I understand the points why getting out of alliances can be beneficial for us, mainly to signify that we can protect ourselves and our growing significance in the world. However, alliances also serve as a massive deterrent and balance of power. That’s why we can see Norway and Sweden eventually joining NATO when they realized that the value of neutrality versus having the “security” to be in NATO is diminishing. The thing is, we are not dealing with just another middle or regional power. We are dealing with China, which is projected to be the world’s number 1 economy and military power. Hence, despite us becoming a Trillion dollar economy and eventually joining the Top 10 biggest economy, the balance of power without the US alliance is skewed against us. Even if you argue that we can build our AFP to have a credible deterrence (which is far off in the future), it won’t be enough. Remember, if the worst case scenario happens and war breaks out, the PH will be the battle ground and it is relatively easy to pinpoint and destroy our key military assets from mainland China (with their ballistic missiles). The key reason that China will unlikely do that is because of the US guarantee of protecting the PH. In fact, I would argue that what the administration is doing right now (from a non partisan perspective) is better by building additional key partners and POTENTIAL alliances with Japan, Australia, and maybe even India. With this, we are essentially become diversified and serves as a testament that we are NOT overtly reliant to the US. One of the benefits of having alliance besides maintaining the balance of power is also it allows us to efficiently use our national budget towards key economic activities. We can already see that with countries part of NATO, where their commitment is only 2% of their GDP, which most member countries doesn’t even meet. Without NATO, these countries, particularly those bordering and close to Russia will be spending so much more with the hope of deterring a foreign invasion and Russia is not even close to China in terms of military capability, China has a far modernized military with equipments rivaling US in terms of technology and numbers.
