This very first time I have ever truly understood the size of these Russian SAMs. Pictures and videos on television do these machines no justice. One of the best educational DCS videos I have seen to date. Thank you, sir.

Nope, you do not. Sadly even during the first some minutes I stopped count the inaccurate statements of the video. Even the names and designations are not correct in many times. Foe ex. the S-75 Desna was a very, very, very short lived thing. The S-75V and later the S-75M was the definitive and long lasting variant. The S-75s could guide three missiles on a single target and not one. I rather recommend this series about the same topic. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mN-VZLdh3ZzQoKM.html

He could probably cover everything they have in the same Video length. Soviet Union/Russia has by far the most multiple layer AA system. It was always assumed the Soviet Airforce would be out numbered and that philosophy has continued to apply. It also serves to protect Russian facilities and cities from the same kind of bombing campaign you see in Middle East all the time.

This is fascinating. Where you've come in the 2 years I've been watching you is remarkable...in both your in-game ability and your ability to tell a story (and edit until your eyes bleed). I've never played DCS or Arma for that matter but I still watch everything you put out because if I'm not learning something I'm laughing my ass off. This video was inaccurate even just regarding the names and types of such basic thing how many missiles channels the SA-2 family had... I could not watch~ more than 10 min and some here and there checking because it is so inaccurate.

what sams? NATO's SAM systems kinda suck mostly. Their doctrine has mostly been fighter air to air. and technically alot of these are now part of NATO's sam network.

the tunguska actually has a track radar (the round thing at the front) which can augment the SACLOS although it is more used for automated gun fire. also SACLOS is aim the sight at the enemy MCLOS a joystick

Hey ! Thanks again for covering our mod. FYI, the S and U TELs on the S-300PS use the same missile, and have the same range. The only difference between both is that one is a "smart" TEL with the needed electronics while the other is a '"dumb" TEL without said eletronics. IRL, a smart TEL is used to control a dumb one, and the dumb one can't fire its missiles alone. This can be seen on the models: the smart TEL have a compartiment behind the driving position while the dumb one just has a spare wheel. In DCS, both TELs work identically.

This was VERY comprehensive! Side-by-side comparison was extremely understandable. Using the cows for a size reference and driving around in the little GAZ was great. I could almost smell the dry grass, diesel and rocket exhaust! ADA. If it flys it dies!

Yep, a clever radar operator went against doctrine and pinged an extra time at what the system considered a flock of birds, but this time it got caught with its bomb doors open, presenting a larger radar cross section. This is a failure of flight planning as well, due to the F117s all being flown down the same corridor. Good case study

@@marcusborderlands6177 Out of the rest of the flight? No, they made it through. The F117 was never "invisible" to radar, but rather "low observable" and used in combination with other electronic warfare and jamming planes (which curiously, they gave the go ahead on this mission without them)

I found that pure notching doesn't always work. It's also a good idea to make the missiles bleed some speed by turning around midway through their flight and make them lead you the other direction while you maintain a high speed. Then at the last moment you do a high G turn and they just can't keep up. This doesn't work for SA-15s and similar short range missiles of course.

Excuse me, one additional remark. Just try to imagine the situation back then: the Soviet Union was much poorer than the US and had a clear lag in terms of electronics. By the time the US and UK used integrated circuits in their missiles, the USSR still had to work with vacuum tubes. This was not because soviet engineers were not good enough. In terms of knowledge there was no difference, but the soviet industry could not produce high-tech with consistent quality and in the required quantity. Some production batches of the same piece of equipment were good, others were disaster. So the soviet engineers had to achieve the same efficiency than their NATO colleagues, but using a one generation earlier electronics. And they almost did it. That is why these engineers behind these systems deserve the respect of our generation.

a little different, the backlog in electronics in the USSR was 5 years, this is actually not much. The fact is that the USSR was waiting for the US attack, which means it must withstand the first strike of an atomic weapon. At that moment, neither the USSR nor the United States had solid-state electronics that could withstand the electromagnetic pulse of a nuclear explosion. But this impulse was well withstood by lamp equipment, so the army adhered to lamp circuits to the last. I will shock you, but I personally saw equipment on ships, including logic circuits made on pneumatics. These circuits did not respond to nuclear explosions at all.

