Why didn't he just contain him, deny his left and push him into the other defender that was in front? Defending him seems pretty simple, in this case, if you don't try to steal the ball. Force him to make a difficult pass through traffic or pass it backward away from the goal. If he makes a pass through traffic - live with it.
