things and would like to know other natural ways to deal with this. Nat Anne Toth Flatt on Facebook. Or Explorr1 .