@@championknife Thx, but you did not shock me. I am aware of the resilience of such old technologies to EMP. But as for the lag in electronics, I believe that the capabilities of the industry in the USSR was lagged by 10-15 years to produce such equipment, while the scientific knowledge level was very comparable.

While I have taken a cursory look at the game, I have never played DCS. The detail is pretty amazing and the mechanics seem to be fairly solid.

The video should be redone regardless of "contemporary targets" or not. The video is sadly filled with lots of inaccurate statements. I'm currently creating a list jus about the most serious ones... If you are really interested in SAMs I recommend the SAM series on Militavia channel. It was started on Binkov's Battleground. @@mikegarwood8680 Only USAF SAM was Bomarc. The fact that the USAF couldn't use their own SAM's to defend their own Airfields in Europe during the Cold War resulted the USAF buying Rapier and getting the RAF and Turkish to operate it for them in bases in the UK and Turkey.

The main thing the mast radar gives you is a wider radar horizon. Same reason the Type 45 went for a pair of rotating faces atop the mast, as opposed to the much lower down 4 fixed faces of the Arleigh Burke's SPY-1.

Coming from an ArmA player's perspective, damn we are missing a lot of stuff in game... Also, this would make for a great Sunday Fun day. Reloading SAM's so they don't run out, just for added spice/misery.

From my many hours in ARMA 2, it seems like the Takistani Army will have a couple BTR-40s, a BMP-2, and approximately 43 SAMs positioned in a village of 30 houses.

As a kid in cadets, I got to experience the UK optical Rapier system at RAF Honnington. We got to play around with a simulated attack and had to optically track the enemy jet. It was great fun but really difficult! I got a 50% hit rate which is apparently good!

Love this video for its explanation between models. Obviously the caps and lims aren't going to be accurate because it's a game and based of unclassified info I'm sure, but still liked it. A NATO video would be awesome to pair this with!

JSYK, the guns on the Tunguska are 30mm, not 35mm. That aside this is one of the best, most fascinating, and most informative videos I've ever seen!

S-125 can fire multiple missiles at a time. At a single target only, however. Don't know why this is moddeled incorectly. But, it was standard practice for us to engage every target with two missiles in 1999. Was it called dual channel guidance, or guidance via two channels. Something like that, translations are rough, and so is my English.

Same for the S-75. 6 launchers per battery, up to 3 can be launched at a target at the same time, just a few seconds apart.

Basically my favorite video ever here. Russian air defense has become a love of mine. I read somewhere about the Russians having to concentrate on surface to air defense because there was no possible way to compete with American fighter jet technology due to costs mainly. The Russians are able to build large quantities of these air defense systems for much less money. Also, systems like the pantsir and other SPAAGs can double as anti-infantry/armor weapons. Nothing like 23mm cannons being fired at some poor souls. Unfortunately I have been able to see this done on many occasions with the whole mounting of 23mm cannons on beautiful Hiluxes in the middle east. Thanks for this video. I dont think as much info is out there about the chinese capabilities but hopefully in the future it will be readily available.

It's true that Russia's AA systems are unable to compete w/ American jet technology that's why there are multitudes of AA systems to compensate for it. An example would be the S400, in many videos it's always seen alone and vulnerable to the F-35. In reality, there are different AA systems present to support the S400.

I will exclude American stealth aircraft from the conversation because they can easily defeat and penetrate Russian airspace unseen, so I will consider 4th gen aircraft only; Many of America's 4th generation aircraft can be fitted to conduct electronic warfare and anti-radiation combat missions. What that means is there will be a swarm of American jets at the front of a formation all fitted with equipment to jam any kind of ground radar, and then behind them is the second swarm of jets fitted with missiles that will lock onto any source of radar coming from the ground. These are called HARM missiles, and America's harm missiles are capable of tracking and destroying surface to air targets even after their radar is deactivated. So the old tactic of fire and then turn your radar off is completely ineffective against American weapons.

@@PotatoeJoe69 no, stealth doesn't make a jet invisible... It just delays detection for as long as possible, Russian Radars will pick up on stealth aircraft and have done so multiple times already

@@ser43_OLDC they actually use 2 guns, the guns are double barreled but a single unit (i.e. Left barrel fires and the gas from left barrel loads right barrel which then fires and loads left barrel and then it goes on and on like that)
