I totally get why record sales companies would avoid using the word "mint." I'm a car valeter (detailer for our US cousins) and there's one term I ALWAYS avoid when talking to a client. The term is: "showroom condition" which denotes "brand new" or "flawless." As a valeter, I can't ever get a USED vehicle back to "showroom condition" so the term I use is "forecourt condition" (by which, I mean "as good as your car's gonna get!") I'm also a record collector, and have been since 1973. I take obsessive care of my thousands of records, but I'm a former mobile dj, and I know, that amongst the thousands, I only have ONE "MINT" record. Its Oasis' "D'u Know What I Mean" which is still in its cellowrap. Unopened, unplayed... perfect.

Yeah and I come from the dj community of the 80’s through 2003 and most djs trashed their records from constant playing gigs and practicing how to Mix at home. But I never dj’d and just collected the records and the ones I still have look brand new still. So I’m back after 20 years and trying to learn the new way of collecting records and how to grade them bc in the last few weeks I already bought about 50 12” and everyone puts VG+ or higher. But you get a range of different condition and trying to understand the new grading standard. Back in the days, when you sold or bought records from used record stores, it would be in NM condition or they wouldn’t take. That’s what I hoping to find in this vintage record collecting that’s going on here. They sold like used record store have 2 grade, like new and used with cosmetic wear. This way you know what your getting, like from a used record store .

Brand new video, so I'll share a word on Jarrett's impact on my record craze. Thanks to you, Jarrett, I've recently got into spinning that vinyl! I started off easy, playing my dad's collection of over 100 records on his old Fonica turntable (very popular brand back in 80's Poland). Then, I decided to buy my first own player, so I went with an LP60X, and got myself some deadmau5 records off Discogs. Now, my humble collection has 9 records, but it is going to be increasing every now and then. Thanks again, Jarrett!

7:58 In fact, a sealed record could be worse because the shrink-wrap can, well, shrink and squeeze the record and warp it. VWestlife showed this a couple of weeks ago in the video "Don't keep your vinyl records sealed!" 😕

I don't like that records can be graded "Good" and still have surface noise and/or scratches that affect the playing. I think a grade of Mild should be in-between Good and Poor. Your video cleared up an experience I had using Discogs and I appreciate the breakdown, thank you!
@TheAboriginal1
@TheAboriginal1 Жыл бұрын
There is a "Fair" grading between Good and Poor which generally indicates the record will play but can stick or skip in spots. If a record plays through without stopping then the lowest you should grade it is "Good" according to Goldmine. Dumb, but that's the system that everyone signed up for. Discogs even gives you a warning when you buy a "Good" record. I think that's proof the system makes no sense but whatever.

Sometimes you have to take a chance on buying vinyl because I’ve brought a record with no visible marks and plays awful and had some with scuffs and minor scratches that played very well. So I find grading quite difficult but if it’s a good price I normally take a chance and buy it.

Hi Jarrett. When i want to buy a record, I first look on Ebay to see if it is available. I usually look for "very good plus" or higher. When i receive the record, i check the surface for any visible marks. The next step is to thoroughly clean the record using a power cleaner (mold remover), record cleaning fluid, and a vacuum record dryer. Next i use a record preservative to harden the groove wall for about 200 plays. Then i play the record to check for any excessive surface noise. If there is, i repeat the cleaning process.

I only have one album which is really good a double album called vintage Duane eddy by the great guitar player Dwayne Eddie released on vinyl. The record is in very good condition although one edge of the record jacket is frayed on the edges which I don’t like that’s the only minor complaint and I think not I love buying records that are in mint condition which is really good that’s what I go for when I shop for vinyl or even CDs or even cassettes even. thank you Jared for sharing this this really helps me out a lot I love buying vinyl and I always well even the vinyl box sets.

I'd also like to mention the case where it is possibly a rare pressing and you'd never know until it's opened, most people wouldn't take the chance spending the extra money when it's possibly just a normal press. So most of the time vinyls "in shrink but opened" fetch a lot more than "unopened" ones.

There's also with older records from the 50's 60's that have the label printed with a large circle and a small circle. I find that the pressing with the small circle are a better quality. Furthermore on MGM Stereo LP's some pressings have a 45/45 on the right side of the label. That stopped in late 1963..i've never seen any other label that did this.

I would be very weary and careful when buying a sealed record. Very often, the seal will shrink over time beyond the initial seal dimensions and cause pressure to be applied to the record inside.. and causing it to warp. It's very common. I stick to VG to VG+ records for my own collection.

I do have an original release cracked record The Who Live AT Leeds (with documents) it has a 1/2 inch fracture as well as a ugly chipped gap at the edge of the disc but with careful needle placement I can still get good sound with slight popping from that crack that the needle rides over, but the rest of the record is in otherwise good to very good condition,. similar to my otherwise near mint 1970 pressing of Elton John self titled with the first 10 seconds of the opening hit song Holy Moses being obliterated by a vintage cigarette burn while cueing up the needle back in the day.

Always wondered if a self cleaned but brand new record is still Mint. But whatever, I think sometimes it's hard to grade a record. I recently bought a 1988 original pressing of Metallica's "...And Justice For All" and after cleaning it played so damn good, it played better than some new records I have in my collection. But the viniyl had some light scratches and obvious signs of wear, despite of playing great and clear. The sleeve was in my opinion a Very Good+ (after cleaning it).

Nah definitely not Mint if you're putting it through a clean cycle. You can get away with different grades for different music though. AC/DC NM, VG+, and VG all sound the same. Very different when applying that to a piano recital though where the passages are extremely quiet.

My question is nm or nm- copies you can’t play them or the grade goes down? If so, how would you know if something is nm or nm- if you don’t play it and check if they play right? If collectors have NM or NM-, they can’t play it or the grade goes down? Sounds too strict and reminds me of collecting comic books in the70’s when I was a kid and I couldn’t even open to read my mint comics bc I was afraid to damage them. Anyway, your video was helpful. Oh and can you switch covers on original pressing or is that a no no?! Bc of the pressing date or that doesn’t matter bc it’s more about the record that’s indicated by the vinyl? I buy many dance 12”s and most came with generic label logos or a generic black cover and switching the cover to make a more perfect copy doesn’t seem to matter. In fact, when I buy them recently, I don’t try to check any code or anything and assumed that’s the original cover it originally came with, Thanks for helping!

A good record dealer's return policy is worth more than a rating category in my opinion. I like to know that the expected variations in quality within a grade will be in my favor if it comes time to return something. I play everything I buy, and I have a FLAC for pretty much anything I'm interested in already. Online, I have no problem if a dealer wants to make their money on shipping, because I'm not paying extra for inflated grades. I'd rather buy from a ruthlessly honest grader than someone who says everything is VG+ or near mint. Near mint is for when I NEVER want to buy another copy, and VG+ is for when I'm tired of looking. Everything else, I'm paying for the mystery of wondering what path it took over the decades to get to my store.

Song of the day is always something mainstream and well known. However going to suggest this as song of the day. Helluri by Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble.

Although I try to buy only brand-new (mint) LPs, sometimes a title I want isn't produced anymore, so I have to find it used. I will only buy (near mint) LPs, since that description - according to Goldmine - isn't really open to interpretation: The vinyl must be flawless. I've bought several (near mint) LPs from eBay, and I've not been disappointed. eBay is a great source because the sellers are fastidious about their reputation "score" and usually won't risk a bad review. The LPs I've bought look brand-new, and some can be a real bargain.

What about a record listed as nm but has skips and crackles. So weary from sellers over stating condition.

I've totally given up with Discogs after receiving numerous records graded Near Mint to find they would barely pass as Good condition. Crackling records and creased, worn or dog-eared covers do not rate as Near Mint. Even supposed Mint copies I have found to be Used!

From my experience I've seen the grading vg++ quite often. I am not an audiophile by any means. And I never want to be. It sounds stressful and expensive. That being said I try to only buy the vg++ or better but I have found that most of the time vg+ is good enough for me. Due to the differences in people's interpretation of condition I have received some Vg+ records that were really not good. I try to stay away from them if possible. Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy them.

Yup most sellers just go by looks without actually listening. Just bought a VG+ last week and even after Record Doctor it sticks on 2!! separate tracks. According to Goldmine that should be Fair or even Poor.

I have purchased several hundred LPs and CDs through Discogs. I find that 99% of the sellers grade the LPs quite well. I tend to target ones graded as VG+ or NM. I do this as a buffer because I don't have the opportunity to see the LP before purchase.

"EX" is my favorite grading... like nearly NM. .oh, and i always prefer buying EX or NM copies than Sealed ones, due to the warp issue or even pressing flaws, not check-able before.

EX is technically not in the Goldmine scale but I know what you mean. There's a big different between VG+ and NM and it should be EX or I've seen VG++ also but neither of those are technically a real grading.

@@TheAboriginal1 yeah, you are right. But i use EX for many years. It just gives a better info, that goldmine dont have in that grading field (would just make sense, if they would add it)... and i dont care about a "real" grading, as long as people know what to expext when a wax was graded,.. and to fine tune that grading.🙂✌️

@@indyvinylz agreed! The Goldmine scale is very antiquated. I wish it would get a 21st century update
